        • @tyler.durden: they are not easy, but not impossible.

        • @tyler.durden: never been an issue, pretty easy with all brands, WD as easy as Seagate IMO but sometimes the tiny plactic clips may break when prying open the enclosure.

        • @PonyTable:

It also breaks clips for seagate as well

    • I wouldn't trust 5TB of data on any drive that isn't backed up. It doesn't matter what brand it is, they will all fail at some point. I work in a computer store and you see all types of drives die, even 32GB Smart Response SSDs.

      • I am sure someone also said this about

4tb, 3tb, and 2tb when those were most expensive..

the key is to have alternative backups

        depending on how valuable content..

        use

        -another hdd
        -dvd / BD-R
        -cloud

  • Paid with my Amex card and get free shipping, total of $139.88.

$139.88 AUD? With current exchange rates the price should be closer to $160, no?

  • +2

What is the total cost in AUD when you factor in the AMEX currency exchange fees?

  • I want one of these, but honestly can't think of what I'd need it for. What is everyone using these enormous drives for? Hoarding media collections?

    • +2

Steam library, lossless music, raw 24MP photos, raw video footage etc etc

    • I've only used about 500GB of my 3TB HDD, so I honestly have no idea. But more is better, right?

      • +2

you'll probably need 2 x 5TB so that each has a back up of the other. You don't want to loose 5TB of data now…

Been a part time photographer a D800 file is large and by the time you save a tiff file it's 200+mb per file.
I bought two of these last time they had them on special, from memory they were closer to 200bucks.

I currently use them to back up photos, you'd be surprised how fast they fill up.

Then again not everyone needs that much storage.

  • Will this hdd works in my mid 2011 iMac?

    • Most HDDs can be formatted for FAT or NTFS, my 3TB (standard, not 'mac') WD is used for my mac. The Amazon product description page says it is compatible, so it should be?

  • This $180/5TB is pretty good! Thanks OP.
Last week with ING 5% and Coles' $50 for $55 deal, PLUS Dick Smith sale from $189 to $179 PLUS OzBargain $15 discount code
    =$134 for 4TB :D
    $33.5/TB.

  • Price is now $149.99USD

    • still under 140

      • Yeah, still shows $139.88 USD for me. The 4TB is $149.00. OP or mod should please edit/correct the price in the deal title.

  • This must be the best price ever even considering the low AUD. Spent $189 + shipping a few months ago.

  • Ill wait for a WD, never had them fail and I hammer my 4tb with downloads, transfers and I've had no issues. I really need another drive too!

Having just bought 2 4tb red drives for my nas I was really excited about grabbing another 2 5tb drives for the other bays. Then I saw that they were segates. No thanks.

  • I was thinking to use it as an internal drive. After reading the coms here I was just about to pay for it but i've read the 1 star reviews on AMAZON and found the following:

    By David L - S
This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive with Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 (STDT5000100) (Personal Computers)
This is my only review because no product has motivated me to warn other people like this one has. Do not purchase this 5TB disk if you plan on using as an internal drive. Seagate has apparently booby-trapped (the most accurate description I can think of) the firmware in these drives to only work inside the case. They should have the decency to let customers know in advance that the disks will not function in the same manner as every other 3.5" disk currently manufactured. I bought 2 of them. Even after being fully zeroed out and reformatted both drives auto-ejected every few hours in a new 5-bay enclosure (as JBOD array) attached to a brand new Mac Pro. The improper ejections damaged the Mac Pro directory and data, caused freezes and crashes damaging the other disks in the enclosures, created S.M.A.R.T. errors and warnings, caused me to lose several files and wasted 5 days trying to track down the source of the problem. When not self-ejecting the absurdly slow read/write speeds spent a lot of time in the sub-10MB/s range.

Is it true ? can Seagate prevent it to work as an internal drive? Any comments are appreciated.

Maybe his system simply does not support 5TB drives.

      • +2

I think you're probably right. Seems to work fine in a Drobo NAS according to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-jNvFYf2tI

        • +1

Its highly unlikely it wouldn't work as an internal, and that Seagate would make the effort to do this as it means making them would actually be more expensive than normal internals (changes to production line to modify firmwares etc, but hey anything is possible right?)

Usually, and this has happened on WD's before is that the drives they use in externals seem to park the heads more than an internal or "normal" drive would, which may decrease the life of the drive or cause it to seem slow or possibly unmount. Also some people have trouble with certain Seagates and AHCI mode - this shouldn't be a problem if you are putting it in newer machines, NAS or Multi Enclosures.

From my understanding, The little USB board that is fitted inside the case/enclosure literally is a SATA to USB converter, the HDD firmware wouldn't really know what its connected to, it kinda works the other way round where your mainboard or controller works out what it is connected to (drive wise), so its likely his "5 Bay Enclosure" was a cheap import that didn't support larger than 2TB drives, or couldn't supply enough power to 5 Drives consecutively (a common problem with cheap Esata/USB "multi-drive " enclosures), didn't support 4k sectors, or AHCI.

        • if anyone pulls this out and use as internal without issue

please update this thread with the info…

  • Lucky I didn't take the risk and purchased the normal 3TB for $100 and free shipping (on Amex deal).
Makes more sense to keep all drives the same size in my N40L anyway.

  • New price 27/11/14 Now down to $129.99!!

  • still showing 139 for me

    • it was $129.99 for a couple of hours (2?) this morning. I received the camelcamelcamel notification.

  • Hmmm what's the price drop policy when it goes back up within 2 hours?

    • My policy is to wait for it to drop back!

  • dammit even with AMEX and getting free shipping this ended up being $168.70AUD

    shitty aussie dollar

  • Current price is still US $139.88, or around $165.

That is a great price for the 5TB Backup Plus.

  • Would anyone know if paying with USD is cheaper than paying with AUD ? cause their conversion rate is very high, and im wondering if anyone have tried paying with USD instead ? how much cheaper did it go ?

    • but if u pay is usd

then your bank does the conversion

not sure if there is much differences..

      if someone can calculate this…

      let us know

  • Price is now back up to $149. This might need to be marked as expired.
