Ice Cream Cake (the real thing)

Paid $16 for an "ice cream cake" from one of the more popular brands. Very disappointed to find out that it is all ice cream and no cake. $16 for 1.5 L of ice cream! Ice cream shaped like a cake is more like it.

Any recommendations on a proper ice cream cake?

On a side note: So I contacted this company and got a call from a lady, sounded like an elderly lady with a European accent. We had a discussion on this ice cream cake. She said what do I expect? I said where's the cake? She sounded a bit rude to be honest. Asked her to send a written reply to my query. Anyway, after that conversation, never got a response. Though the last two times I went to the shops, I haven't seen the product in question.

Who the hell expects there to be cake in an ice cream cake? I think that's a bit weird

    • +1

its a cake made of icecream…

you should expect that EVERYTHING THAT HAS FLOUR in a normal cake , is REPLACED by icecream.
      hence no cake.

hahahaha this is hilarious, "where's my cake!?".
I can imagine this guy having a carrot cake and saying the same thing.

  • ice cream cake is all ice cream

some places like Adriano(at star city and Roselle)(cake/dessert places) had ice cream like cakes (more cake than ice cream)

    Looks like the cake..

    Was just a lie.

Also despite what you think a cake should be, cakes don't have to be made of flour, we have cheesecakes and mousse cakes that contain very little actual cake flour and are made of mostly dairy such as cheese, buttercream or mousse.

    • You beat me to it!!

But on cakes, I occasionally make this decadent flourless chocolate cake… That contains…. no flour…

      • I do that too. I make a chocolate mug cake that's cooked in a microwave, and substitute flour with coconut flour or almond meal. It's delish and low carb.

  • The cake is a lie

  • What did you expect an ice cream cake to be?

I find this the most amusing part:

We had a discussion on this ice cream cake. She said what do I expect? I said where's the cake? She sounded a bit rude to be honest.

    LOL.

Tbh, normal floury cake encased in ice cream (as the one you dream of) sounds kinda horrible. They'd have to get the ratios right for it to be a pleasant textural experience - but then, all I'm imagining is a huge ice cream sandwich cake. mmm

OP, if you're still keen on something that'll satisfy your odd cravings, try this thing a mate and I made years ago when desperate for some ice cream sandwiches (we were too drunk to drive to the shops): You'll need a pack of Baker's Delight scones, preferably chocolate. Slice scone in half as if it's a bread roll that you wanna make a sandwich out of. Layer one half with your ice cream of choice (we used plain vanilla), and be generous - think Maxibon ratios. Place other half of scone on top. Smoosh down on the sandwich to compress the scone slices (again, kinda like Maxibon biscuits, more dense rather than cakey scones). You could skip the compressing part if you want a more cakey scone texture.

    Shove in your mouth, enjoy.

P.S. Google image search "ice cream cake". Note how they're all made out of nothing but ice cream :P

  • Wow! Some comments are… ignorance is not bliss, here you go http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_cream_cake

An Ice cream cake consists of a cake that incorporates ice cream. A popular form is a three-layer cake, with a layer of ice cream between two layers of cake.

A layer of ice cream between two layers of CAKE. Looks like the smart commenters here have never seen the real thing

Very convenient, did you write that Wikipedia entry? A google search shows both varieties so I don't think you can say either one is "the real thing", perhaps just different varieties. I have eaten many an ice cream cake in my time but I have never seen one made with any sort of sponge.

Totally feel your pain though. bought an Apple iPhone the other day, there's no apples in it at all!

    • Why not just either make or buy a cake and line it with icecream of your choice? I love golden syrup dumplings, but I don't go around telling companies that's not how you make it after paying for some to be produced, I make it how I like it myself….

    • that's what I had in my post
ones u get from supermarkets, will be all ice cream

head to a dessert or cake place (like Adriano and i'm sure lindt has it)
they have ice cream like cakes you described

Thats not ice cream cake in Australia though. The norm and expected ice cream cake in this country is all ice cream.

  • All depends how much you are willing to spend. Messina icecream sells icecream cakes with about 5 different fillings, but they do come at a hefty price.

I would actually be disappointed if I found real cake in my ice cream cake…

    • Have you ever had Ben & Jerry 'a strawberry cheesecake? It can be done, but a couple of thick layers is all that you need, needs to be 90% ice cream 10% cake

        Best. Ice cream. Ever.

        plus Maple Tree Hugger.

But the strawberry cheesecake one doesn't have cake in it. It's biscuit base, as in cheesecake base. Freaking delicious.

OMG!!! Same thing happened to me the other day!

I was really looking forward to those urinal cakes.

    • +3

Yeah, I got caught out similarly with a cake of soap. Not a skerrick of cake in it!

  • I agree, an ice cream cake with no cake is just icecream.

  • Always thought ice cream cake means ice cream and cake together. Didn't realize it's just all ice cream.

I hear beefcake has no beef or cake.

I always thought ice cream cake was all ice cream.

Till the one time I got one and had the opposite problem to you. It was mostly cake, no ice cream!!!

I suggest you buy some from baskin robbins. Theirs is mostly cake no ice cream too. Whereas cold rock from memory is mostly if not all ice cream no cake.

Lesson learnt - always ask before you buy.

Sorry but I lol-ed at reading your post cos that was my reaction when I first bought an ice-cream cake here too!!
I grew up eating ice cream cakes that had the right proportion of sponge cake and ice-cream and they were really yummy so I was really disappointed when I bought one and they were all ice-cream. Just make your own if you can't find it! Buy a sponge cake, split it and layer with ice-cream.
