Gift card queries - discounts etc?

Hi everyone,

I am looking to purchase electronics worth $1000+ at Myer.

I saw this deal:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/172639

And I was thinking of using the conversion path - ie. using the 7.5% discount on egiftcards and purchasing Myer giftcards at BigW.

I currently have a $200 Coles-Myer group giftcard already.

So I have two questions:
a) is it advisable to try the conversion path? I mean, will it work? Can you use a gift card to buy another giftcard?

b) Can you generally use multiple giftcards in one transaction? Ie. using my $200 Coles-Myer giftcard that I already have and using another one I will buy from this 7.5% discount.

Thanks a lot!

** OH and also, regarding the Tourist Refund Scheme (7% tax back at the airport) will they refund GST if your purchase was made under a giftcard? I have used the scheme numerous amounts of times, but never with giftcard purchases.

You should have no problems buying Myer gift cards from Big W using an eCard, I've bought multiple vouchers recently from Woolworths using Wish Gift cards. The concept seems the same. Just use the self check-out to avoid any questions.

It's definitely effort, but if you think the reward is worth it then do it.
—> Considering you need $800 in Myer Gift Cards, 7.5% is $60. The process shouldn't take any more than 15 minutes, I'd say that's worth it. You would also earn Frequent Flyer points with an Everyday Rewards card as third party gift cards will earn points. Don't forget that when redeeming Myer Gift Cards at Myer you also earn Myer One Points, it all adds up.

In regards to TRS I don't think that the payment method matters but if it's over $1,000 AUD, the invoice needs to be in the name of the passenger and I think you need to have the item and its box (but double check that).

    Hope that's somewhat helpful!

      Extremely helpful stuff! Cheers :)

Might wait next week and see if Entertainment book has 10% off Myer giftcard. Otherwise I will just get the Macbook next week :) Cheers!

What makes you think Entertainment book will have 10% of Myer Gift Cards? I'd be quite interested in this.

        • Some guy replied to one of my comments saying to wait for 10% off since they are often down at that price.. meh.

    • TRS doesn't return money when purchased with Giftcard, a mate of mine bought macbook using cash, but sales rep at the store asked if he could use store gift cards in exchange of the money (same price, not discounts given) which he agreed, but when he was travelling overseas, TRS officer just didn't accept it because being paid in GC.

      • Cheers Johnny, I will double check this but you have potentially saved me a lot of trouble! :) Thanks heaps.

        • gift cards/vouchers (although goods purchased with gift cards/vouchers are eligible for a refund subject to all TRS requirements being met)

          Direct from Ausralian customs website….

@TassieJones14: thats good to know Tassie, I often find deals for GC and just ignore as I couldn't get TRS while flying.

          Cheers!

Purchases are not eligible for refunds if they are:

    beer, spirits or tobacco products
goods that did not have GST/WET paid on them (e.g. medicines, some foods)
services (e.g., accommodation, vehicle hire, food, tours warranties, etc.)
    gift cards or vouchers
items that have already been used (in part or in full) in Australia (e.g. food, perfume etc). It’s ok to use cameras, iPhones, clothing, etc.
do not accompany you on your flight or ship out of Australia.
Check your tax invoice; some tax invoices indicate if GST or WET has been applied to each item.

    • You mentioned before that your friend had an issue claiming a refund for items purchased with gift cards but the information you provide here only states that gift cards themselves are ineligible.

      • That sound's about right, tassie above just clarified.
