Hi I have an old computer with XP, just received an email to install PDF when I went to install it was $89.00.
Just wondering if there is a free version as on Disability pension and not very computer literate.

I have another challenge my you tube has no sound, the speakers work,I get a picture wondering if PDF would bring back sound.
Thankyou in advance for any help

  • Do you want a program to display PDF files, or to create PDF files?

PDF is a document format, it is typically used to share text and images formatted as pages ready for printing. There's no reason for it affect/enable sound on your computer. If you have asked this question on other forums and been told to install Adobe PDF to fix the problem, you've been japed.

    • Hi Thrift I just need PDF to share text and images formatted as pages ready for printing.

I haven't asked this before just thought it may be a PDF problem as I received an email to install PDF

I don't know why I don't have any sound for viewing You Tube.

      • First off - if you receive emails about things you've never heard of, best you delete it. A lot of scams are on the world wide web ;)

PDF as mentioned is a format of a document - similar to that of a word document etc. It has nothing to do with the youtube sound problem. There are many free programs available (see some mentioned in other comments).

As mentioned for youtube, make sure the sound bar on the video isn't on mute or set to minimum. Otherwise maybe try a different website to play a video and see if the problem persists.

  • So basically you just need a PDF viewer? If so, just google PDF viewer and install the one from Adobe. It should be free. If you need to edit the PDF files, then you'll probably need a PRO paid version. You can also save word docs as a PDF file.

Does sound work on other programs?

Zip installer 32/64 bit. Choose the free option on install. Adobe is a security nightmare on an XP system which is no longer supported.

    Hi Shellyrose..

    I would recommend this one:
    http://www.foxitsoftware.com/Secure_PDF_Reader/

Its free and super lightweight on resources so if your computer is a little old it'll run it fine.

As for sound. That's a completely different question. Could be one of a number of things. Although it'd be weird if it was only not working on YouTube.

    • Hi mooney
Thankyou soooo much now I can read documents.

    • Foxit's free reader also includes a free PDF printer — once you install the program, you just select print from any software and choose the Foxit PDF printer, give it a folder\filename and it's done!

Foxit Reader is completely free, ad-free, fast, lightweight, feature-rich, fully-compatible with the current PDF filetypes, accurate rendering including the essential full font embedding, no need to install any support libraries, easy as pie to use, and the print driver is fully featured and even includes automation for large print jobs (ie. it can spool a bunch of files to a selected folder and name tem automatically).
As a system admin, I have used countless dozens of PDF printers over the years and this one is excellent, and currently top of the list — it is not perfect, but it is far and away better than what you will get for free from Adobe and many other non-free programs.
If you ever need more, you can easy upgrade to the pro version (for a tiny fraction of the basic Adobe Acrobat Standard edition).

I hope this doesn't sound like a sales pitch, but this is a tool I use several times every working day and there is SO much crapware on the internet, esp. in this category of software! Hopefully, Foxit doesn't change their winning approach to adware, like so many other companies, but for now it's a fantastic option for most people.

BlackIce and Bluebeam also have brilliant PDF editor \ print drivers but they are not free.

  • do you get sound from your speakers if you play a music file or movie file? if yes then you might have set youtube volume bar to nil/mute.

    • Hi rashed how do I check to see youtube volume bar
The speakers you can hear music via headphones only
the volume is turned up to full on computer is there a separate
      volume for you tube.
Thankyou in advance for your help

There is a volume button and a slider control next to the Play button of the youtube flash player.

Also since you're an Ozbargainer I'm also going to assume you shop online, I hope you are not doing any transactions or banking on your vulnerable Win XP computer. That's a recipe for disaster.

just received an email to install PDF when I went to install it was $89.00.

If you received an email that was sent by an unknown source, don't click any links inside this email and definitely do not install any software that it provides.

For suspicious email asking you to download or buy software, do NOT
        1. click on links inside it
        2. attempt to download it's attachments
        3. reply to the sender, even with the intent of 'unsubscribing' from future emails, do not attempt to contact them via phone
        4. enter your personal, credit card or online account information on a website that you are not certain is genuine.

The best way to deal with these emails is to delete it or disregard it.

        • Hi scrimshaw,
checked the volume button is not on mute
Played on iphone using speakers works fine
          will not play on computer
          Thankyou for your advice

  • You can also "print" to a pdf (so make it in word, libreoffice ect and 'print' to the pdf printer

    www.dopdf.com/
    www.cutepdf.com/products/CutePDF/writer.asp

www.libreoffice.org has one built in as does the FREE www.kingsoftstore.com (this one is awesome, its basicly a clone of office 2011 & its free)

for viewing foxitreader +1 as mentioned but i cant recall if it has a pint to pdf function or not.
