GoPro Hero 2014 Entry Level $169 @ Harvey Norman

350

I don't know how this happened but I got to the store ready to buy it at $169 as per website. Of course scummy Hardly Normal had a $179 sticker on it, and rings up at $179.

Complained at the tills and they looked into it. Told me that it was $156.50 and they are sorry. Crazy thing is that the site still says $169

I will upload a receipt when I get home if you guys need it.

I know this is slightly expensive than the EvansCycle deal but this is Aus stock not grey.

I got it for $144 from Harvey Norman with a $25 off coupon. It would have been nice if it was $156.50 on the website, less $25.

Dang my fat fingers! I meant to + but I negged. Can mods please fix?

    • You got a receipt? I would love to go in and price match?

Or actually just the coupon would work?

      Edited… your neg was a mistake :).

Is this better or worse than the sj4000 clone?

    • +1

Was going to ask the same.

TL:DV - what was the gist of it LP400?

        • -6

          You mean TL;DR

        • +2

one is slightly lighter, but the other is sharper. Otherwise they're pretty much the same.

The outer shell in the gopro isn't replacable. If you break the tabs connecting it to the mount you're SOL.

          @Davo1111:
Also no screen on the gopro to view. Not sure if this would be too much of an issue though.

        • +2

@muncan: sort of muncy though in this case DV = didn't view. 29 minutes of pommy humour was too much.

@cornbeef: I was referring to the colon :-P

        • +2

@muncan: I'd prefer we keep my digestive system out of this ;7)

I don't get the negs given to you for a sunday. everyone's been to church, suitably repent, and should be ready to spread their love again.

        • +2

@cornbeef: maybe they don't like BTTF?

        • edit: nvm

Bargain finally a cheap gopro to put under the car on race day. Ive run out of old hero2s to sacrifice.

  • -1

Same price as on official site, HN have free pickup though

    • I'm not sure why the deal was edited but the price I got it for today was $156.50 so below retail and GoPro website (which seems to be the only other place to get non-grey stock)

Would be better to spend a little more for the Hero3 and wireless ability http://shop.gopro.com/APAC/compare?category=cameras

I have a hero 3 black but wanted a second view at the same time on the bike. Also possibility of having one on the bike and one on the chase car.

I find the GoPro app (which needs wireless so doesn't work on this one) frustrating at times but very useful when it is mounted outside the car (so I don't have to stop to change settings or start/stop filming) and also good for seeing exactly what is being filmed.

The Hero Entry Level is strapped to either my helmet or the tank of the bike so I didn't miss the wireless option. I can manipulate the buttons while riding (I mean only when stationary with the bike off officer).

TL:DR - depends how you use it and what you use it for

          lol

and back to the future we go.

  • Are these water proof? Can take underwater? Or do you need to purchase separate housing?

    • Its in a waterproof casing by default & can go as low as 40m

  • This pricing thing on their website has happened twice to me now, both times "oh yeah let me check the computer… Yep still on 'special'"

  • Back to $179

  • I'm really considering this as a second angle camera, already have a 3 be and I never use the wifi or the remote as it drains the battery.

Pity the price went back up would of grabbed one today!

  • i saved my money and then got my wife to agree to spending more and got mine as a birthday present.
that way i got a Hero3 black ( didnt know the + models were ust about to launch :( ).

The remote that it comes with make sit so much more user friendly if wanting to start / Stop recording in the car or on the bike.

Yes the wifi app for the phone is greta for setup, but once you are moving it befomes cumbersome to try to use a phone ( password locked too normally ) to start and stop.

All i do is press the red button.

Spend the extra if you can :)

    Just my 2c

  • Is anyone able to compare for me from experience where the new line sits? For example, it the new 'entry level' model the equivalent of the Hero 3 Silver? Just so I have an idea of their video quality etc

    • I believe its in line with the 3 white edition if I'm not mistaken, specs are similar except you get ''super view'' which the white didn't have. Trade of is the non removable battery and unit from the case itself and No wifi etc

The video quality is fine at 1080 30 and there is a low light mode also. Youtube has some good sample footage if you have a look.

    • Yes, this camera is closest to the HERO3 White. See the comparison table.

  • can get a sj5000 at this price which has better features and camera quality

    • That is a vague statement and of little value. If you mean the generic Chinese "SJ5000s" then by and large they are copies of the SJCAM SJ4000. Yes, they have some different features to the GoPro Hero but being Chinese knock-offs they have significantly lower build quality (as evidenced from the various SJ4000/SJ5000 forums). If you mean the new SJCAM 5000/5000+ then these are of similar price (SJ5000) or more expensive (SJ5000+) and given that they haven't yet been released the build quality is unknown.

      • If you didn't read what I said "at this price" obviously it wouldn't be the Chinese knock offs. Actually they have been released and considering the build quality of the s4000 wouldn't you expect the s5000 to be a better build quality? Just a little common sense

        • I regard all the "SJ4000/SJ5000/SJ6000" action cameras as Chinese "knock offs" of the GoPro HEROs - mainly because of their very similar design and the fact that they fit virtually all the GoPro mounts. Of course, it's ironic that the original SJCAM SJ4000 has been copied by other Chinese manufacturers leading to assertions that some models are "genuine" and others "fake" when it can be argued that they are all copies of the GoPros.

What is obvious when reading the posts in the two major owner forum threads dedicated to the SJCAM SJ4000: RCGroups.com and Techmoan is that quality control has been a problem for this camera since it was first released at the start of the year. DashcamTalk has a good summary of the issues. It would appear to be "hit or miss" as to whether a purchaser receives a unit that functions correctly or not.

Although the SJCAM SJ5000/SJ5000+ has been advertised for pre-sale by various vendors for several weeks now it would seem that they haven't yet been released, with the best current estimate of the release date being 10 December 2014 (see here and here). I haven't read of a customer having received one and actually using it. Given that these newer cameras are being built by the same manufacturer I'd expect that the build quality would be similar (although I'd be pleasantly surprised if it was significantly improved).

        • @duskybay: the specs have been released and im only comparing based on them. I usually dont compare technology based on people's opinion/review as you never know how biased one is. sjcam 1/2.3 cmos 16mp vs gopro 1/2.8 5mp and in my original comment i stated camera quality. personally i prefer camera quality + features over sufficient build quality

        • We seem to have had a good discussion here, kungfu_tofu. I'd only add that specs don't necessarily translate into video/image quality. For example, the SJCAM SJ4000 has always claimed to provide 780p video at 60 fps, but this has been proven to be not the case - its 30 fps with each second frame a copy of the previous one. Similarly, it claims to support 12MP images, but the general consensus is that it's closer to 2MP. Anyway, let's hope that the new models live up to the hype.
