Nexus 6/X thoughts?

An exclusive came out today and the new Nexus 6/X apparently has these features:

Specs:
5.92 QHD - 2560 x 1440 - 498 PPI
3,200 mAh
13 Megapixels (4K UHD) - 2 MP front facing camera
Snapdragon 805 - 2.6GHz quad-core
3 GB of RAM
32 GB internal storage
Android L

Personally, I hate it. It's way too big and is pretty much a Moto X (2nd gen), but is faster, bigger battery (but then again 2k display), and a MUCH bigger screen!! What are your thoughts?

Buggeroo, still rocking the iPhone 4 and had been eye-balling the Nexus 5 and really keen on the 6/X. If the spec has any solid substance then the only reason I'll pass is screen size.

  • +1

I'm really hoping this is actually the rumoured Moto S phablet and not the next Nexus. Hate it, hate it, hate it.

Don't know about you guys… but i think i just heard apple running to see their lawyers to find ways to sue google/motorola…

First impression was that it was an iphone…

    • Not sure if serious, but it's like every phone looks like an iphone…

    • +2

First impression was that it was an iphone…

…Really? I see zero resemblance whatsoever.

  • +1

Nearly 6 inches. Good luck fitting that into jeans pocket.

    • +1

There's a possibility of a smaller 5.2inch Nexus as well. Since Google likes onscreen buttons, it shouldn't have big bezels like the iphone.

      • +2

I really really really hope they do come up with a 5.2inch version, otherwise I'll be moving to a different phone.

    • +1

Nearly 6 inches. Good luck fitting that into jeans pocket.

Most men can fit a 6+ inch object into their skinny jeans. How does nature does it?

      • those are bendable mate… is this?

        • maybe they can invent a phone that expands?

        • +1

          IPhone 6 is…

  • +2

Too big. I reckon the Nexus 5's dimensions are the sweet spot already.

    • +1. My nexus 5 feels normal now but it felt largish after my previous phone which had a 4.3 inch screen (Motorola Matrix). But this nexus 6 is a much larger jump up in size and also takes a severe hit on the practicality side of things. But I would probably submit to new toy syndrome and work around the size thing if it was around the $450 to $500 mark… Which it ain't.

Nexus 5 will get Android lollipop soon and I might get off my butt and replace my cracked screen and housing sometime…. Her pesto a 'new' phone….

  • 5.92" is way too small for QHD. I wish they would keep it at FHD. I mean the battery life and performance hit from running a QHD screen is not worth the extra resolution.

  • +1

Why don't they make it bigger? 6.5" but reduce the side bezel. I love big screen phones.

    • I love tablets.

      FTFY.

    • +1

42" Soniq could work well too.

  • I hope it's made by LG, and I hope they make it like how they made the G2.

    i.e. have a 5.2'' screen, in a body that's normally made for 4.7'' screens.

…because frankly, a 6' screen would be HUGE if it were made by say, Sony or HTC.

ALso I hope the camera is actually good, and can compete with the Galaxy S5.

ALso I hope it has multi-window, like Samsung's… but i really doubt this. I mean, it's a huge screen; why not do two things?? Come on Google (and other oems besides Samsung and LG!)

    • +1

It's Moto, if you've clicked the article.

  • +3

I need that damn large screen so I can get out of this Note bandwagon. As much as I love the Note series, I dislike Samsung bloatware and system locks and delay in releasing updates. :|

    • How do you use such a big phone though? When I use my Nexus 5, I cannot reach the top left corner of the screen.

      • +2

Note 3 has a nice feature which snaps the whole screen into a small window and you can access everything with 1 hand. :)
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGB2yDEjwnk

Reading emails, editing documents/powerpoints/excel sheets, checking various websites all the time, jotting down numbers/notes etc. I heavily rely on these features for my profession. Plus now am used to the large screen reading. Simply can't go back to a small screen reading scrolling around everywhere. :)

        • Another issue is the grip.. When I hold the iPhone 5, I have an extremely tight grip and it will literally never fall. With the Nexus 5, I cant reach my hand enough to wrap around the left hand side so I don't have as much grip.. With the Nexus 6 I can imagine not even seeing my hand…

        • +1

          @18:
Never had a problem with grip. I guess this will depend on the person's physical size. I can hold the Note 3 (and all other previous Notes) and they all fit within my palm, with the fingers go around it. But my Mrs isn't comfortable with a big phone like the Note. My mom however loves her Note 1 because of the large screen and text size.

  • Apparentally its the Moto S.
    http://www.gforgames.com/gadgets/moto-s-surfaces-compared-2n…
    I really hope it is. I want a <5.5inch Nexus 6

  • well at least they finnaly improved the camera, still no micro sd slot… apart from screen size, my G3 seems to be better and I have it now..

  • +1
  • According to GSMARENA rumour mill- it should be 5.2 screens
    http://m.gsmarena.com/motorola_nexus_6-6604.php

However if Google releases the bigger 5.9 inch version, I believe it will be similar size like oneplus one -(considering Nexus devices use on screen buttons, so slim bazel)

  • Sweet spot for me, having that size it would probably fit in my pocket more comfortably than a 6.4" phablet. And less worried about it breaking

  • The phone was spotted on a daily commute.
    http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/10/01/this-guy-seems-to-be…
    Doesn't look that big imo.

  • Yeah, I probably won't be getting one if this is true. I'm hoping they'll re-release a Nexus 5 (2014), but Android Police doesn't think it likely. I understand Google's reasoning behind the shift, since larger, high-res phones need developer attention, but it's still a shame. Like we didn't have enough problems with the flagship size creep already.

I'm not a fan of any other alternatives at the moment (Xperia Z3 is good, but becomes outdated too quickly, and the Galaxy Alpha has a few too many cons for me to consider it fully), so it looks like I'll be sticking with my N5 until next year. I'm curious to see how OEM's skins mesh with Android L and the new Material Design, so that only makes it easier to wait before jumping ship.

  • +1

A lot of the rumours are pointing at tomorrow… really hoping its true.

    • +1

The thought of 5.9" scares me but I don't think it will affect my impulse purchase of it

      • im with you man hahahaha

        • Front facing speakers and a 1440p display would be enough!

  • Reports of releasing it at 4-5am AEST. This would be the exact same as when the Nexus 5 was announced.
    Countdown: https://countingdownto.com/countdown/nexus-6-countdown-clock

    • How quick would it sell out?

      • Not quick this time judging by the price. I was expecting it to cost a bit more than the N5, but not that much of an increase. lol

  • info up on Google Site: http://www.google.com/intl/all/nexus/
    Nexus 6
    5.96” 1440x2560 display (493 ppi)
"Available for pre-order starting in late October."

Also Nexus 9 and Nexus Player

  • And $649 US Outright!
    http://www.theverge.com/2014/10/15/6982145/nexus-6-announced…

    How disappointing.

    • +1

In Australia if we follow previous trends that means add 100 and another 20 for shipping = $770. I'm outta here!

      • It wouldn't surprise me if its $799 for us Aussies. Factor in gst, it's still works out cheaper than what American's that live in states with 10% sales tax would be paying at current exchange rates (I know that google pricing isn't worked out at the current exchange rate). How often do we get a better deal than Americans on phones?

    • I feel as though that is justified, the specs and features are fantastic, also 32GB is now the base model.

      • dual front facing speakers
      • fast charging (6 hours battery in 15 mins)
      • big battery
      • 13 MP Camera
      • Crazy 1440p display
      • Metal band for higher end feel
      • …….

      Just to name a few!

size comparison with Nexus 5 and iPhone 6+

  • Price and size is a bit too much for me. What else is there in a 5 - 5.5 inch? Anyway to get Moto X (2014) in Aus?

    • On-shipper like comGateway would get it here. Just factor an extra $30 or so onto shipping. (Although if you have a .edu email address you can get $50 off).
Another optiong could be OnePlus One. I just ordered one of them.

      • Looking at the OnePlus One also. Where did you buy yours from? Cheapest I've seen $415 (16GB) on ebay.

        • Got and invite from the whirlpool forum (within less than an hour).

        • Just did it and got an invite within minutes. Should have looked at the AUD first. $363US became $430AU plus another $30 for Comgateway.

        • @wonderboy: yeah, I know what you mean, it keeps added up. Still a good phone for <$500 though. I added a couple of amazon purchases to my comgateway order to make me feel better about the shipping. :)

  • the price is a joke…..

  • Price is up there with some other premium phones but it is a HUGE leap over the Nex5 a year ago.
I still fancy a OnePlus but until they sort out their marketing here in Aus I am keeping my Nex5. I will be interested to see how quickly they roll out the L update.
One the other hand, if the Nex9 is reasonably priced…

  • Price is disappointing, but really the size is absurd. THey should have released an udpdated Nexus 5 as well with better battery life and better camera. Maybe time for an Xperia or a One PLus One?

    • Android L improves the battery life on the Nexus 5 and I wouldn't be surprised if there are software improvements to the camera.

  • +3

The starting price is okay at $700, if it drops down to say $500 for a grey import in a few months like other android flaship phones tend to do. $500 is my limit on a new device, especially when typically these phones lose around half their starting retail price within 6 months. If I buy today at $500 and its only worth $250 in 12 months time, then its not such a huge loss. While it's at $800, even if its worth $300 12 months time, that's $500 loss within 12 months. Rather get an iPhone at that rate, since they'll work out cheaper in the longrun.

    • So good.

  • +3

I agree that the price is completely justifiable. The specs are crazy. Unfortunately, it's just too big IMO.

    • +1

Something ideal would be between N5 and N6: Same spec as Nexus5 with bigger battery and 3gb ram and 5.2" screen. Perfecto!

  • +1

    Screen + price = bye bye N6

  • MKBHD has never been so excited!

    Nexus 6 & Nexus 9 Impressions!: http://youtu.be/iTLp2F4dm4I

  • 5.5 inches as my oneplus one is the max that a phone should have, in my opinion. And yah, 4k screen is not so worthy for a phone :(. Waiting for android L update for my nexus 5

  • +4

Regarding to the price of Nexus 6, I think we have all been spoiled by LG over the last 2 Nexus phones. Personally I spent $700+ for the HTC made Nexus One back in early 2010. Very first Samsung-made Nexus S deal here — $599 for 16GB unlocked Aussie stock back in April 2011, consider Nexus S is not much better spec-wise comparing to Nexus One. Then Samsung-made Galaxy Nexus deal from DWI soon after the launch — $725 for a grey-imported.

So it could be just LG that has been subsidising their Nexus phones. However the price of Nexus 4/5 didn't drop much either whereas Galaxy Nexus was less than 1/2 price a year after release.

    • +1

      LG, or Google subsiding?
      An interesting case study.

      • The price of the G2 with better specs wasn't that much higher in costs. I always thought google was selling at cost, but then the 1+1 was announced with better specs which should have meant it cost more to make but ended up being cheaper than the nexus 5. Go figure!

        • OnePlus One has worse customer service, was released a few months after the Nexus 5, made by a company that had little to none reputation/popularity, made in China (Nexus 5 was made in Korea)

  • +4

How can people expect a phone of this caliber to cost $350/$400?

    • My thoughts exactly. It pretty much fixes the main problem I had with the Moto X (2014), the battery life is actually decent and will probs last a day now. Screen res is not anything of particular importance to me, but I've never seen a QHD display on 5.9" so we'll have to wait and see.

I'm also confused as to our continual bump up in processors and GPU's - not sure what the day to day implications of that really are. More games and multitasking? Hoping it unlocks more potential than just jacking up benchmark scores.

It's also listed as water-resistant apparently. But can't see any IP ratings as of yet. But yeh, I think I can wait a while to pick up a grey import for a close-to or sub $500 tag. OnePlus and Z3 are good contenders though, just not a fan of Sony's UI; and CM11 out of the box is always a plus.

    • It looks great on paper but without reviews its hard to judge. Saw some early pics from the camera and they looked crap, all grainy. People have come to expect midrange price with cutting edge specs from nexus devices. At $750 plus its going to have to be good in all areas.

      • Yeh the Moto X camera was nothing to rave about iirc. Unless Google can pull out some magic from software improvements I'm not really expecting too much from it. But if the battery can last 1-2 days and 805 with the new GPU show some usefulness that might be enough to justify the $300 price difference between the One Plus (and the screen res if you're into that stuff).

  • Nexus 9 is now on the AUS Play Store! Looks like the Australia tax didn't hit us too hard this time. $479 for base model (16GB WiFi), LTE model "coming soon".

    • Been up for a while, Amazon is cheaper!

      • Ah nice haha didn't notice that, although still out of my price range sadly.
