Here is the DD-WRT link to install the custom firmware on this router: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/D-Link_DIR-632

      Highly recommend installing DD-WRT.

With the stock firmware the wifi stops working constantly.

I have this router running DD-WRT, and it's great. I have created a different SSID and passcode for each of my kids, which lets me track who is using the most data.

Also means I can "turn off" the internet for one kid, if they use too much data.

        • Why is using a lot of data a problem for kids? I would be more interested in the contents they watch online than the size of data they consume.

        • @mily: I don't know about you but I hate lag spikes when gaming.

        • @mily:

Why is using a lot of data a problem for kids?

Not having an unlimited data plan, I have to limit their usage, or we'd be in "shaped" territory before the end of the month.

Better to punish the person causing the problem, than everyone in the family.

        • @Russ:
With Gargoyle firmware, you can allocate total data usage per IP or range, and for a specified period of time, as well as shaping or disconnection for those clients.

        • @chyawala:

          With Gargoyle firmware,

Sadly, Gargoyle requires OpenWRT, which is not yet stable on this router. According to the status page, it's still in Alpha.

I like Gargoyle and TomatoUSB too, but finding an inexpesive router with good specs AND Gargoyle/TomatoUSB compatibility seems an impossibility.

I can't find an easy way to do quotas on DD-WRT. There used to be a "Chillispot" option, but apparently that's been broken for a while now.

I believe quotas can be set on DD-WRT, using iptables, but that's a whole load of learning I've yet to do.

Word of warning.. I bought this router when it was $5 from MSY https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/132491

After installing DD-WRT and trying to use it as a range extender the router would crash and require a restart after a few short minutes. Might be due to the lack of on-board memory or because there is no 'range extender' mode and need to use it as an access point + in client bridge mode.

Though it does work fine as a normal router/access point.

I have been uaing this as a repeater for months now. Works 24x7 with no issue.
It was a pain to get it set up at first but works a treat now

  • WIred ports are only slow 10/100 Mbps. Would have probably got one if it were gigabit.

    • Still good value for money, if you bought a 8 port switch it would probably be 15 bucks.

  • Any voucher codes, not available for pick up at the stores in VIC

  • Was sort of hoping it's dual band, gigabit.

  • Got one. Thanks OP.

Nice price. I need an 8 port router but this doesn't appear to be gigabit :(I have no plans to use this with wifi.

Edit: Can anyone suggest a decent plug and play (don't want to play around too much) 8 port gigabit router? Don't need Wifi as I'll have a wifi router set up elsewhere on the Network.

Just buy a switch… super cheap, reliable and easier to install (literally plug and play)

      • How cheap are they? Cheaper than $19?

        • Yep..

    • I agree. Buy a normal router and add a switch. Not sure on your setup. But I have power-line adapters throughout my house with Netgear switches on each one

      • I thought of that but just figured an 8 port router is easier than a switch

          Not at all.
A router you'll need to configure to pass through DHCP requests to the modem/router.
Wheras for a switch, you literally plug the power supply into the wall, plug network cables in the switch and setup is complete.

  • Got ONE THANKS

  • Great router, I have two of these running DD-WRT set up as WAPs at home.
I got one for $11 at MSY and then another for $5 when came up again.

  • I also got this for $11 at MSY a while ago. DD-WRT worked well. The 10/100 ports also made me upgrade after a while. But got router nonetheless with custom firmware
