Factory refurbished in a box, however 15days build time required? Why can't you just ship the box as soon as payment received?

    • +4

      That's a good question.

It is actually just a barebone in a box, we have done some pretesting. However we need to add all the components and recheck. Typically this can take as little as 7 business days and as long as 15 business days (if we have to order any part extra).

      • +1

so which part is refurbished, just the barebone? Will the other components be brand new or used?

        • +8

The barebone is refurbished. All other components are brand new. ( HDD , CPU, Memory, Wireless Card, DVD Drive, LCD Display, and in some cases even the motherboard are all brand new.)

        • +2

          @jackkel:

          and the battery?

  • +1

deleted (Logical beat me to the same question :-) )

  • +2

    Wow that's cheap

  • +1

How many hdd slots does this have? Can i drop the hdd and just place my own ssd on it?

    • +3

There is 1 2.5" HDD bay which hosts the 1TB Hybrid drive and 1x mSATA bay which is blank.

I would recommend putting in a nice 240GB Crucial mSATA in there or something.

You can possibly convert the DVD drive also to a hard disk bay but it would have to be a 7mm drive I believe.

      • +1

Will the BIOS let you install an OS on the mSATA and boot off it?

        • +2

          Hi, yes you sure can.

  • +1

    Nice that it also upgradeable.
but your Linked Web Page says 6 Cell battery not 8 Cell.

    • +1

      Thanks, fixed.

  • How much is a new one.

    • +2

The replacement model to this is the W550SU-1 which is $899.

  • +3

+ve vote for LogicalBlueOne - great retailer, great service, great waranty backup.

  • +2

This gets 7 hours on a Pre-haswell CPU? Even with an 8 cell battery I am a little skeptical. Anything to back it up?

Nothing else to fault so still gets a + from me.

    • +6

It's just what the manufacturer quotes for the configuration. To be perfectly honest, i'd half that for any REAL world usage. Not some best case scenario.

      • +1

That's what I expected. May be best to include the words "up to" 7 hours in the product description so people are aware its an optimistic figure.

        • Riczter: I agree with you that this statement of 7 hrs ( up to ), is very optimistic. Because most, if not all computer manufacturers and retailers are quoting maximum battery drain times, it would be hard for anyone else not to follow and survive in business. I also don't like any false claims such as these, but like most informed consumers try to get value on offer.

As you would know, these figure would be with everything turned off or on minimum, some even with computer sitting idle, which is not an average real use, only helps if you forget to put computer in sleep or hibernate mode. I have an older 13" Asus U31F also with an 8 cell battery, has Intel Core i5 480m 2.66GHz Processor, which is 1st Gen. and they originally quoted some sites up to 9hrs & 10hr+ on sticker on notebook ( 8 cell ) *Mobile Mark 2007 reader mode @ Super Hybrid Engine Battery Saving mode with 8cell 5600mAh battery , WLAN/BT turn off.

In real use I can get 4 to 8 hrs., more now with ssd. This is due to optimisation with the Super Hybrid Engine in motherboard. Iwould not be surprised if this model Horize was able to get 4 to 5 hrs on low settings.

        • +4

Hi Riczter, I agree with your statement so we changed the product description to match it.

        • @ozhunter68:

I have the same model. Been going almost 3 years now. Upgraded to an SSD, 8gb RAM and windows 8.1 pro, I think I sit at somewhere around 2-3 hours on max and 8 hours on most power saving settings (dimmed screen, restricted cpu performance etc). Back when I first got it though, I did actually get 10 hours use out of it on "balanced". Who knows, maybe some companies don't lie?

        • @ozhunter68:

Just clarify the above and in fairness to Horize, I did not say anyone is lying, but that they are quoting "optimistic" best case usage ( minimum ), sometimes realistic, often not.

Like I said, my U31F can get 8hrs+ usage, more if I was just reading files or word processing with wifi off and screen turned to minimum etc. I was super impressed three years ago when I used it, and now even more as I have bought a newer notebook and ultrabook with 3rd gen i3 and i5, W8.1 and ssd cache hhd and they still can't get close to the Asus U31F for both performance and stamina. The others are average or normal, Asus Super Hybrid Engine was ahead of it's time and up there with the best.

To be able to use a high performing notebook or ultrabook for 4, 5, 6, 7 or more hours is a very good result with today's technology, especially with a 15.4", even when power options are turned down.

  • Any idea what the HD 4000 could handle? Cs:go?

    • Dota

Most source games would also run fine.

    • +1

It's pretty bad in general, but it can run CS:GO on about stable 29fps with Medium Settings and 1280 x 720 Resolution. This thing is great EXCEPT for the Graphics Card. If you're looking to game, any device with an Intel HD4000 is worth it, go for one with some sort of dedicated graphics card. Preferably 2GB if not then just go with 1GB.

  • Rep you didn't have anything more high end on special did you? (Better CPU and GPU specifically?)

    • +1

yeah ive been waiting almost a year to buy, witing for the
      HORIZE W840SU-T
      or the
      HORIZE W550SU-1

      to drop on special.
If not for all the damn surgery I need constantly, I'd have just bought one of the damn things!!!!!

    • +1

We have the sister model to this, which is slightly thicker. But has dedicated GPU and same other spec, more or less.

      • Any specials on the W230SS? (Or something else similar?)

        • +1

They are still on special with the bonus mSATA upgrade, or the $100 extra to a 512GB SSD. We really can't go any lower on these.

        • @jackkel:

How much without the mSata upgrade?

        • @MasterScythe: I can probably get about $80 off if we were to remove it.

  • +7

Since we'are buying refurbished, why not spend $100 more for 4th generation i7, 16G memory, and a dedicated graphics card with 2G DDR3? Better hurrry though. And it has got windows 8.1 on it. (Although the battery life may not be as long, it'd suppose it's not that important since it's the high specs we're looking for)

That's pretty good! There are real deals on the Dell Outlet amongst the dreck every so often.

Really this and OP's deal are both solid value.

Dell Inspiron laptops have so-so build quality as well. Something to take into account. Their Latitude, XPS and Vostro series are great, but their Inspiron series are mainstream rubbish sometimes.

        • Yeah true. Clevo and friends aren't exactly built like a bank vault either but should give you a few years life.

        • @Merlict:

Do you know which country ha the cheapest clevo's?

        • @MasterScythe:
America is a lot cheaper, check http://www.xoticpc.com/custom-gaming-laptops-notebooks-clevo… for example

.. but with the shitty exchange rate, GST (since most good configs are north of $1000), warranty issues etc.. I think I'd buy locally. Don't forget the cost of a shipping forwarder too.

    • Good deal, but the problem glossy display on the Dell.

I am going to overlook the fact that you literally scrolled right past someone who posted a similar comment at the top of the page, to come all the way down to the bottom to post your reply. Now how exactly are you going to do that? It takes us 48 hours to test memory, properly. In the system. If there is a failure, which does happen as memory is extremely volatile it could possibly take another 48 hours. If you order a part that we don't have in stock, which is possible, it may take a few days to come in. Then we test that part with the rest of the system. We run a CPU benchmark for 24 hours on each system we build and we do a stress test which goes through every single component of our systems, speakers, network, dvd drive, everything to test every single part to ensure hopefully that when you receive your brand new machine that there is no issues with it. The stress test if done properly will take around 4 days to complete to make sure there is no actual faults. Surprise that faults don't actually present themselves the first time so we battery the machine until we are confident that it will arrive to you right.

My company doesn't get a reputation for shoving out crap to people to have them have issue after issue. We are proactive in making sure that from when you order your machine which is custom made to your requirements that it will arrive to you in good order and the whole point of the testing is so that you have a trouble free experience for many years to come. I want to see you back in 4 years to buy your next machine because it was so great. Of course issues with machines can and do happen, we try to mitigate this as much as possible to both save us money in the long run and to give you a good experience.

Now I hope that you can consume your beverage in peace now.

Good response, rep. Next time I need a new laptop I will keep you guys in mind for quality and service.

        • +3

I can vouch for both quality and service of LBO :)

I purchased a P170HM model from Jack about 3 years ago and it's still going strong. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase my next 'big rig' from them.

    • +7

Complaining about them actually testing units rather than just sending out crap and letting you deal with it.
      Really?

  • +1

I suggest that chap go work for dell, he would fit right. In. Lol

  • seems great, but the operating system is putting me off, never heard of it

    • +7

You live under a rock if you've never heard of Linux or Ubuntu. Explained in simple english here

It's a free operating system and they've only put it there as a placeholder, you can obviously overwrite it with your choice of OS later on.

    • and they also have a paid option of adding windows if you have no clue on how to install windows….

  • The W840SN I got from LBO earlier in the year is going great. ;)

Keyboard is a bit awkward (key presses only register if pushing on the center of the key, forget the corners), can't fault it anywhere else.

  • jackkel have you got the dimensions of the laptop? and maybe some photos of the ports and power plug?

    thanks,

  • +1

I have this laptop with a i7, great laptop. I love the display but I cannot get more then 2.4h with the i7. I would however not advertise that it comes with Ubuntu on it.

I had the following problems in Ubuntu:
    1) After the first update the wireless card stops working and it does not work properly in any Ubuntu I have tried. I did stop testing at 13.10. I bought another wireless card after a while.
    2) I never managed to get the webcam working on any Ubuntu whatsoever, it is not recognized but I did not spend too much time trying to make it work.

The support was great however it did not manage to get the wireless working.

I personally got it with a 128 mSata option and added a 500GB in the empty slot.

    • +2

      Hi,

The RTL8723AE is a known issue with Ubuntu, and it is unfortunately a very common wireless card.

There is a patch available, if you PM me I can link you to it. The update would have overwritten the original patch.

Secondly I am not sure about the webcam, it works on ours here. Have you ensured it is enabled FN + F10 ?

  • Hi Rep, can I just clarify you are willing to sell for $619 without the mSATA?

    • +1

      Hi,

No this machine does not have mSATA. It has a hybrid drive.

We can do it for $649 with no hard disk.

The other question was relating to a different model.

  • How do I omit the HDD so that the price is $649?

    • Please contact our customer service team by clicking on the contact us link on the website. We will be able to help with that.

      Thanks.
