Placed a pre-order on the Motorola Moto 360 on 15 Nov 2014.

The site said "Due to supplier delays, the Motorola Moto X (product code 2764191 and 2764190) advertised at $698, and the Moto 360 Watch (product code 2764193) advertised at $325 in the Harvey Norman ‘Latest & Greatest’ catalogue, are late arriving into stores. Stock is expected at the end of November. Harvey Norman’s raincheck policy applies and orders will be taken. Offer ends 23.11.2014".

So was expecting it to arrive at the end of the month. Somehow, it arrived today 18 Nov 2014 :)

  • Yep, seems to be the cheapest at the moment for those considering getting one.

  • Great price for local stock and pw dollar. more interested in the LG R watch for it's ability to take generic bands and better battery life & heart rate monitor

    • according to a review i read just this morning, lg r is way better than moto

    • +1

Battery life is around 2 days. I can think of nothing worse than having to charge my watch every second day. A friend of mine has a pebble and he charges it once a week. That is much more tempting.

      • +1

I had opportunity to test a Gear Live for a few weeks, and I currently own a pebble. I actually found daily charging much less onerous than I expected. Each night when I went to bed I just took the watch of and put it on to charge, and in the morning I grabbed it.

If you're often not going back to your own bed even every second day then it could be a problem, but otherwise I don't think it is as bad as people imagine.
(If you're often not going back to your own bed, then the Sony Smartwatch 3 would be a better choice because you can charge it directly via MicroUSB.

I really like my pebble, and I quite liked the Gear Live except that I much prefer a screen which doesn't have to glow to display (i.e. I prefer e-ink over AMOLED)

Edit: I should point out that as much as I enjoyed Android Wear, there is no way in hell I would pay more than $180 for any Android Wear device. They are nice, but the utility simply doesn't justify more than that to me.

        • I would have to agree with your point re the price point.

Having to charge it overnight would not be ideal for me, because I actually like the sleep tracking information from my Pebble (using Misfit).

The other point is that it Android Wear should only take an hour or so to charge, so unless it has overcharge protection keeping it on charge for 7-8 hours could be bad for the battery.

      • Just wish the Pebble had Qi charging. Maybe the v2 will have it?

there is no way in hell I would pay more than $180 for any Android Wear device

Absolutely agree! I mean the asking price for the Moto 360 is $330! You could get a very nice spec'ed phone for that hefy amount! I got a brand new Xperia Z1 for that amount.

        • Minor point is that it's a watch, not a phone, so it's more than a little irrelevant what sort of phone you could get for the money.

        • @Mic Cullen:

Just saying that the price doesn't justify what you get for it. Wouldn't cost that much to produce compared to a phone, but yet they sell it at over the top prices. Should be classed as a luxury item. Not everyone is rich (not being stinge either).

        • The asking price would be a lot higher - $330 this is the cheapest price for local stock ATM.

        • @grab_ur_freebies:

Yes, but a phone has a lot more physical space and does different things, so it's not comparable.

    • Here's a direct comparison between the two from PC World Australia - they believe the Moto is the one to go for.

"…these smartwatches are miles apart. The LG G Watch R lends the impression it is another electronic gizmo. The Moto 360 on the other hand doesn't: it is a time piece evolved."

Having said that, I couldn't be happier with my $79 Pebble - just waiting on the black carbon skin to arrive to make it complete.

The review was a sham and absolutely pointless, he had no idea what he was doing and clearly had his mind set from the start that the Moto 360 was the winner.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Have you also had a chance to use both units and compare them side by side?

      • I've got a 360 and like it a lot, but that review is utterly worthless. The author can't even write proper English, let alone make cogent points.

I have the LG G watch which I bought via gumtree for a very low price.

While the form factor of both the Moto 360 and G Watch R look amazing (esp compared to the original G Watch), IMO i just think the Android Wear platform is just way too raw for the prices being asked.

Even if battery life were significantly better, it's still a high price to pay to get notifications on your wrist.

    • Out of curiosity, how much did you pay for the LG G (if you don't mind saying) and do you feel like you got good value?

Edit: wow, looking at the asking prices for the G watch on GumTree, I am starting to wonder if I should have bought one of them rather than the pebble…

      • I got a LG G watch on Gumtree about 2 or 3 months ago.. its been great. I had the opportunity to buy the 360 but turned it down. I think the G watch will do until a 2nd gen 360 turns up.. (with better processor and battery, and hopefully IP68 and better mic's)

      • +2

$75. It was by far the lowest price I'd seen on gumtree and ebay. Given what i use it for, i definitely would hesitate to pay anything more. I use it to sift through what notifications are worth me taking out my phone for — so it cuts down looking at my phone.

I was considering a pebble but i just didnt quite like the look of it and i was/am betting that google will develop it's Android Wear platform quite quickly. So part of how i 'valued' it is in terms of its potential as well.

Some brief points worth noting that i havent heard of much:

        • because the battery is small, it charges insanely fast. So when you think of 'charging the watch' it's not the same as 'charging your phone'. I charged it once while waiting for the train and probably got 20% into it. To put that into perspective, it is 2:50pm and i am on 80% on my watch.

        • resolution doesnt matter so much on a watch. It obviously doesnt look as sharp as phone screens, but you'll only be looking at it for a few moments at a time. You're not using it to look at videos/pictures.

        • +1

I use mine mostly for voice commands.. I'll speak my hangout and sms replies while driving, or in the shops.
Its also great for controlling music and launching navigation mode while driving. etc…

        • +1

Yeah, when I had the Gear Live to test I found it great for seeing notifications (which I can do on my pebble) but also for speaking voice commands.
The only reason I don't have buyer's regret right now for my Pebble (vs buying a LG G watch on gumtree/ebay) is because I still much prefer e-ink displays. I'm looking forward to seeing the transflective screen on the Sony Smartwatch 3, though, which is the next best thing.

  • I believe the LG G Watch prices on Gumtree are because LG had a bundled with the G3 and most folks are choosing to get cash for it.

I tried the G Watch, Gear Live for work and I prefer the screen of Gear Live (but the charging clasp was a pain). I was considering the 360 but ended up getting the G Watch R from the BetterIT deal here. Am happy with it even though the 360 does look slicker.

  • The G watch r is pretty good. Two days battery with screen always on (goes into dimmed mode but still can have full colour watchfaces when dimmed). Battery is probably on par with the Sony Smartwatch 3 but the SW3 dims into greyscale and doesnt look that nice when dimmed.

I was going to get the Moto 360 but got the G watch R instead and am happy with it apart from the defective screen on mine (waiting for a RMA)

  • I really can't stand the black bar on the bottom of the 360's face. Totally kills the sleek look of it :/
