feel free to post a better deal for a 1TB portable hard drive by a reputable manufacturer.
I got a 2TB Toshiba for $104 about 3 weeks ago.
that is better value but $104 is not less than $78. not everyone needs more than a terabyte

Exactly, I could say the recent Dick Smith deal which offered a 4TB Seagate Expansion external hard drive for $150 would be much better value.
was the 4TB a 2.5" portable HDD, without a need for power supply?? No? didn't think so. You aren't comparing apples to apples. My 2TB was a 2.5", no power supply required.
You just need to do a search and see much lighter, slimmer, USB powered 2.5" externals have been under $70 pretty much constantly, here is one past example;
