Keep 3G or upgrade to 4G?

Hey guys.

I recently bought an S5 on a recent deal to replace my aging iPhone 4 and am now looking at going 4G.

Currently on Woolworths prepaid paying ~$26 per 45 days for 5gb + $500. Roughly $17 a month and unused data rolls on up to 15gb. Pretty happy so far but now that I have a more capable phone would it be worth paying a lot more per month for the 4G? Any good 4g prepaid offers out there?

Cheers, Dom

  • I am really happy with the Exetel $20/month 500mb 4G plan. Having said that, depending on your location you won't always get 4G and it'd be a waste of money. But I really like 4G when I have it, it's really convenient and significant;y faster

Frankly, you'd be nuts to forgo that plan, especially given the data-rollover you indicate you're getting. I was unaware of that aspect of the grandfathered Woolies/Optus plan.

Do you watch any YouTube on mobile, or do you think you might in the future? As of now, can you watch same, or other streamed-video, in a tolerable resolution without incessant buffering completely destroying your will to live?

If so, consider the double-edged sword of (the much, much, smaller allowance of) the 4G data you'll be getting, away from your data-rich (for the money) current plan.
    The specific-to-video, double-edged sword…

Yes, you can watch in a higher resolution. Yes, YT allowing, buffering time will be greatly reduced, BUT, if you're anything like me, you'll get 30 seconds or a minute into many videos much longer than that, and then decide to move on and watch something else.

On 4G, in that first 30 seconds or a minute, much video data will have buffered and disappeared from your allowance. Zip. Gone.

    Otherwise, 4G speed is great.
No difference in voice-quality, because in Australia, thus far, all voice is carried on the existing 2G and 3G networks.

I agree with Tas, a lot of people would be very happy to be on what you have managed to keep with the Woolworths plan! Unless you need the faster speeds or want a different provider I'd stick with it for as long as you can

  • Cheers guys. I might stick with my current Woolies prepaid then. TBH I didn't really have an issue with the speed of 3G on my iphone with what I was using it for, although perhaps with a larger display on the android I'll want better quality video streams.

If you do, just factor in the best part of 100MB of usage per video - average length videos, mix of 720p and 1080 resolutions.

On 4G, even people who think they have plenty of data can get caught-out very easily.

  • thats so ridiculously cheap..

    • It was cheaper when it was still available instore. I once stocked up when recharges worked out to be around $22 ($14.65 p/m). No wonder optus canned it!

  • I am on the same plan, and wish I had 4G but the savings are just too much! The next "closest" alternative I think would be Jeenee mobile $35 a month vs $17 per month for woolies mobile, over a year that comes to $216!
I am not budging off this plan till Optus kicks us off!
