Desktop computer for gaming

Any recommendations in Brisbane for my son to buy a desktop computer for gaming. We live in the Western Suburbs. Thought a smaller shop would give better specs for the money than going to HN or JB. Thanks

        best dad ever

      • Take a look at the Extreme high-end gaming PC on the OzBargain wiki page. Should be able to fit within your budget and you can get it built by MSY pretty cheaply if you don't feel confident doing it yourself.

  • I don't know if you'd consider building one yourself but this is normally my first go to: (http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_sg_whirlpoolpcs_gaming_conf…)

    • I don't think he would do it, but a great link to go to if he can get someone else to do it.

      • As Donga noted above, It's probably better for you to order parts on MSY and then get them to build it.

        There is one in Brisbane.

Also when getting a desktop remember the network card (or get a usb wifi adapter) if you use wifi.

With the above whirlpool link, I'd go for something ~$1700 range and then use the rest on a monitor/keyboard/mouse/headphones

  • How old is your son?
Maybe you and him might like to have a go at building one.
If that scares, you, many independent computer shops will do it for you at a fraction of the price.
Also, you can get a very decent computer if it's just for gaming for under $2000

Computers are pretty easy to build, everything is fairly colour coded, only 1 spot to fit stuff. I'd build it for you for free if you were in Sydney, its a very enjoyable experience (barring a fault item that requires diagnosis). There is plenty of guides out there to walk you through the process, if you are after a complete list of what you should buy and a commended configuration there is plenty of people that would help you, including myself.

  • ROFL, extreme high end gaming box with hexa core! Slap a 5930K and 16GB DDR4 up in it at least.

  • Go to www.logicalincrements.com. For $2000, budget around $500 for screens, mouse and keyboard, so you would be looking in the "excellent" box.

Once you have decided on the config, ask msy to quote and build it for you.

Don't skimp on case, screens, keyboard and mouse. These will affect your daily enjoyment more than a extra 2 or 3% performance.

Make sure your get windows 8.1. No need for pro.

  • Go to a few of your local computer repair shops and tell them you want a gaming desktop for your son, they will give you a written quote. you can then compare that quote to another computer shop, so you can compare prices.
Go anywhere rather than a big retail store, you will get ripped off price wise and specs as well.

At least getting a custom made one you can get the latest parts, you and your son can choose the case and colour etc.
If you look also in Gumtree under desktops in Brisbane, you will see a few people make them up for you and only charge maybe an extra $ 50- $100 for their labour, some of these are uni students etc.
I would never buy one on line from them but you can phone them and go around to their house to see them
    good luck

Get it done from a computer shop — try UMART or MSY if there's one in the area.

At least if there are any disputes it will be one against a business (you have rights as a paying customer) and not against some random individual.

He went to Umart today as its only a couple of suburbs away and they are building one for him. Thanks for everyones help

    • Check out some forums for reasonably priced computer parts. CPU ~ $250, graphics card ~$200, motherboard ~$200, RAM ~$50, case ~$100, SSD ~$150, HDD ~$150, screen ~$200, mouse and keyboard ~$100
    • Buy the parts yourself from MSY
    • Watch some YouTube videos on how to build a PC
    • Have a bonding experience with your son as you build it together. It's super easy.
