Vaya vs Optus

I know Vaya runs on the Optus network, but I don't understand why it more value for money than Optus. Is the data slower or something?

  • Not sure about the exact details, but I believe Optus is a wholesaler of their 4G network. Companies pay a nominal fee to use their network. The price/value is determined by the customer - i.e. level of support and so on (you can't exactly walk into a shop and ask Vaya for help.

  • i am currently using vaya and not getting singal in some areas of brisbane cbd and nearby suburbs . on the other hand using lycamobile for another mobile with out any issue.

    • Ummm Lycamobile is not on the Optus Network.

      From their FAQ:
What coverage do I get with Lycamobile?
Lycamobile uses Telstra telecommunications 3G network in Australia.

Simply put, it's not just about the network. Obviously I don't have access to Optus' balance sheets, but I suspect that a lot of their expenses have to do with service, running stores, providing support…etc. rather than the maintenance of services. Think about it, do you really think that Optus stores around the country sell enough to pay their staff and rent? I doubt it, most of them are there to sign contracts and to "advertise" the Optus brand. Vaya, of course, does not have these expenses and can offer a lower priced service.

Happy Vaya customer for a year now. I had the most horrible experience with Vaya on my very first month where I was incorrectly charged excess fee for data consumed. I had to involve TIO and gave them enough evidence. TIO took their time but ultimately found the case in my favour and Vaya reversed the excess fee immediately.

I could've left Vaya the second month after the reversal but I told myself that the worst was over and decided to stick with them. I'm glad I stayed because I have had ZERO problems since. Their plan is the best value for money in Australia, almost too good to be true. Their CEO Ben maintains an active presence in Whirlpool and they have improved a lot. I have never had to call their customer care after the first month. I'm glad to be in a plan with no contract for 2 years.

Yes there are minor downsides: data charged in MB in stead of KB, every session is automatically 1 MB, Need to be careful around 1.3G data mark else they might terminate data for the rest of the month. However in terms of value for money they are hard to beat.

  • I been with Vaya almost 2 years now, and have never had any issue with them at all. I was with Telstra and when I moved houses I had no Telstra reception at all, thats how I ended up with Vaya.

  • I switched from Optus to Vaya. No difference in reception etc, just a much lower price!

  • With the Virgin mobile plans, how many minutes would $300 of calls give you?
