Best Android phone (Price range - $500-$650)

I'm interested to know what is your personal preference and why?

I'm a Samsung person because my needs are simple a good camera, a large screen, fast processing and multi tasking.

  • Everyone knows the Nexus 6 is going to be 5.9 inches right? That's bigger than the Galaxy Note 4.

  • Note 3 is better than all even note 4

  • My favourite android smartphone is the BlackBerry Passport ;). I've heard Optus will have stock available next week.

But of those you've listed I'd have to go the Sony xperia z3.

    Gotta love the weather sealing.

  • wow a phone that hasnt even been announced yet is leading the votes..does that mean nexus 5 would win over htc's, lg's, sony's & samsung's previous flagships?

    • +1

Because it's the only phone in the poll that is an official google product, meaning the latest SW updates and the least bloat. And like other Nexus devices, it's going to be priced fairly competitively ($400~450) and will have the best price / performance ratio for a while.

  • We recently picked up two new HTC One M7's for $300 each. Great phone, really happy with it.

While newer models migth be slightly better in terms of specs is it really worth the extra $$$? For most people I would say no, unless for example you take you mobile photography very seriously - in which case you should probably buy a proper camera. The M7 camera is perfectly good for snaps and video, captued some great footage at the NRL Grand Final last week.

    • Where did you get one for $300?

I've ordered mine two weeks ago from Yatango for $450, but was told that it was out of stock shortly after.

  • Not quite happy with my Z1 Compact's camera interface, not sure if the Z3 is any better.
HDR is pretty much the same as not turning it on, and the process of turning it on is a pain as well. (need to go to manual and then HDR, and can't do HDR if your resolution is over 8MP)

and not sure what the point is of the 20MP camera while AUTO only gives you 8MP and actually looks better than 20MP.

  • As some have stated, do look into the OnePlus One.
Some Australian resellers do offer local warranty as well.
Be sure to get CM11s running on it :)

The Xperia Z3 is actually out of the price range at $849 (16GB) outright, unless you're talking about the Z3 Compact.

If you need to stick to that budget I'd probably say G3 else, I think the better phone out of those would be the Z3. Newest out of them and has good battery and awesome camera

  • Not sure if this has been asked already, however what's the reason for upgrade? I would consider an s3 still a pretty decent phone, you could either wait for another price cycle/drop or you could get a newer phone in another 6-12 months.

    • Lost it last weekend.

    • Its not a bad phone, but there are plenty of reasons. Assuming its not the LTE version:
Bigger and higher res screen, 4g/LTE, more RAM, updated software and most importantly, considerably better battery life.
I have the LTE version here with 2GB of ram and its a pretty good device, but it has half the battery of this years phones and 720p with pentile isnt exactly amazing…

      • Fair enough, but personally only the battery life would be an issue for me, and if it hadn't deteriorated since purchase or could be fixed with a new battery that would be a preferred option over a 500 buck replacement and contributing to landfill.

Just letting you know it wasn't me who negged you btw

  • Vivo Xshot, best camera phone in the business right now. Warranty is the only worry…

  • One plus one! I'll have more invites shortly.

  • One plus One's seem to be available without the invites now?

    http://www.oppomart.com/oneplus-one.html/

    • Have been looking at this phone online for the last week but is it still worth it when it cost an extra $70-$100?

  • (Plus One)+1 for Oneplus One

  • Xperia z2 - essentially the z3 but cheaper :)
Pros: waterproof, dustproof, equal best camera, best battery, equal best design, cheapest(?) and no real cons.
If you want something bigger, the G3 has a bigger and better screen or the OPO if you can get it at the US price is cheaper.

  • Xperia Z2. I have one myself, now that the marginally-improved Z3 is out it will be even cheaper. It has an absolutely stunnning screen, that comes right up to the glass and looks like it's printed paper. Performance is snappy, Sony's skin is quite nice and the camera is ridiculously good. Design is so gorgeous, glass and metal are my favourite combo on phones. Speakers aren't quite up to HTC standard, but are still much better than anything else. Battery life is insane, battery is 3200mAh. No wireless charging, but magnetic charging which is just as cool and last but not least it's waterproof which is actually less gimmicky than you think.

Think this way… Why u want to spend more than 500 bucks for android and you cant even sell it half price 6 months from now. Im not an apple fanboy, just being honest and realistic… Buy something like 300 dollars max… Just my 2 cents.. Also think about the warranty.. How easy you can claim the warranty if something wrong with it… And how long the process would be… - my other 2cents…

    • But then again, you buy an iphone for $1000 and sell it for $500 in a year. That's $400 you'll never see again. Although if you buy a Htc One for $700, one year later it will be $400 and that's $300 you will never see again. Therefore, if you are using phones for a year, it would be better off to buy an android because you will lose $100 more if you use an iphone. However, this isn't the case with all androids, I bought my Nexus 5 for 450 in November, sold it for 350 after 10 months. that's like a 22% loss and people are still selling it for around 300-400 at the moment even though it came out in November last year which is still higher than 50%.

And how much does your andro to repair the screen if you drop it ? Or something wrong with it, where u gonna take it and how long does it take to repair it ? Do they have swap instore ? Or u have to wait to get it fixed ? Bought my 5s for 850, sold it for 530 :) bought iphone 6 for 1000, 2 hours later sell it for 1300, so i pay 30 bucks !!! Cover under warranty for 2 years. Easy swap, cheaper screen if damage…

        • This is in regards to the Nexus 5,

how much does your andro to repair the screen if you drop it ?

My Nexus 5 would cost $198 to replace with LG or around $100 if you do it yourself.

Or something wrong with it, where u gonna take it and how long does it take to repair it ?

I would I call google and then a RMA procedure would occur whereby I purchase a Nexus 5 from a link they provide, I get it within a few days, I send back the old one and get refunded; so I'm never phoneless. It's called delivery, don't know if your familiar with the term. And I have no clue how long it takes.

Do they have swap instore ? Or u have to wait to get it fixed ?

No because they're an online store. And yes you have to wait, but then again, you don't have to visit an apple store and you can do everything from home.

Bought my 5s for 850, sold it for 530 :) bought iphone 6 for 1000, 2 hours later sell it for 1300, so i pay 30 bucks !!! Cover under warranty for 2 years. Easy swap, cheaper screen if damageā€¦

$320 loss, compared to $100 loss on a Nexus 5. Do the maths. Yeah, if you could make $300 profit from 1 phone within 2 hours, I'm sure no one would be employed. Yeah same with the Nexus 5, 2 years warranty. A more complicated swap process, but has its pros and cons.

        • the 5S for $530 doesn't seem that good at all. HTC and Samsung android phones can do about the same or even better.

It really depends on what you want. Out of your suggestions, this is what I would suggest:

Go for the Sony and Samsung phones if non-necessities matter to you. For example, if you really need a good camera, then go for the Sony and Samsung, if you need the other gimmick features, go for Sony and Samsung. They both have lots of gimmick features, you might find them useful.

If you don't care for gimmick features, like me, then your best bet is the OnePlus One or the Nexus 6 (when it is released). Alternatively, you can just pick up a Nexus 5 for cheap now and it'll last you for a few years easily.

At the end of the day, it's too hard to make a suggestion because the phones you've listed are at quite different price points. My suggestion is if you just want a no BS phone, then go for the Nexus 6 when it's released.

Sony and Samsung are too gimmicky for me, try to cram in too many features. Sony has too many design issues (remember cracking screens?)…etc.

Thanks for the reply. I am going with the Nexus 6!

      • Good choice mls! Rumours say it will be announced in 2-3 days, so keep your eyes peeled :)

        • Does anyone know approximately how much the nexus 6 will be?
          Thanks!

        • @ps90:

          It starts at US$650.

  • Z3 compact ftw!!!!
