Self Propelled Lawn Mower - Honda or similar

Hi all.
Looking for a SP lawn mower for the parents, they are too stubborn to let me pay someone to do it, so I want to try and get them one to make it easy for them.

I went through Masters and Bunnings today, and found the prices to be a bit un-exciting, anyone get any hints or tips. I would like a 4 stroke.

I wanted something like https://www.masters.com.au/product/900031258/tpe-530mm-self-…, but a 19" would be fine I think. I have always had B&S or Honda lawn mowers.

Cheers all.

Alan

Self-propelled mowers are always heavier, and can be a lot harder to use. If you have a level block, and mow regularly, they can be a reasonable idea. But a lighter mower could well make the mowing even easier, which I'm guessing is your aim. It could be that one of the newer battery powered mowers is suitable. Bigger wheels also make mowing easier, so look for that as well.

Hi, Alan, I am not surprised for what you said about your parents. Me too as an oldie refusing my daughter's suggestion to get our lawn done by someone else . Fortunately I got one Ozito electric lawn mower from Bunnings Store for the past two years to help me out. It is very light and do the job well. Ozito now has a new model with 1400 power and costs $149.00 with two yeas warranty . I suggest why not buy this one for your parents.

Can I ask how big your lawn is? Light sounds good!

My Ozito 1100 does well with my medium size lawn. I am sure the new model of 1400 can even do better. It is very light ,easily movable ,simple to operate . I just love it. In fact I am thinking to buy this new model if not because the present one is still very useable. The catcher is no problem to fix into its place.

One quick hint: when you're testing them out in store, see how much of a pain it is to remove and reattach the catcher. I bought a Rover last summer and while I've been happy with the build quality, the ergonomics are awful especially on the catcher. You have to line it up with the hooks EXACTLY or the lid won't click into place, and you which you can't see the hooks from above. There is nothing to 'guide' the catcher onto the hooks. The handle isn't quite on the balance point and is awkward to get at as the handlebar is in the way.

If I'd known to look for that particular thing in the store, I would have paid the extra hundred and grabbed a Honda instead.

      Good advice:) Thank you!

      • don't worry about bagging. most sp mowers mulch to some degree. easier for the user and better for the lawn.

        edit
have a look at the troy bilt tb230 and the john deere js26. both comes with bs 190cc engines.

I would take a look at the Rover pro cut series. I ended up going with the non self propelled and it's awsome. No issues with installing the catcher.
There is a few reviews on YouTube of the self propelled model and it also gets a very good wrap on the indi mowers forum from contractors.
Added to this masters sells them and are way over priced so you can get the 10% price match. I picked up mine for $427.50 after price matching an online mower shop (mines not self propelled though).

Try this on for size : http://www.burnsmowers.com.au/rover-lawnmower-pro-cut-560-se…

For that amount of money, you'd might as well buy a ride on lawn mower and have some fun.

If they didn't have a narrow gate to the back that would be an awesome idea. Maybe then I'd even do it;)
