  • When did they stop accepting PayPal?

  • +4

Extended? Could it get any longer?

    • +10

Well, they have managed to make the shortest single book (The Hobbit novella) into a longer trilogy than these three epics combined…so yeah, they may be able to find some lost footage of Peter Jackson picking out errant navel lint to throw into a new super-mega-quadra-giga-zilogy edition at some point in time! ;)

      • +2

        Anything is possible!

There's now a copy of The Dark Crystal (1982) floating-around, uncut/extended. "Workprint". Picture quality is horrendous. But still interesting. They cut what they thought was too dusturbing for kids. LOL!

        • Cool, I just found a copy & downloading it to check it out, cheers! ;)

    • +3

      That's what she said.

  • You still have to change discs in the middle, though, right?

Like The Late Show/D-Generation on ABC in the late 80s - early 90s :D

"All right, look… There's only one Return, okay? And it ain't of the King, it's of the Jedi."

      :P

I kid… LOTR is the definition of EPIC. Any time someone tells me a movie is 10/10, I say "Dude… it's not LOTR"

  • Great price, thanks.

  • +3

Given that I'm a self confessed geek I'm sad to say I've come to the conclusion that Lord of the Rings just isn't for me. I just don't enjoy the films and I gave up a third of the way into the second book because I wasn't enjoying it. You aren't suppose to want the damn annoying hobbits and all the rest of the characters to die in the fiery pits of mordor shortly before 2nd breakfast.

    • Honestly, I'd persevere with the second book if I were you, it was definitely tough going for at least the first half, but after that it really hits its straps & you just can't put it down! It's around about this time that the character development of the hobbits really kicks in too, and you gradually begin to loathe them less. ;)

It is noteworthy that each of the 'books' was actually meant by Tolkien to be at least 2-3 separate volumes within itself, so you'll find significant differences in pacing within each 'book' as they are published…many people, myself included, consider the second half of TTT to be one of the most action-packed reads of all time! :)

That said, maybe it's also the genre…when you say "geek", do you mainly read/watch sci-fi, or are you a regular fantasy reader?

      • This is interesting. I am a MASSIVE LotR film fan (saw them when they came out, have watched the extended trilogy 8 or 10 times) but I also put The Two Towers book down half-way through and never came back to it. I read The Hobbit in the 90s and loved it, but the LotR books didn't hold me in the same way. There's just so much walking! I'm sure I'll give them a go again in the future.

NOTE: I generally love fantasy novels. Personal favourite is the Sword of Truth saga. Making my way through A Song of Ice and Fire now.

        • +1

You've probably read them, but I can also heartily recommend the Magician/Riftwar series by Raymond E. Feist…right up there with the better (earlier) of the SoT books (Terry G kind of went of the rails there for a while, but I've read reviews that suggest the latest couple of books are of a much better standard).

Pity they botched the Seeker TV series, talk about a missed opportunity…

        • +1

@StewBalls: I have not! I will put them on my list :) I tried very hard to like Legend of the Seeker - but the whole vibe was wrong. Plus the casting (aside from maybe Bridget Regan as Kahlan) was atrocious. And all those kiwis doing terrible American accents - aaargh! Every time I watch an episode of GoT I get sad/angry that SoT didn't get the same treatment. There's still hope! Maybe!

      • That said, maybe it's also the genre…when you say "geek", do you mainly read/watch sci-fi, or are you a regular fantasy reader?

I prefer sci-fi but don't mind fantasy so long as it's presented as such and don't mind a little fantasy sneaking into my sci-fi. I definitely don't expect realistic science.

I think it's the characters and story rather than the genre. I find the characters to be whiny and not heroic at all and the story a snooze fest.

        • I can understand where you're coming from…LOTR was definitely heavy going, it's a huge epic world that you really need to immerse yourself in, and TBH you don't really appreciate it fully until you've finished it completely & are actually reflecting on it. I had to come back to it a couple of times, once I had the requisite amount of time & patience to devote to it.

I find the characters to be whiny and not heroic at all and the story a snooze fest.

Once you have completed it, with the gift of retrospect you will truly appreciate just how far from the truth that comment is… ;)

Before you give it another go, I'd start with something a little lighter in the pure fantasy genre…maybe something (as noted) along the lines of Wizards First Rule (SoT) or Magician.

While the BDs are Region B (Australia/UK), the bonus discs are DVD region 2, which will not play on many Australian DVD players (though a lot are region free nowadays). Just something to be aware of.

  • Also just a note, if you actually want to receive this set with the outer box in good condition I'd reconsider. Zavvi will send this in a thin padded bag which offers no protection.

    • What about multiple box sets. Are they sent the same way or in a cardboard box?

      • They send everything individually in it's own padded bag.
During a sale last month I ordered 9 things on the same order and they shipped them all separately. Still only one shipping cost though.

        • +2

Ordered from Myer online. 14 items, 14 packages. Ha free shipping.

        • @smpantsonfire: So you can order Savvi items from myer website? Am confused.

  • I grabbed the same deal a month or two back. So cheap and you get a ton of discs. The DVDs are region 2, but work on our Blu-ray so it's all good. Currently working my way through the movies a couple of hours at a time… great post OP!

    • did it arrive in good condition, wasn't damaged at all?

  • It's such a shame the Special Features are only DVD.

  • Hey everyone I just bought it, I already have the extended edition Steelbook of the first film (waiting for the others to come out) so I wasnt gonna buy this but I gave in, with 88 likes I felt like it was a justified purchase and compared to the JB price of $115 im happy.

On a side note, lets try and get this deal to 100 votes.

Comes to about $29.90 delivered (with 'WELCOME' code and left in GBP for payment) if ordered via 28 Degrees Master Card. Great deal!!

    • Was wondering this as well is it better to buy in AUD or leave it in GBP and let the bank do the conversion? Also do they deliver to PO Box?

      • +1

        @g12345567
The difference isn't that bad with Zavvi from GBP to AUD (as you can see only about $2). However, 28 Degrees doesn't charge you any conversion fees so you save there if you just buy it in GBP with your 28 degrees card. Make sense?

      • How do you choose Zavvi AUD conversion? It's still showing up as pounds on the final order submit page for me.

        • At the top of the page. On the right hand side above the shopping cart and next to the country/flag.

        • Thanks

  • Just wondering if the extended editions are usually available on Netflix?

  • .
THANK YOU BenTheBargainer2013 for posting this post otherwise I would've missed it
I ordered the Box :) it was a great movie set and I look forward to seeing the extended editions on Blu-Ray

  • Arrived today, a little lightly packaged but zero damage. Thank you OP!
Now I can begin to educate all the people in my life that have never watched LOTR…

  • mine arrived today, I don't even like LOTR… just bought it cos its cheap :D It'll be a good present once I find someone who likes it and don't have a set

  • Lord of the Rings arrived last week. Superman anthology arrived today. They used the cheapest thinnest bubble padded lite mailer bag you can buy for packaging on both.

All the discs in perfect condition. Boxes didn't arrive in 100% perfect condition. Would rate the overall condition 94%. The did show a few dents on the corners of both box sets. This is my first time ordering from Zavvi. Probably won't buy again since they use very cheap thin packaging and product not arriving in 100% perfect condition.

Just wondering what condition everybody else's orders from Zavvi arrived in.

  • .
Mine arrived a week ago lightweight flimsy bubble wrap packing torn (by the boxset corner)
but everything ok, incredibly cheap deal considering it came airmail

Take the Boxset to Post Office and ask how much to send airmail to England I bet they quote a price
almost as much as we paid for the Blu-Ray LOTR Boxset …… Thank you ZAVVI
