An excellent price for the overclockable Core i5 standard gaming processor. Much cheaper than MSY ($278) Just picked one up myself.

Not sure what you're trying to say. I had a quick look on ebay and the nearest price was $291.50 with free delivery.

Buying CPU or graphics from Amazon is just too much risk. Your package get throw around too much in transit. No to mention if you have to send it back it's another $50 with tracking.

        • Oh I see, I guess it is a bit of a gamble…

I still don't understand what you mean by "2nd from ebay from overclockers?". I'm genuinely interested in buying a CPU. Is this "OverClockers" a type of store on eBay and by "2nd" did you mean 2nd hand?

        • +4

No risk in buying Intel CPU's as they handle warranty directly.

Anything goes wrong a phone call to Intel and they will FedEx pickup old CPU, and FedEx deliver replacement. All usually within a week.

Great to know xuqi, for the future. I should've pulled the trigger when I had the chance, but I was deterred by jasecs comment and wanted to know more.

        • @turna:

oh there is a forum called overclockers ;) thought everyone knows.

  • Why not just get a FX-8350? Very similar performance, no wait time

    • +13

They're not similar in performance at all. They're fundamentally very different chips. The i5-4690K would absolutely spank the FX-8350 on single core stuff, but the FX-8350 would have the edge for highly threaded tasks.

If you're gaming, the i5, especially in unlocked form, is a no brainer. Not many games are gonna be making use of 8 cores.

Not to mention the lower TDP of the i5 lowering the usage of ever increasing electricity prices plus with the approach of summer the lower heat output will have a positive affect on temperature of the whole computer.

Cuz AMD systems have much lower resale price unfortunately. I'd love to support AMD, but that is a sad fact.

      • +3

Non of them have high resale value unfortunately. (And I think people who only aim for high resale value would probably buy a Mac anyway, separated computer parts are hard to sell at a high price.)
I got the FX8350 for $209 just over a year ago, which I thought was good value, and funnily it looks like the price hasn't dropped at all, still around the $209 mark.

        • Do people normally sell second hand parts? If do the prices/reliability make it worthwhile to pursue? Also, where would they be most commonly sold; whirlpool threads/ebay/gumtree?

Please excuse me for the torrent of questions but I'm looking to build a new system and I have been out of the computer market for quite a while…

Do people normally sell second hand parts?

eBay is the most common outlet. Then Gumtree, and probably even Facebook.

If you want to sell without the hassle of dealing with nutjobs, OCAU forums has a trading/selling section. You can access this subforum once you have been a long term member of the forum and have a minimum number of posts. Of course most people that you sell to will be fairly knowledgeable and you probably won't get very high offers (but you never know).

        • @habibby:

I've found some decent deals on Gumtree. You have to take your time and monitor the parts section to spot the deals.

Some of my recent GT purchases below:

          i7 3770K boxed for $180
          i5 4590 (non-K) for $170 (This was ~3 months ago)
          Silverstone Fortress FT02B $50 (USB3, window)

Also got very lucky with a local guy fire selling some parts ~5 months ago on GT:

          i7 4770K $150
          Asus 780Ti $350
          32GB Corsair Dominator kit $200

This was more a being in the right place / right time scenario though, as afterwards I learnt he had also sold the same parts to others interstate, which they never received and I paid cash & picked them up locally.

E-Bay is safer if you buy things that need delivery. I would only ever purchase locally from GT.

Plus the FX-8350 has ~50% higher power consumption.
