Careful! If you sign up for their private registration, you will need to provide photo ID to transfer away.
I just transferred my domains from Godaddy to Gandi, who provide free private registration.
Also be aware they demand ID if they single out your payment for verification, and if you don't trust GoDaddy enough to oblige, they cancel the order but hold onto the domain such that you can't just choose to register it elsewhere.
and then charge fees that you "automatically" signed up for with initial registration.
@altomic: Thanks for the feedback. I've had many many domains with GD, mostly private and haven't ever come across this when transferring out. I've always transferred out to NameSilo, and usually remove private first (NameSilo restriction, making private seem quite redundant!). I like GD for their cheap registration offers - but that is to total extent of my favour towards them. Once they removed renewal discounts, they lost me!
never had any issues with godaddy…. even with their private registration. though haven't used it for a few years
good offer, I just renewed a domain with namecheap for $10+ because I didn't have to time to look for a voucher and transfer my domain away … typically I leave it until the last minute … didn't pay off this time for renewing early :|
hard part is finding a decent .com which isn't already registered
