    Damn that's cheap, next cheapest S1185 on staticice is $990 plus shipping!

    • +3

      Dang! At this price it's really giving the SP3 a run for it's money.

      • +1

        except its an older processor

        the most important aspect of a Wintab is the battery life vs Power

        also this doesnt have the stylus

        also this is thicker

        so its a poor man's surface

        Your alternative is to get a cheap SP2
        which i think is a better deal

  • +3

    Thats so tempting :( this or surface pro 3 ?
    Decisions Decisions… damn you ozbargain

    • Does the surface justify the price difference in your eyes?

    • +1

      I'm in the same boat. Considering the price I would have to say that this deal smashes the SP3 deals (it's just the display that's significantly better no? the other internals are roughly the same? No stylus though with the gigabyte which could be a dealbreaker), but I need to do more research into the matter.

        • Found this also.

          "Entry-level. The entry level Surface Pro 3 model offers a dual-core Intel Core i3 4200Y processor with Intel HD Graphics 4200. It offers a clock speed of 1.3 GHz.

          Mid-level. The two mid-level Surface Pro 3 models both offer the same dual-core Intel Core i5-4300U processor with Intel HD Graphics 4400. It offers a base speed of 1.6 GHz with Turbo Boost speeds of up to 2.9 GHz.

          High-end. The two high-end Surface Pro 3 models both offer the same Intel Core i7-4650U processor with with Intel HD Graphics 5000. It offers a base speed of 1.7 GHz with Turbo Boost speeds of up to 3.3 GHz."

          VS the HD4000 in the Gigabyte

          Surface Pro 3 i5/128 : Better screen, better CPU & GPU and lighter/slimmer :)
          GB S1185: Its cheaaaaaaaaaaaap

        • :) more info the better

      • +1

        well surface pro 3 is miles better than this, this only has 3rd gen intel core processors. 4th gen is a lot more battery efficent. And also surface pro 3 has alot more unique features such as the really great pen input and the lighter weight (< 1kg)

    • +2

      @amir aljaberi

      The decision is very clear. Free Shipping :D

      • OP, why only the pro is detachable ? From photos, both seems detachable.

        • +1

          @amir aljaberi

          Both models come with the detachable keyboard!

          DR

  • So tempting. If not sold out soon I will have to go for it

  • Hi Rep ( or anyone else with facts ), do one or both of these come as a package with the keyboard?
    Does only the Pro model have the "detachable magnetic feature for keyboard" or they both do?
    Any idea on battery life, as this is 3rd gen and not Haswell?
    For this price, this looks like a great compromise and good value.

    • +1

      +1 to the keyboard question. Asking because it does not specifically say anything about keyboard (whether included or excluded) in the specs.

    • +3

      @ozhunter68

      They both come with the "detachable keyboard" from my knowledge so far.

      Regards,

      DR

      • +1

        Thanks for reply. Although battery life is not too good, the performance of this tab should be really good with a faster processor than SP3 ( as long as cooling works well and CPU is not throttled too much like the SP2 was ) and the proper ssd Crusial M4.
        This is very tempting with the keyboard included.

      • Hi Rep,

        Could you confirm that these come with the detachable keyboard? I will purchase one if they do, but I can't rely on 'knowledge so far' as being 100% confirmation that these will come with the keyboard pictured.

        Thanks.

        • +2

          @c0balt

          I can confirm that both models come with the detachable keyboard. I hope that helps! :)

          DR

        • @DavidRJW: Thanks Rep. Pity the keyboard does not appear to be backlit?

  • Hi Rep - If I order today, will it get to me in Melbourne 3000 by next Wednesday? I'm off to NZ on Thursday and keen to claim GST back.

    • @kingsville

      Yes, that shouldn't be any problem.

      DR

  • Being an i5 CPU, I'm guessing battery life is similar to SP2/SP3 at around 3-5hrs?

    • +1

      Battery is less than 3 hours according to this:
      http://www.avforums.com/review/gigabyte-s1185-tablet-review.…

      • +1

        Wow thats poor. Doesn't cut it for todays standards.

      • +1

        @amir aljaberi

        This should be able to achieve anywhere from 3-5 hours on average give or take what you're doing on the tablet at the time.

        DR

      • Really good and fair review. The battery test they used was with brightness high, so could get a lot more if surfing the web on 50% brightness or lower.

      • +1

        Oh thank god. I just got an Asus T100 64/500GB for ~$470 in the ebay 15% thing and was having a sinking feeling that I didn't wait for the right bargain.

        But the battery life makes a huge difference in a tablet/ultrabook hybrid. Phew.

  • +1

    Decent specs and it's a Padbook. Always wanted one thanks OP

    • @jaero115

      You're most welcome! :)

  • +3

    Ivy bridge (3rd gen) so it won't come with the massive battery life improvements of Haswell (4th gen).

    For those of you guys asking about this vs surface pro 3, expect the Surface pro 3 to have double or more the battery life.

    • +1

      @raven2000

      The 4th Gen and 3rd Gen battery life improvements is nowhere near double especially for these tablet sized CPU's. A lot of other improvements will also need to be factored in to even reach anywhere close to double or more the battery life in comparison with the Surface Pro 3.

      DR

    • :) good price

  • +2

    This is pretty cool. I'm guessing this is a full version of W8 Pro which any software can be installed on?

  • +7

    Holy cow that's cheap I can buy 2 of these for the price of 1 iphone

    • +3

      You shouldn't have said that! Now all the apple freaks will start explaining why an iPhone is better than two of those tabs

      • +3

        NO they won't, I think they're still busy queuing at the apple store atm

        • but it doesnt bend like the new iphone :(

        • +1

          Is that a new iPhone feature like the LG?

        • Another feature not even apple knew about at release day

        • So, it is a screw up? I am sure Apple CEO will tell you that you should not bend the phone or you need to hold it in certain way so that it will not bend.

        • +3

          Guys I think we've side tracked. Sorry I DID mention iphone, my bad.

  • +1

    One of the bonuses is that it can take a Sim card module which is about $100.-

  • +1

    if only I could sell my sp2 right now lol.

  • Hi Rep,

    Is it free upgrade to Win 8.1?

    Thanks

  • +1

    For what it's worth Aldi have a similar product to be sold ($549) from October 4th. Celeron N2940 (I think), 64GB + 500GB, 4gb ram, 11.x" 1080p screen, 10hour battery life. Battery life is claimed based on the 2 included batteries which I assume means on in the tablet part and one in the keyboard part.

    Specs aren't on their website yet (and no model number was given) was in their latest brochure. Perhaps an option for those who would rather more battery over performance.

    I think however this J&W deal is the better of the two.

    • I think however this J&W deal is the better of the two.

      Celeron vs I5

      You think?

      • +1

        Not everyone needs an i5. I only added that line because I knew somebody would get their knickers in a knot about comparing Celerons with i5s. I guess there's no avoiding that.

        I would rather the Celeron processor in a tablet. Less heat, better battery life, performance that is more than adequate for tablet tasks.

        • +7

          I think 'Celeron' is still a dirty word to a lot of people.

  • Is this better than the original surface pro? (the $549 one)

  • Just pushed the button on the $699 unit, as with Win 8 Pro will fit nicely onto my work domain. Rep - I need to go to Melbourne on Saturday until mid next week and this would be great to take - any chance of a delivery by Friday (Dee Why)?!

    1.5 hrs Battery life totally kills this deal, shame as the price is awesome. Load would probably be equivalent to playing some Windows Store games. "Daddy, it's flat again".

    • @giggles

      Not sure were you've come up with 1.5hrs which more then likely is on HIGH display settings or even a movie and video being played.

      As a standard for general web browsing and general use, you should be able to achieve anywhere from 3-5 hours on average.

      DR

      • -2

        quoting MasterScythe above:

        From notebookcheck

        Battery Runtime

        Idle (without WLAN, min brightness)
        5h 25min

        WiFi Surfing
        3h 19min

        Load (maximum brightness)
        1h 37min

        you won't get 4 or even 5 hours websurfing unless you use an external monitor, lol.

        • Yeah - you're quoting the wrong value.

          As it is an i5 - nothing besides hardcore gaming (something this isn't marketed to) or hardcore rendering (again something this isn't marketed to) can get close to synthetic benchmarks, which is what 'Load' means. Not running a Windows app store app (unless it was really poorly coded or had very high system requirements)

          You should be looking at the other two values and then doing an average between them if you want a real world usage time which is close to the 4 hours quoted.

        • @c0balt:
          Anything less than 7 hours for a product that represents a tablet is a JOKE.

          Why else would these be so cheap? If they even had 50% more battery (more like they need 200%) it MAY be worth considering. Otherwise it will be a BRICK/DOORSTOP it no time.

        • +3

          @giggles:

          Yeah there's one joke here mate, and it's the one who thinks anything less than 8 hours isn't up to standard for an ultrabook.

        • -2

          @c0balt:

          I said TABLET, if you could read.

          goodbye, weakest link.

        • @giggles:

          But it isnt a tablet, its an ultrabook…

          Weakest link? Really? That's your response? An ancient catchphrase that's lamented? You must have got burned really hard to have kneejerked that. How sad a display you just made of yourself. Ouch!

        • +1

          @giggles: sooo would you mind naming another tablet running a ulv ivy chip that has battery life rivaling that of an arm/atom? AFAIK everything not running a haswell/atom or has somesort of battery in a keyboard wont stretch past 6 hours, so by your deduction 90% of the x64 tablet market are just doorstops?

          You need to learn the limitations of an x64 based unit vs an arm based before having a fit.

  • +1

    its a good price but its misleading to compare it with SP3, due to different generation cpus.

    • +1

      @SpaceNinja

      I totally agree. The SP3 might have thew new generation cpu, but we're are not claiming this to be a replacement but merely an alternative.

      DR

  • Where is the surface pro link people are talking about?

  • Just pulled the trigger on 128 GB model.

    Paid by credit card instead of PAYPAL - just thinking it would save the seller some fees but the website goes through an order verification which requests a confirmation of a smaller charge to the credit card before order proceeds. A bit of a nuisance as now I have to chase up the credit card company by phone to get the amount. (It hasn't gone through bank website yet).

    So pay by paypal folks.

    Planning to use this as a travel ultrabook (well maybe an ultra lite and fast notebook) for short bursts use or in hotels when I can connect to mains. At home, planning to connect to a 24" screen, power and wireless keyboard mouse so short battery life is not going to be a major issue - have 2 IPADs anyway for general web browsing.

    Only other time when it may be running on battery would be when my wife will be using it to watch FLASH based catch up TV shows which IPADs can't access and older machines seem to struggle with dropped frames.

    Cheers.

  • +1

    No digitizer forget it

  • How well will this work running Lightroom and capturing photos tethered at a shoot.

  • Excellent! Snapped one up, thanks OP! Whats the estimated eta for Brisbane?

  • +1

    Got the Pro for the 'rents. Better bargain for them with travelling and TRS scheme. Extra 10% off.

    BTW if the Rep is the David (looking at the username) that I spoke to on the phone regarding the invoice, thanks mate.

    Great customer service and communication on your part!
