How often Subaru Australia does big sales incentives?

My fellow ozbargainers, after more than a month of drive tests and shopping around I’ve chosen the car that I want to get – Subaru Forester XT premium in quartz blue with added parking sensors.

I’ve just missed out on Subaru 5 years warranty and bonus discount that was offered by Subaru Australia on Foresters in November 2014.

Do you know if it’s worth waiting till January 2015 in a hope that there will be another Subaru sale?
From your experience, how often do they do big sales?

Thank you

  • They will be trying to get rid of 2014 stock soon, especially in December, so I assume there will be sales on these vehicles to get rid of it.

  • There will be a super sale in the middle of Jan, so I would hold of until then, but they will be clearing 2014 stock

  • In Melbourne all dealerships within 20km from CBD are the same franchise and don't move much on prices. Head further out and you will have more luck.

    Maybe use a broker.

    • Pretty sure this is true for all Aust and it is 40Km. Almost guarantee there will be a Subaru dealer 41Km outside of the capital cities, all those closer are part of 'inchcape'. 40Km+ dealers are independent dealers and my experience a few years ago when I bought a WRX was that they were thousands better off than the inchcape guys. In fact the guys I went to (lilydale outside Melb) were the dealer used by the Brokers and when the Broker's $250 spotters fee was taken off the price I came away with a better price than even the Brokers could manage.

Do not buy this car. It is ancient technology (the engines are pushing 20 years old) mates to flawed technology (CVT gearbox). Who in this day and age would actually buy a Subaru out of choice when there are so many better options? Buying a car with a CVT gearbox is just crazy.

    • Which one would you recommend out of the SUVs available in that price range?

What price range exactly? You can get a grand cherokee Laredo for less than $45k, with a full time low range 4wd. More kit, better car, more powerful, better on road and off, great gearbox, better fuel economy. There is a reason why it is Australia's best selling 4wd.

I've tried nearly all medium SUVs under 50k. Haven't tried grand cherokee but have test driven the cherokee diesel.

jeep cherokee is the best in the quality of interior equipment

          other then that:

3.6 litre petrol engine will take much more fuel then 2.0 turbocharged forester XT engine.
jeep has very bad engine reliability reputation so the resale value will be very low
Driver position and visibility is not anywhere near as good as the forester because of much smaller front and side windows.
On the road forester handles much better as well. I think it is fair assumption that off-road the Jeep will be better, but most of the time I will be using the car on-road.
Diesel was very loud and unresponsive compared to the competition such as Mazda CX-5 Diesel.

If anyone has any other car suggestions, I will be very interested to try these cars, but for now I've narrowed it down to forester xt premium, even that it has a lot of flows, it is still the most fun car to drive in it's class.

          @sagrules:

The GC petrol won't use more fuel, it has an 8 speed gearbox, i averaged 9.9l/100km combined cycle over about 3000km in a petrol GC

And look at resale of the GC. It's not low at all.

If you haven't driven the GC I don't see how you could possibly say the Subaru handles better. The GC handles well for a none sports 4*4.

Oh and it's than, not then.

        • @thorton82: "The company issued six recalls for its full-size Grand Cherokee for a litany of reasons including brake faults, unintended acceleration, electrical fire risks, and lighting problems."

          http://www.drive.com.au/motor-news/feature-a-record-year-for…

        • @sagrules: and? A recall is a good thing, not a bad thing

    • I agree, Forester is outdated, even if just released.

      They look terrible.

Actually, the 2.0L turbo engine is a new engine design shared with the current WRX.. the engine is the best thing about it.

CVT sucks… the rest of the car looks about 10 years old.. and the looks, only a mother could love.

I would at least look at a Skoda Octavia RS162 DSG Wagon before signing on the line of the XT. Would drive a whole lot better and is better on fuel. I would say more spacious as well.

      • That 'new design' is Subaru marketing mumbo jumbo. It's the same 20 year old engine that Subaru have always run, with some new bits on it.

        • Nothing really wrong with an updated version of an older design when it updated with direct injection and a new twin scroll turbo.

I must admit the JCG is an impressive car, however like all American cars I'm still concerned about long term reliability and resale value. At least they fixed the handling when they updated it. google jeep grand cherokee moose test, hilarious results.

      • Do you need the ground clearance or soft off road capability?

The eyeSight system is pretty impressive from what I gather. It beat out Volvo and Mercedes crash avoidance tests last year. The use of stereo cameras as opposed to LIDAR based systems is intriguing.

    • What is your exact issue with CVT? From an engineering standpoint, I actually rather like it. Its simpler and efficient. As far as I know, suburu CVTs are quite reliable. Its incredibly common nowadays in jap cars and they seem to work quite well.

      • They jus don't work as well as a good auto or dsg gearbox and they are inherently unreliable, due to their design. They don't have any benefits in performance or fuel economy, they are just flawed technology.

        • From a enthusiast performance perspective I agree with thorton82 that a CVT hasn't been demonstrated to be practical enough though I have read some interesting reviews about the new wrx with CVT option. Technology is always improving so with time, this may change but I wouldn't get a sports car with CVT at this stage.

I don't agree with the rest of your sentiments on CVT fuel economy and reliability after some quick research online:

As for reliability, I think its generally common knowledge dual clutch transmissions are mechanically more complex and only recently have become more reliable.

CVT do not require nearly as many moving parts as a traditional transmission and even more so than a dual clutch transmission. Less moving parts means that there’s less friction, and therefore less heat working on the parts and breaking them down.

Engineering 101, Keep It Simple = reliability. Its why Jap brands like Toyota are using them and with great effect.

Fuel economy wise, fundamentally the design and operation of a CVT translates to better fuel economy when compared to traditional autos.

        • @sinalot:

Most CVT gearboxes suffer from reliability problems because they use belts instead of chains (Toyota hybrids aside). In theory they have better fuel economy, but in the real world dsg and ZF 8 speeds are king, it might be because all those gearboxes are on better cars with more modern engines, but isn't that another reason to not buy a CVT? End if the day all major manufacturers are moving away from CVT for a reason.

  • Thanks for the moose test link - was worth a watch

    • That is not applicable to the current model Jeep Grand Cherokee.

  • FYI for those interested -
    "A record year for recalls"
    http://www.drive.com.au/motor-news/feature-a-record-year-for…

  • At the moment there is no subaru incentives. The final pricing is the same as in December for the forester XT premium.

FTA/New Year sale is fictional !!!

Volkswagen has genuine, around 5k discount sale right now if anyone is interested.

Should I keep waiting for the subaru sale?

  • I got an email saying Subaru is having a "3 day super sale" from 16-18 January on the Impreza, XV and Forester range. Includes free rego/CTP, free dealer delivery and $500 towards accessories.

I have a 3.6R Outback. With the price drop (goodbye resale for me!), the new outback is pretty good value for money.

  • Subaru having a sale this w/end. Outback 2.5 premium 2015 starting at $45k with $1k of accessories, rego & 3rd party insurance, limited colors. Rang up another dealership and they mentioned the 2016 model includes 2 extra safety sensors, which detects kids and cars at the rear when reversing from parking. 2016 is also $45k, pre-order deposit of $1k, choice of color & ready on 1st Feb.

Would the MSRP $41490 for a Subaru Outback 2.5 Premium 2016 be accurate?

    http://www.carshowroom.com.au/showrooms/subaru/outback

Read somewhere another 5-6% off MSRP can be bargined which brings it down to about $39k

Anyone paid a better price than $39 drive away?
