If it is over $1000 the invoice must have your name and address on it.
So i am pretty sure it wont count.

    from TRS:
For tax invoices over $1,000, the tax invoice must also show your name and address.

    * receipt

    Conditions are here:

    http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4263.asp

Edit: I'm sure that if you go to the service counter, they can arrange for a receipt with your name and address on it.

  • thank greenpossum i better ask for a proper invoice.

Bigw wouldn't allow me to get my name on the receipt. ><

    • +2

      That sux..

For supplies of $1,000 or more, a tax invoice must also contain the name and either the address or ABN of the purchaser.

    • +2

For a purchase of $1000, that seems like poor customer service.

      • +3

try click and collect. a name and address is added when using it with other b&m.

    • +1

As linked below, they are legally required to.

      https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/GST/Issuing-tax-invoices/#Sa…

      • write to big w and ask that them to provide a tax invoice within 28 days.

    • Knowing how their computer system works, if you put through a transaction of over $1000, the register will very specifically ask you for ABN, Name, Address and Phone Number - the operator literally had to clear those options when they sold the items to you.

Take the items and your current receipt in with you, get them to refund and resell the items, and this time have them enter the info. You might be able to get a redone receipt through their head office with name and such, but this way will definitely work.

If the peons at the desk question it, just ask for a manager, I doubt they handle this sort of thing often.

I'd write my own name and address on the invoice.

Technically 'tax invoice must also show your name and address'. Some tax invoices are hand written. Doesn't say it has to be printed.

What do you have to lose?

    • +4

      100 %, will be rejected.

      • +1

Oroton group can sell really expensive stuff and they write receipts by hand. I've claimed trs with hand written receipt.

        • Lol half printed and half written will most likely get it rejected.

Are you bringing the item back to Australia? If so, you might have to pay GST when you return.

See "I claimed a TRS refund for some goods that I now want to bring back into Australia. What do I need to know?"
    http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4263.asp#iclaimed

    • Not bringing back. It's a gift

    • customs won't know or have the time to check. most of the time they're to busy looking contraband. just bin the boxes, remove tags and labels before leaving for the airport.

      • Surely you're not advising people to lie on question 3 of their Incoming Passenger Card?

        • +3

the first part of my post is simply a description of my observations of local and overseas customs during my many international travels.

discarding boxes, tags, labels and other useless packaging is just common sense in reducing weight. by all mean keep the packaging if travelers want to pay for excess luggage.

what travelers choose to declare is entirely up to them.

I thought the intent of the scheme was to encourage people to purchase their goods here rather than overseas? EG you're going to Oregon in a week, and want to buy a macbook, so you can buy it here with 10% gst, or there with no sales tax, so the GST is refunded to keep the $ here.
      That was my impression anyway.

      • +1

The intent of the scheme is refund the GST on new goods taken out of Australia.

If you bought a MacBook overseas and brought it back to Australia, you are meant to declare it and pay any applicable duty and GST.

        • It's called depreciation. Check it out.

      • +3

The name of the scheme is Tourist Refund Scheme. It's to encourage tourists to buy here tax-free. Residents can also use the scheme if they are taking the goods out of the country and not bringing them back. Although if you do, you can take advantage of the tax-free threshold.

      • oregon is a sale tax free state. it would be favorable to buy goods there and bring it back here. a macbook probably cost less over there. so one can buy a higher spec model with no sales tax. bring it back here and pay no gst.

If you did a parcel pick up, you would be required to give your name and address

    • +1

but is it written on the receipt (tax invoice)?

      • +2

By written I assume you mean printed?

Yeah. All on one receipt. You got your items that you bought, then below is your name, address, phone number.

Better double check with the check out operator with their spelling as sometimes I see when I go help the customer by putting the items in their car, their receipt has bad typos with their suburbs and names

Or go speak with the manager of the store.
Or try a publicly visible request on Big W's Facebook page.

      • +2

+1 for the FB page. Not sure about Big W, but I asked Woolworths (Big W's parent company) something on their FB page about a refund and they contacted the store and sorted it out for me.

Pay someone on FIverr to photoshop your info onto the invoice.

    • invoice manipulation is a criminal offence.

      • I think you will find that it is not invoice manipulation which is an offence but the passing off of that invoice to gain a financial advantage which is an offence, just like handwriting your details on an invoice as suggested above.

What did you buy from BigW worth more than $1000?

If $1000 is the total of multiple items, then split the payment / separate invoices.

    • This, though they should just put your name on it. If they can't ask them to write up a paper receipt…

  • I was wondering if I wanted to get a gst refund for a gopro, would I need to bring all the accessories or just the camera itself?

    • You should read the TRS FAQ, rather than rely on strangers' advice (ie, by all means ask questions, but do check up to make sure it's accurate):

Can I take the product out of the original packaging and use it before I make the claim?
Yes. You can take the product of the original packaging and use the product. As long as you purchase the product within 60 calendar days of your departure date, you can use the product as many times as you like.
To claim the refund, you only need to show Customs and Border Protection the product or products you are claiming a refund on, and your receipts. You do not need to show or bring with you the original packaging. For example, if you have purchased a digital camera and you want to claim a refund, you just need to bring the actual camera and the receipt.

      • If you paid for the accessories, you will need to present them all.

        • Thanks for the replies,

It came with extra mounts that i dont think i'll use but I guess ill bring it just in case. Does the manual and warranty cards. etc count as 'original packaging'?

        • @luke1:
If I remember correctly, you'll only need to bring the camera and accessories because if you think about it, no one wants to carry their box everywhere

        • @taQ:
its not much of a "gift" without the box….

        • @taQ: Thanks for the advice!

If your receipt looks like this then you've succeeded.

    • +1

You succeeded, because your receipt is less than $1000.
OP's receipt is over $1000, it needs name & address.

    • +1

      My local bigW muncan :D

  • +1

No need to lie… just declare it.

Make sure it is not still in the box.

When I went through with a D7000 with lens, Macbook Pro and a S95 I got the GST all back and declare on the way in, all they asked me was if I had used the items overseas and I said yes I had already used them in Australia.

He just said to me that will be fine its depreciated to less than $1000 and let me go.

If you still have them in boxes etc YMMV.

  • I bought a camera and two memory cards from jb HiFi in the one transaction. Now I want to return the memory cards, which probably means that jb will need to modify the tax invoice. Do you think this will cause problems with claiming TRS on the camera when I go travelling next week?

    • No

      • Cheers!

  • Maybe take a print out of this to Big W:

    https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/GST/Issuing-tax-invoices/#Sa…

  • I know at JB HiFi if you ask for name/address then they write up a receipt from one of those tax invoice books (ie. a hand written one and stamped). Maybe Big W can do the same?

  • From experience allow lots of time to line up at the TRS desk as it can be busy and wont be accepted after 30 minutes prior to take off time. They often say you may be charged on the way back in and its never happened, I havent bought that much anyway and customs never have enough time to worry about peoples purchases unless you make a big deal out of it and bring it to their attention.

    • Its slightly better now with the lines, since you can pre-register your receipts and goods online then bring in the QCode which it provides ya and it speeds up the process by heaps.

    • You can get through the line quicker if you use the TRS mobile apps.

That said, I never have time to complete the app at Adelaide because I'm always the only person in line.

      Edit: snap! ^
