Optus leads the mobile Internet pack towards VALUE with by-the-day prepaids...

I know this is coming a bit late, as it's about:

  • Optus' MyPrepaid by-the-day options

Pay only when you use (a bit like MyNetFone's WhirlpoolSaver deal, in VoIP).
Any money you prepay remains for 6 mon's (MyNetFone is more generous on $$).

Why should one ever lose such pre-payments at all?
Why shouldn't the mobile data that we payfor remain ours to use anytime in the future?

Well, value is not yet high enough to give us that, AFAIK.

Still, Optus' by-the-day prepaid is leading the pack towards value, eg, by offering a "nearly free" 1-way mobile phone service, to enable keeping in touch with family & friends (ie, if we're prepared to pay for the calls that we make to keep-in-touch).

It's a bit like Telstra's long gone "In Contact" service, in the landline market, of its time. Caller pays; user of service couldn't dial out, except to Telstra or 000.

But the Optus by-the-day prepaid is good only for those who can reduce the number of days (each mon) they make calls, send SMSs &/or use data.

Someone whose employer provides and funds a phone for their weekday use, might find value in it, on weekends. $4 for 1 GB of Internet data, almost seeks a good price,
In t8day's market.

  • Link? I can't see any plans like what you've described.

  • Seems to me that you pay $2 per day for every day that you use your phone, for calls or data. You can prepay a minimum of $10, and that credit lasts for six months, but only for five days of use.

Data lasts only for the day, not six months. So, $4 per gig is for a single day, and expires at the end of that day, and is on top of the $2 per day.

One of us seems to have completely misunderstood what they're offering!

    • The offer is $2 per day that you use the service, you receive unlimited calls and text and 500MB of data. You pay $2 even if you only send one text or open one webpage using network data and so forth. Your credit would last for a month or so if you only used it on the weekend…although you'd probably be using it from after work on friday so it would end up being $6 for the three days

  • These are PrePaid BYO SIMs, you can get brochures & 2x SIM sizes from, eg, DSE, Foodland (SA), etc.

Beware: SIM may have Expired (several of DSE's were 1 Nov 2014, & ALL of a large, new Foodland store's were Expired, which they blamed on Optus rep's, who "visit regularly").

From one of the several brochures (but in my words):

    • My PrePaid Daily: ($1 f unlim SMS -or- $1.50 unlim (Talk & SMS) or $5 w/430 MB Data)

      1. No use days: FREE (others can ring or SMS you) = InContact + SMS-in

      2. On first use: $1.00 / day (buying unlimited SMS)

      3. Go over 30 min. TALK TIME (ie, when you've dialed Out) -or-
over 40 MB of DATA (on SAME DAY),
it Auto-Bump: $1.50 / day (buying unlimited TALK & 40 MB more Data)

      4. Go over 80 MB Data:
        It Auto-Adds: $0.50 / extra 50 MB …up to $5 / 430 MB for the day

    • My PrePaid Daily Plus: ($2 f 500 MB Data + unlim (Talk & SMS) -or- $4 w/1,024 MB)

      1. No use days: FREE (as above)

      2. On first use: $2.00 / day (buys what 3's does $1.50, above, w/500 MB (not 40 MB)

      3. Go over 500 MB Data:
It Auto-Adds: $2.00 for extra 524 MB (once only): Total 1,024 MB / day

Nice about both: Free incoming SMSs & Voice Calls (Credit lssts 6 months, min $10)

Pick & Declare $1 (up) -or- $2 (up) before the / each day (eg, online)

SIMs cost $2 (but give you First Day on Optus)

Stores sell a $10 SIM (I don't know if you get a Free day on Optus…?)

[Online-only] Deal: You can pay $5 for 1 such SIM (either size) & get $10 credit, BEFORE 1 Dec 2014.

The only thing that may preclude you from filling all your old phones with "My PrePaid Daily" is the FOOLISH ( IMO ) gov't restriction:

    • only 5 activated SIMs / person (at any time)

    The $2 / Day mode leads to $4 / 1,024 MB = an "honest" 1 GB, IMO.

That's a cheap way to buy Data for small users of Data, w/unlim Talk & SMS thrown-in.

    VirginMobile is better (if you don't need SMS+Talk), eg: 12GB / $40

    • "only 5 activated SIMs / person (at any time)"

      Wrong.

You can have as many SIM cards as you like, at any time.

I have 25 at the moment in my name!

  • Telstra InContact still exists, and always allows FREE CALLS at all times to:
