Thanks OP. I'll continue preying they have a sale on plex pass for thanksgiving.

  • Argh! Just bought it at full price last week! :(

    • Just think what you could have bought with that four bucks!

Also on sale is the Android version. And, if you are the other person in Australia who was hanging out for the Windows Metro version to go on sale, it's down to two bucks as well.

      • Thanks for mentioning the android version is also on sale.

    • Would it make you feel better I got it for free on the Amazon app store deal?

  • +1

For those who want to change audio stream / subtitle steam using this, please be aware that it is not possible with normal Plex app. You will need Plex Pass to do that :).

  • Damn. I really wish my Synology DS414 could run PLEX… If i want to use this ill have to setup Plex on my PC which gets turned off quite often.

    • My old (2011 era) DS411+ runs Plex fine. I'd be surprised a newer one would not support it. It can struggle with transcoding full HD rips - but mostly I only need to transcode old Divx SD stuff and its fine with that - but now they have 'play' editions I'm going to consider upgrading next year.

      • Yup, unfortunately the DS414 doesnt support Plex. I think the "Play" versions do though.

        • Ah yes .. it uses a MARVELL Armada XP MV78230 CPU - needs to be an intel based one to run the version they have. Not sure why they haven't been able to get one compiled for that system though - seems to be a bit of demand for it in the forums. I'll have to pay attention a little when I do upgrade.

Bought this the last time, wish I hadn't. This app is soo overrated.

    • +1

Really? I love the Plex app on my iPad. It's on my home page and behind Safari it's my most used app.

      • Oh really, ok. can you please tell me how you use it? Genuinely curious, want to put that app to good use. I have a MBA, iphone and Apple TV.

        • Why did you buy plex from the beginning if you have MBA + Apple TV?

You have all the portability you want + stream to TV already.

        • +2

Ok, I have all my media on a NAS. It's an HP micro server running Debian and Plex Media Server. Then I use several Plex clients; iPad, Windows, Macintosh, Samsung.

The benefits I find with Plex are:

          • one place to manage my library, all the Plex clients see the same library
          • can watch on iPad or stream (AirPlay) to Apple TV, or use PC or TV directly
          • can Plex sync any of my media for offline (no network) viewing on iPad
          • multiple accounts on the one Plex Pass, ever family member gets full features
          • no need to convert my media, Plex will transcode correctly for the client
          • bookmarks and watch lists and queues, each family member gets their own
          • can use iPhone or iPad as an intelligent remote for any Plex client
          • metadata management, good banner and poster management, groups, etc

I hope this doesn't sound too much like a sales pitch! I'm just a huge Plex fanboi. I was previously a big fan of XBMC and it was nearly perfect except for having to manage multiple libraries. The XBMC library sync option with the shared MySQL backend wasn't a good solution. Plex solved that last problem and more, so I converted to Plex.

        • @nhand42: I'm a heavy XBMC user - surely there are downsides to using plex over XBMC? Not as many plugins etc?

I wonder if XBMC/Kodi shared library has advanced since you tried it last.

        • +1

@fredblogs: There are - mainly, xbmc is infinitely customisable but with plex you are stuck with the standard look/feel. That's the main reason I don't use it on my media centre. xbmc just trounces it for a loungeroom device - especially since transcoding is a non-issue with xbmc.

Plex is great on a laptop/tablet, though, because they do the remote access/streaming and portable ($) really well. Being able to listen to anything in my ~15k track music library on the train or just open my tablet and pick up Adventure Time where I left off at work is brilliant.

Given that ALOT of features are now locked behind the plex pass price wall it no longer makes sense that they charge for this app. Just seems like a bit of a double dip.

Dont get me wrong i love plex but as someone who just purchased a plex pass i have to say that i feel as though im being nickled and dimed a bit.

    • I'm currently deciding betwen Plex and Media Browser. Would you recommend Plex?

      • +1

I've not used Media Browser but I've been a Plex fanboi for ages and bought a lifetime Plex Pass because I liked it so much.

I had tried lots of solutions before Plex; XBMC, NAS+VLC, MythTV, DLNA, AppleTV. They all sucked compared to Plex.

I'll give Media Browser a go, now that I know about it. I suspect I'll stick with Plex.

        • Ah cheers. Heaps of people seem to be happy with Plex, ill probably give it a go.

      • +1

It would depend on the hardware you were going to use to run the server…

Plex on my Synology NAS is awesome!

        • I have a Synology DS414 but I cant run Plex Server on this model. Ill have to run it on my PC and use my NAS as a file server only.

Running Plex on the DS414 would have been perfect since it doesn't require my computer to be on all time time.

I might give Plex a go anyway. What better time to give it a try than when its on sale haha

      • +2

Definitely give Media Browser a go. I've been using it for years and I couldn't live without it.

Plex gets all the hype - but Media Browser is easily as good if not better.

        • I've just bought Plex on the sale. But given the chance ill definitely check out Media Browser.

        • Always tempted to give plex a go everytime this pops up. But i too use MB and cant be bothered setting up a dual system.

  • Any sale related to PLEX is a +1 from me, excellent solution for organizing and streaming media!

  • Just to get this straight… What's the difference if I have a chromecast?
A Chromecast allows me to cast movies (via drag drop to browser) to and stream videos to my tv

Does having a plex with chromecast essential give me a remote to control the movies?

I've been looking at plex but can't find a good enough reason.

    • Yes, it's a remote but also has a really nice interface for browsing your movie library, keeping tabs on which TV episodes/films you've watched, etc.

    • +1

I have a chromecast and using plex :) Best solution ever.

If you have a desktop as your plex server and you stream to TV that way, main problem is after every episode or if you need to pause or do anything, you have to run to your PC and do it. Maybe you PC is next to you I am not sure but mine is quite far apart.

Plex app can be used as a remote, that is using the app to open the video AND cast it to the TV. the Plex app supports chromecast directly.

  • Never had any problem with streaming HD contents or networking issue with Plex.

So good that I paid almost $80 for lifetime Plex Pass. I think that is the most money I paid before for a software.

  • +1 for over rated.

brilliant idea, FREE server but charge for app.

it's great for iPad but on computers i still preffer the web interface - and not because it's free - its just cool.

you can get a free app for chrome browser - still preffer web interface :)

  • I always use PS3 Media Server but it's quite limited. May give this a go.

  • Can't see it for free on the link provided.

    • It's discounted, not free.

  • This is excellent! Hopefully they drop the price on the lifetime Plex Pass for Black Friday too.

  • I try to use Plex for streaming 720p or 1080p movie to my 55' TV through Chromecast. However I found the screen lagging every 5 or 6 secs. I tried different video format such as m4v, mkv, mp4, but they all seemed to lag if the resolution is higher than 720p.

However for videos like 480p or the size are less than 5GB, Plex is good enough.

    • +1

Most likely issue with your pc or the wireless network. Is your pc strong enough to transcode to 1080p on the fly and does your wireless support 2ghz n at least?

      • My pc is very strong enough. i7 + NV 760Ti + 16G Memory + 500G SSD. But like you said it could be my Wireless router. Mine is Netgear N600. Don't know if it supports 2ghz. Good point anyway, I need to check my router functioning.

  • Fantastic app! iOS will be getting an update soon to support the new Plex Home features, which includes parental controls, individual user watch lists, etc.

  • My kingdom for an app that provides me with an elegant interface (like the Boxee Box interface) without having to install software that runs on a PC.

I just want to go direct to my NAS via my portable device, get a beautiful interface and 'push' my media to my Panasonic Plasma.
Don't want to have a PC running all day and would like a better interface than what the Plasma and the twonky server on my WD my cloud provides.

  • Thanks OP :)

Caved and have plex server a go on my wmc/mediabrowser htpc. Already Have my COTD $25 chrome cast from a few weeks back plugged into $200 soniq 32" from JB hifi tv in the back room. Took me less than 20 mins to set up. Plex and iphone and chromecast is freaking sweet. Was always hesitant but so easy to set up and far less lag than xbox extender. If you have smart phone and chromecast and spare tv you are stupid not to try plex for this price, especially If u use a half price itunes credit from HN to do it!
