If you hire a car for a few days you could see some of the California countryside, which I find more interesting than major cities. I love a US road trip - the fuel is cheap, the country is interesting, and you get to interact with random people wherever you stop, though I usually go in summer when the weather is warmer.
Due to the winter, you can't guarantee seeing Sequoia National Forest - it's very weather dependent at that time of year, and only the lower elevation roads are open. However, you could easily do a loop around LA over 3-5 days, sightseeing in a few random places including:
Bakersfield - home of the world's tallest thermometer (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2893)
Tehachapi Wind Farm area (Joe Hockey would freak out about the thousands of wind turbines in this area - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tehachapi_Pass_Wind_Farm)
Tehachapi train loop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tehachapi_Loop)
Joshua Tree National Park (https://www.flickr.com/photos/JoshuaTreeNP/collections)
You could take in San Diego and Santa Monica as well, depending on how much you want to drive, and how much you'd prefer to hang out with the crowds on Hollywood Blvd.
Public transport is quite cheap, and the subway is handy, but I recommend a car in LA if you want to go shopping if you're staying downtown because the major shopping centres are nowhere near the Chinese Theatre.
