$31 more for oneplus one. http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/OnePlus-One-16GB-…

    Pros:
    5.5 inch
Capacitive buttons (can be turned off)
    Snapdragon 801
    Better camera
    Better battery life
runs cyanogen (stock + more features)

    Cons:
Made by oneplus instead of a reputable business like LG
    Large form factor
Not as much dev support as Nexus 5
    Issues seem to relatively common

      Pros:
      5.5 inch

Good list, but I wouldn't rate the 5.5 screen as a pro, they are getting too big to fit in one's pocket. As you say, the form factor is "large"

      • +3

It really depends on the size of the overall phone, rather than the screen size.

e.g. the LG G3 has a huuge screen, but the overall size isn't that big.

The LG G2 has a 5.2'' screen, while having a similar phone size to the Nexus 5 (4.9'' screen).

        Conclusion: LG makes awesome phones!

        • +1

But as I understand it, the LG G3 STILL doesn't have 4.4.4

LG have always been awful at delivering firmware updates, and nothing appears to have changed. Anyone thinking of buying anything with the LG label on it should be aware how poor the software side is, no matter what the hardware is.

@sane: I know but I don't think it puts off most people. Probably 10-15% of people actually care about which version of Android is on it as long as it is 4.x

        • +1

          @sane:

Most likely, lg will skip 4.4.4 and just go for android L… Like many other companies.

          Also most people don't care.

@voolish: Kit Kat is also less memory hungry… increasing battery life. I have the S4 contracted with Vodafone… and still no update for Kit Kat. I'm still using jelly bean :( The software is slow and laggy, and overall the phone doesn't feel up to the standards of where phones are now. Software definitely counts in my opinion.

        • @mirridon:

Can't you just install cyanogenmod? Then you'll have the latest Android (4.4.4 KitKat).

If you don't know how, check out these instructions for installation. They are written for noobs (normal folks), easy steps with pictures, from start to finish. Easy reading: The AmigoTips - Layman's guide to Cyanogenmod

        • @inose:
The problem (one of many) with Samsung phones is there's a gizzlion different hardware revisions. Seriously people, Nexus!

        • @inose:

Not interested in mods or anything :/ I don't want to run into any issues down the track, I'm facing enough buggyness right now.

        • @PainToad: Well… I dropped my phone the other night (actually true). It was a toss up between a Nexus and a new screen, which would have cost $250 to replace the entire front, as I've damaged the MB as well…. So I bought a nexus for the hell of it. So far, so good:) Bought it from the play store though, got it in 4 days. Winning.

I read that there is also a disadvantage with the Chinese version of the OnePlus (the version in the DWI link) if you are travelling due to less less LTE bands? This would be a problem if you are planning to visit the USA etc.

Hasn't it been this price from DWI for a while now?

Anyway if you see anything else you like from DWI and can spend $500+ you get $30 off with paypal.

Bought a Nexus 5 from DWI that was DOA 6 weeks ago and they are really bad with responding to emails, following up etc. Had to lodge a paypal dispute for a full refund, still waiting for my money. Buyer beware.

        Hi Enrique,

I have just been informed that the inspection of the DOA phone will not proceed unless I close the PayPal dispute.

It has now been 7 weeks since I ordered the Nexus 5. I have no choice but to buy a new phone from elsewhere given the delay and the fact that DWI will not even inspect the phone until the PayPal dispute is closed. I will not be closing the PayPal dispute for 2 reasons:

        1) you indicated to me via PM it was OK to leave the dispute open. It would be good if you could pass on the info to your reps as they have pressured me to close the PayPal dispute on two occasions now.

        2) following the advice posted on here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/168115

Note in good faith I did not mention DWI on that thread, but I will shortly be posting an update on this debacle.

Posting on this thread so people know what they are in for if their Nexus arrives DOA like mine did.

        • Wow. Send a copy of their threat about not proceeding without cancelling the dispute to PayPal, that's a massive breach of their merchant T&Cs. Very dodgy DWI, will never shop with you that's for sure!

        • This is super shoddy.

For the record, a DWI purchase I made a few years back used a one-off email address. It now gets a ton of spam and PayPal phishing emails.

  • Samsung S4 in DWI is $359.00. The major differences are Better Camera in S4,card slot in S4, Better Speed in Nexus 5? then Brand?

I have been using Samsung GS4 for a while now. The problem with GS4 is the long wait for software updates. Samsung started releasing Android 4.4.2 updated for GS4 almost a year back and I only got it 3 days back (I am using unlocked 4G international version I9505). I didn't like the bloatware and Touchwiz. I know there is a Playstore edition of GS4 but I bought mine before it was released. Moreover it's hard to find the Playstore edition at $359 these days.

      • +2

you do realize that you can put cyanogenmod on gs4, its so easy to, you just downlaod the installer and let it do everything, i had it on mine for the last 2 months couldn't be happier, amazing speed, much better than shitty touchwiz, i dont see many reasons to upgrade atm, only for a better camera..

        • I ran into battery issues few months after I bought the phone. Because it is under warranty I got a replacement battery shipped to me for free. So I don't want to install custom ROMs and break the warranty just to be safe in case if I run into similar problems in future.

I am using Aviate launcher and I am loving it but the Touchwiz is still there lying underneath which I can't uninstall. Anyways that doesn't bother me much. Now that I got Android kitkat I don't need to worry for some time. I was more upset by the fact that I couldn't mirror my phone screen using my Chromecast not by the delay in the update. Franky speaking I don't see any visible advantage of Kitkat over Jellybean.

          @dealsfinder:
wait until lollipop update . youll def see a difference… actually maybe - depends how much samsung wants to screw it up lol

dont expect the update anytime soon though… cos samsung.

        • @dealsfinder: forget warranty just put on cyanogenmod the diference is huge, no lag what so ever. smooth as butter. samsung needs to fix up their software lag issue, maybe take some notes from Motorola.

      • Yes, Cyanogenmod installation has been made really easy since they became a commercial venture. The only hassle for me is having to back up my data before installing, a small inconvenience compared to what one can get from Cyanogenmod.

        • +1

exactly, its not hard at all, takes like 30 mins max if you are taking your time. that is the backup, installation is like 10 min you just leave it and let it do its thing. plus their releasing lollipop too so im sure cyanogenmod 12 "lollipop" will roll out even before Samsungs official update or LG or any other manufacture, except obviously the nexus lines phones

Better Speed in Nexus 5? then Brand?

      You wish lol

    • +1

The major difference is lots of people won't touch anything Samsung related, they really are the new Apple. Plus Nexus devices have a much larger custom rom community, rather than shitty ports. Eg. ParanoidAndroid.

  • +1

Same price as Kogan. They have free shipping as well every few weeks if you're prepared to wait. Not sure if they're much better than DWI …

  • is the 12 month warranty - google warranty? or DWI aus warranty

    • DWI warranty what I have read. Not sure if you have to pay to send back to Aust repairer though. Was gonna ask them this week as am considering the 32gb from here.

      • +1

        hopefully its google play warranty
        Aus google warranty > DWI

i rather deal straight with google if any problems arose

  • This vs Moto G (2014)?

    • +3

      this…
moto G is a budget phone?

  • There's better options with similar or better specs and similar or lower price. Unless you must have a nexus…

    • +1

      care to give examples?

    • +1

Oneplus is the only thing I can think of for similar price.
      Yeah other examples please

  • This needs to get around the $250 mark before I consider upgrading from my Nexus 4.

    • LOL. For me under $300 delivered seems like a realistic target.

  • I'm assuming price would go down further when N6 comes out

    • +1

Considering the N6 is supplementary line, rather than a replacement, I see no reason for the N5 to drop because of it.
