Just got the CamelCamelCamel notification.
This is the best price is US$ terms the i5 NUC has been yet. It is the taller-body version that accommodates regular size 2.5 drives (and msata if you want).
You need: 1.35v RAM/HDD/Wireless card and OS.

Is that using a 28 deg CC?
Yes that's a direct conversion, which 28 degrees gets you pretty close to that mark. I think the Amex free freight offer is still hanging around although you will probably lose 3% on conversion. I think the postage component was only $13, so most of the postage savings will probably be eaten up in currency conversions if you use an Amex.
Could even been cheaper $299 US = $340.78 AU. MasterCard Currency Conversion Tool.
you didnt include delivery
@asa79: No. If delivery is only $13 US then that's only another $15 AU.
I think your conversions are out.
$299US converts to $360 (as at 9/12) so $20 difference.
$13US converts to $15.66 (as at 9/12)
…thus with the $20 difference and the fact your conversion did not include postage, the difference is the $38 which was my original conversion of $378.
@kearnsy: What rate are you using? I'm using the ones in the link in my post above. The MasterCard Currency Conversion Tool. Still getting $340 today.
I use this;
http://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/
To get $340 the conversion must be occurring around $1AU to .88US. I believe the AU is around .83 ATM. It was last at .88 around a month ago.
@kearnsy:
Yeah use my link if you use a 28 Degrees Credit Card. It's the daily rate you'll be charged with no additional fees.
Ok so using your MasterCard website $299US converts to $362AU, not $340.78AU as you indicated. This was using the date as the 9/12.
Oh. I think the website had the date cached from a previous visit. I just assumed it update to the current date. Sorry for the confusion.
noob here so im waiting for the pros to confirm if this is a good deal before jumping the gun
Well the cheapest in AU stock ATM is around $449, so around $71 cheaper.
The AU$ is worth a bit less these days but it is the lowest historical price in US$ that this has been. If you want a NUC this particular model is an excellent all round choice. If you have Amex, you may be able to wangle free shipping.
1) I have AMEX. Do I just use it to get free shipping?
2) Are there discount codes with Amazon?
3) You said this is the "taller-body version", how bigger is it compared to the "normal" one?
4) i3 or i5? I saw on the amazon link the i3 is like US$20 cheaper.
5) GIYF
Google is your friend.
@King Tightarse: lol I know but i thought you the pro man :)
lucky you didnt do the LMGTFY lol
@sky blu:
Well if you are seriously asking whether its worth $20 more to get the i5 version over the i3, then it seems you have a bit of reading to do. Trust me, this is an excellent choice if you are sure you want a NUC but be aware that you have more to spend. You need a HDD, RAM, OS and a wireless card.
Do a search here on OzBargain and read up on similar deals, most of the info will be there in the threads also check out relevant threads on Whirlpool. In many cases it is cheaper to buy a similar specced laptop, once the full spend is costed. It just comes down to your exact needs.
To add to King Tightarse, if Vpro and remote administration is also important to you this feature is only found in the I5 model.
Yes you maybe able to save a dollar or two using Amex as opposed to 28 Degrees, what you save on shipping you pay nearly as much in currency conversion costs.
Got excited. And then saw AUDUSD is at 0.825 at the moment :(
I bought this from Deals Direct for $404 including delivery. It's amazing!
You need to add an mSATA SSD, SO-DIMM DDR3L 1.35v RAM, an OS and a wifi card if needed. I bought the Samsung Pro Evo 840 120GB mSATA SSD for $89. It's EOL so you may find it difficult to find. I also bought 2x4GB sticks of Crucial RAM for $98. Also get yourself a universal remote like the Logitech Harmony 650 if you're using it as an HTPC. I have Windows 8.1, XBMC and Steam installed. I'm a very happy man.
The form factor looks to be perfect for a HTPC, but to be complete (in my usage scenarios anyway), it would need a Blu-ray drive and TV tuners.
BD drive -> looks like you'd need an external USB drive.
TV tuner -> I suppose you could add a USB dongle TV tuner, but would you be able to add internal PCIE TV tuners as well?
(Apologies in advance if all this is obvious, I haven't done any research.)
Yep you would need an external Blu-ray if you wanted to connect direct to the NUC.
The other option would be to have a separate blu ray player connected to a secondary HDMI input on your TV.
Yes a USB tuner or even a network tuner like a HDHomeRun would suffice for your aerial inputs.
God knows why anyone needs tuners these days? Who still watches FTA??
It's complete for my usage. If I want to record FTA I can use my Samsung TV. I have a standalone DVD player for my old collection, I don't have any BluRays. All my digital media is on a 4 Bay QNAP TS412 NAS.
Im looking at this form factor to run a plex and torrent server 24 hours a day, and stream via chromecast
Good choice? In terms of energy consumption, ability for streaming etc
Will just use an old 2.5inch 320gb hdd lying around for the time being to run os and programs, and external harddrive to store the medi
Future upgrade possibilities would be to install a large as you need msata drive as your boot disk. Then purchase a 2tb Seagate slim external remove from enclosure and sit in the 2.5" drive bay for your media.
so you can put a msata in AND a 2.5" drive as well?
It's a low power consumer. It will be able to run Plex and a torrent client easily. Why do you want to stream via chromecast? It has mini HDMI and mini DP outs.
oh true, i might just leave it next to the tv then, then stream it to chromecast for other computers
cheers
I'm still confused why you would have both a HTPC and a Chromecast plugged in to the same TV.
@sween64: oh typo, chromecast would be used on tvs away from the nuc
Thanks Rep….but will pass on this time
prefer to wait for the next sale from SE
I'm waiting for the next version of NUC's due to come out 1st quarter next year.
What are the likely/rumoured updates?
Broadwell microarch, so hardware VP8 codec and a few more GPU features. Probably slightly lower TDP.
Is it expired? Showing $351 for me.
Yep, looks like the price has gone back up.
Will a i5 NUC be needed if I want to use it for HTPC and steam streaming?
Or is i3 sufficient?
Also plex transcoding for 1-2 iOS devices.
Thanks,
K.
I've got the i5, haven't tested streaming yet but I can get back to you.
Thx I have messaged you.
Looks like its done. Will mark it expired.
424 AUD +Ram+Hdd for an i5 low voltage…it doesn t seem a big deal.
You realise the price has reverted because the deal is expired?
What is the trick to find out if electronics are shipped to Oz. Seems nearly every item I've tried adding to the cart will only then say it can't be shipped when going through checkout.
Doesn't it pop under the line that says whether it is in stock or not?
So something like this?
