Good sound, decent build quality and relatively comfortable. The fully detachable cable is cool, and the case is handy. The noise cancelling is rubbish.

  • Bought these last time the were on sale. Pretty average sound, even for $50 headphones. Noise cancelling is terrible, and makes the sound even worse - muddier bass and no clarity whatsoever.

Only upside imo is that they're quite comfortable on your head.

out of interest, if these are "pretty average" for $50, what $50 headphones sound better than average?

If you are just out there for sound quality and sound quality alone, Koss KSC-75 is good. It's a clip on headphone. It's hard to adjust it, a lot of people hate how it looks. Also no noise cancellation whatsoever as well.

In terms of sound quality, however, I don't think I can think of any headphone matching up to its sound quality at that price. It's around $30 on ebay, I'd wait till Black Friday deals to come around.

EDIT: Also that is without any discounts, that's like the normal price.

        • partial credit.

KSC-75/portapros are good, and definitely great for the price. but given they have absolutely no isolation, i wouldn't consider them a comparable substitute for the UE6000. (and in any case, i think the UE6000 sound better.)

value for money wise? definitely. absolute sound quality? i know people love them, but i'm not convinced. (yes i have owned a pair.)

        • @caprimulgus:is there any other model that you would suggest around the $30-50 price mark which is highly rated?

        • @caprimulgus: I meant KSC-75, which is different from PortaPro. I actually had PortaPros till they broke down on me as well. I stuck the KSC-75 units to PortaPro headband, and used it till my gf snatched it off me. I preferred KSC-75 because it had less bass than PortaPro.

I guess audio is one of those areas that personal preference rules over everything, so if you didn't like it, that's fine by me. I was just suggesting an alternative that I personally enjoyed.

        • @AznMitch:

yeah, i was actually talking about the KSC-75 as well (that is what i have had). i meant to write both (i was lumping them together under the Portapro lineage - they use the same drivers).

but yeah, all good mate. it is a great headphone! (i happen to think the UE6000 is superior, but i pay it as a reasonable response!)

          @padman:

hmmm, not really. also, depends what you're looking for.

as above, if you're happy with open headphones with absolutely no isolation, then grab a pair of Koss KSC-75. available <$20 sometimes, you can't really go past them for value for money.

otherwise, i think you're better off spending a little bit more and grabbing something like a Creative Aurvana Live (CAL or CAL II), or the UE6000 (i personally think the UE6000 is a GREAT headphone at $50…but my honest and legitimate question above was negged, so what do i know!). :)

NB: but yes, my knowledge of sub-$50 headphones is not very deep. i purposely avoid these waters, because i think for most people it is worth jumping up to the $50-$150 range. everyone's diminishing returns will start kicking in at different places, but i'd say for the majority of people, $50-$150 is a sweet spot.

If these ever go back on sale for 50 again, I recommend these! I have a pair and they are quite good, especially for the price! I know DickSmith still sell these, but I'm not sure for how much these days.

I bought these for $99 and I thought that was a good deal, as its sound quality is on par with ath-m50 imo.
      For $49, it's definitely a bargain!
The active noise cancelling is notoriously useless if you read some reviews on the net.

  • The Philips O'Neil Headphones Dick(head)Smith had for $48 a while back.

If you are considering to spend over $200 for a pair of Beats over-ear, buy these Logitech UE6000.

  • Don't know how these can be bagged as a $40 headphone.

For the price I can't fault them

  • Black UE6000 back in stock

  • Still not cheap enough for me, honestly. Especially with that lack of Android support. Way to alienate the bulk of phone users, Logitech.

I have tried a pair of these before and I gotta say, they sounded nice and felt really comfy. But I wouldn't wanna pay more than 40 bucks including postage.

    • Worked on my phones (used a Windows Phone and a Note 2) answered the phone call and paused my music.
