Too much Apple Talk - What's your next phone?

With all the Apple topics being discussed thought I'd create a topic that's not about the new iPhone.

What phone will you buy next (or are waiting for)?

Currently have a Nexus 5, awaiting the new Nexus whatever it will be called.

Next phone will be one of the new iPhones. Not sure which one.
Now that they have gone to a bigger screen, I will move back, as I prefer iOS much more than anything else I've used.

  • I carry both an iPhone and an Android, currently an iPhone 5 and an LG G2.

Technically it's time to upgrade the iPhone but I may see what the LG G4 offers next year and hold off getting the next iPhone until the next iteration of the 6plus model whatever they decide to call it.

I do want an apple watch, but again the second generation, I think it should be much better by then and I can wait.

  • +1

waiting for the G3 to hit a particular price point before I close the deal, getting close now…

  • Looking at the iphone 6+ and the new nexus when it comes out. I like a clean OS so I would only go stock android. Also I hope they bring the htc one m8 with windows to Australia, that would be pretty amazing!

  • +1

Keeping an eye out for the Nexus 6 as a possible if I need one. I have a Note 2 at the moment which I will probably use until it dies/doesn't work with apps. I loaded Cyanogenmod to get Android 4.4.4.

These days I am over the need to get the new thing craze. I sold my iPads and only have an iPhone for work that I try to ignore as much as possible. I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet which is great too. These Samsung devices were quite well specced when they come out so they should last a while.

Half tempted to get another Note 2 as a backup if I see one cheap enough.

  • Have a note 2 and now am looking at the z1 compact, if I can get my hands on a demo then I'll decide.

  • +1

    Galaxy S2 -> Nexus X if it's under 5.5", if not Nexus 5 or LG G2.
A bit worried about gps on the G2 though as I like to use my phone for jogging.

  • Got SGS 4 at the moment. Will get either 6 Plus or Note 3, still undecided about that one.
Prefer the look and feel of the iPhone, but spec wise, the Note 3 is a much better phone.

    • +1

From my experience, it's not always about the spec sheet of the hardware.

Sometimes how the hardware handles the software installed counts for much more.

IOS is just so clean and simple to use. Samsung keeps trying their best to slow down everything they sell and force people to install customer ROMs.

      • i have to agree, my s4 is still running release date jelly bean, still no update to kitkat, nad i bought it outright from DS for $799 first day.
however my ipad from 3 years ago keeps getting updates just today i got ios 8 update,
however I still think iphones are way overpriced for what they are. so the best thing are the nexus line of phones with fast updates unlike shitty Samsung..
ive been thinking about giving cynogenmod a try and flashing it to my s4, but haven't had the time to do the research necessary before installing it.

  • Currently on Note 2, running LiquidSmooth 4.4.4 rom, runs fairly well but crashes almost daily and does strange things such as not being able to turn the screen on after taking a call, dropping calls etc, easy enough for me to deal with but it drives my fiance crazy. I've factory reset back to Samsung's latest version and it is just so slow! So I'm in the market for a new phone (as my 2 yr contract is up anyway). Was hoping to be wowed by the Note 4, but not very excited by it, was a bit iPhone user before the Note 2 so slightly interested in the 6+ but again, not really excited by it. The HTC One M8 is looking good, but being released earlier in the year it makes me want to wait for the next iteration. Once Note 4 and 6+ are in stores I will get some hands on action and see what feels better in the hand I guess. I need minimum 64GB non expandable or 32GB with SD (50GB of music that I don't feel the need to stream) which cuts out of few handsets straight away!

    • maybe give slimkat a go - probably the most reliable and stable custom rom available for most devices - that said, not sure of it's availability/support for the Note 2. Also I don't think the performance difference between the M8 (snapdragon 801) and newer devices (probably snapdragon 805) will be rather minimal. I guess the Oneplus One fits the bill, if you're looking at the note/6+, has 64GB internal storage (not sd card support). With the current 15% off can grab one for $392 which is a steal, specs wise.

    • try rom DN3 on note 2, its great and you will have S5 and note 3 features and has a good battery life.

    • had the Note 2 and got done by the Sudden Death Syndrome, will never buy another Samsung again

  • +2

I've had the note 2 for over a year now and a bit over it. Ever since upgrading to 4.3 (and now on 4.4.2) I've had massive battery drain issues due to mdm_hsic_pm0 wakelock which has been talked about on xda forums but haven't found any successful fix.

Not sure what android phone I'd go next, but I'd like to move away from samsung. I don't think I can go down in screen size either, so has to be at least 5.5 inches that isnt an iphone!

    • +3

oneplus one, again, 5.5" and a steal with the current 15% off eBay deal.

      • +1

LG G Pro 2 is a good upgrade from Note 2.
My wife loves it after decomminissioning her note 2.
Got it for her then sold off the Note 2 for $200 making a new phone upgrade for $200 which is awesome.

      • havent heard of the oneplus, just did a quick google search and looks interesting.

  • +5

    AppleTalk isn't used by iPhones.

    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppleTalk

    • Matt fixes it again !

  • +1

couldn't pass up paying $365 (-2% cashrewards) for the 64GB OnePlus One, so much for waiting for the next Nexus :/

    • Definitely, that's a fantastic buy. I have the OnePlus also and you will not regret it. Same specs as the G3 except with more storage and a 1080 screen (G3 screen is better but maybe drains battery more?) and a bigger battery - comes in cheaper to boot!

    @beaver2233:
Nexus 5 waiting for the next nexus…

Did we just become best friends?

  • +3

    Nokia e63 or e71.

    • +1

You'll have no more battery life issues with either of those…IME at least a week, possibly a fortnight between charges, depending on usage. My old e63 was one of the best phones I've ever owned, right up there with the old 5510. :)

      • +1

Definitely. I bought both handsets for around $60. Good to have around as backups/secondary handsets for my HTC8X.

  • +1

Just bought an LG G3 for $505, very keen to receive it after using an iPhone 4 for so long (3 Years)

  • If I was looking for a new phone I'd consider the Sony Z3 compact or anything <65mm across. I know it's a bit specific but I'm not a fan of large phones and feel like that width is close to the max for it to be always comfortable to use single handedly. I've had a 4S since launch and it's still fine to use.

  • +1

    upgrading to a nokia 3210!!! :)

  • Will be waiting for the next Nexus.

    Currently have a One M8.
Battery life is fantastic 1-2 full days of Uni which includes tethering, screen on 75% brightness, WiFi on if not tethered, GPS occasionally and background data on.
It looks amazing and the front facing speakers are such a simple design element that seems so overlooked on other phones for how practical it really is!
Camera is really not that impressive, have barely used the ultra pixel 2nd camera. Although the post picture refocusing works alright sometimes.

Hoping the next Nexus will be all of the above plus more!

    • Yeah the camera really put me off the one m8, hopefully htc refines it in the next iteration and it will be the perfect andriod smartphone. Do you find the phone very slippery or do you use a case?

      • +2

It's amusing because before launch, everyone was in awe, thinking of the possibilities of 2 cameras! Hahah!

Yeah, extrememly slippery. I never usually use cases on my phones apart from the SG4 because Sview, but it's a must on this phone.

I use this one, it's cheap, looks good, doesn't completely block the IR blaster, and it doesn't add too much bulk!

  • Note 4 for me.

Hopefully a last one too… don't know what to do with the old 4S and soon to be old S4.

  • Just got a Sony Z2 less than a month ago from the eBay Sunday deal (Kogan). Upgrade from Nexus 4. Loving it so far. Conscious of the self-cracking issue so got tempered glass screen protector for both front and back. Next phone will probably be in the next 1.5-2 years - probably Sony Zx or Nexus x.

    • I have a Nexus 4 with zero issues, and have just bought a Xperia Z2… what have I done???

      • ? Got no issues with my Z2, the glass protectors cost me <$10 and is mainly a precaution and also protection from scratches. My main reason for the upgrade? I wanted a better phone camera for quick snaps especially since I have an upcoming trip to Europe. I don't regret my decision but hey, to each his own :-).

        • ooh yeah i'm not saying that there's an isssue… just saying that I jumped on the gun and bought a new phone :S

DO you find the size too big? That's my biggest concern!

(And what did you do with your Nexus?)

        • @inose:

Yeah, I also thought initially that I would have a problem with the size but surprisingly didn't need to adjust to it significantly size-wise. Though I installed Nova launcher almost immediately coz I didn't really like the Sony UI. I didn't regret the upgrade at all and love the Sony apps like Smart Connect and Walkman.

At the moment, my Nexus 4 is delegated full-time to my Philips speaker dock as a digital radio.

        • @docpol:

          Oh cool.

Can you comment on it's multitasking ability… or there lack of?

I'm relating this to the Galaxy S5 (or Samsung products in general) which have Multi Window, where you can do two things (or more on tablets) at once… like Youtube, while browsing the web on Chrome.

Have you found a way to do this on the Z2?
Also how's the camera, and speakers, compared to the Nexus 4?

          Thanks

  • +1

Very late to the party but just picked up the Lumia 920 in that amazing red.. must say though the 930's look an amazing bit of kit, best looking phone on the market imo

  • Note 4

  • My mobile contract is coming to an end soon and i'm in a dilemma, figuring out what should be my next phone. To go with the S5 or LG G3??. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the S5 as their next phone.
I would like wait for the Note 4 but i think its too big for my liking. Now, I'm leaning towards the S5 due to better battery performance, and I have also read in some forums and site that the G3 has some heating and other minor issues. The large 5.5" screen on the G3 is really great on a phone of that size.
What you guys reckon, G3 or S5?

    • they're both good phones, couldn't really go wrong with either to be honest.

    • I have had both s5 and Note 3, (lost the s5 in thailand, funny story) but i prefer the note for the battery performance. maybe its how I use it. I also bought a spare battery and charge kit from samsung $55 and I havnt had to plug my phone in directly in 6 months. LOVE IT. Swapping the batt takes 2 seconds and reboot takes 30 secs, another advantage over apple.

I would wait for the note 4!but thats because I have an office job and size has never been a problem for me. (or my phone haha)

  • My current phone is Galaxy Nexus.
Planning to upgrade in couple of months. My main points for a new phone are.
    1. below $400.
    2. 5-5.5 inch display.
    3. Large battery that can last minimum 2 days use (about 3 hours screen on time per day ).
    4. Full HD or better display.

I got LG G2 and OPO in my mind. may be LG G3 and Galaxy Note 3 will also come down to $400 range in couple of months time.

    • +2

Can't see the G3 coming down to $400 any time soon. OPO's probably your best option with those specs.

  • Currently using a note 2… contemplating whether I should go note 4 or OPO…

Only feature I love about the note is the S-Pen… but not too sure if it is worth the extra $300+ =(

Also read about the Google Shamu (Nexus 6?) and seems to have similar specs to the note 4… so that is also a choice.

    • +1

No-one really knows the specs of the Nexus X(6) for sure yet. We don't even really know the name for sure…
The rumours are all over the place and vary from a 5.2" screen to 5.9" or maybe 2 options?
I'm hoping for 5.2" and a 32GB around $450, but we'll only know for sure around Halloween.

  • I have upgraded from S4 to G3. First experience with G3. Not bad but still getting used to the back button.

  • just ordered iPhone6.
Was looking at HTC m8 but camera sucks big time.

    Galaxy is a big dislike, Note is Okay but a bit big for me;

  • Moto g to a samsung galaxy s5 due to 15% off. Contemplated waiting for the note 4 but ended up buying the s5 lte a with a better resolution. Keen on playing around with it.

  • Well my Lumia 920 contract runs out at the end of the year, hopefully looking forward to a 935 or 1030 around that time (probably into jan/feb of next year)

  • I'd wait for the Sony Z3 Compact if I were on the market today for a phone - one happy owner of the Z1 Compact, ticks all the boxes: spec, performance, price (thanks Mr Kogan), battery life (proper all-day phone despite the smaller size), and most importantly, a phone you can actually use with one hand instead of this silly "phablet" sized halfway house that even Apple has caught on. And it doesn't have the heavy-handed HTC/Samsung skin that makes things confusing (and I suspect giving Android the bad rep)

  • +6

Apple is disgraceful. They feel the need to release a new IOS and I devices. They are just greedy. And the people that buy their junk are pathetic little sheep. BAaaaaa BAaaaaa

    • You should add a /sarcasm at the end in case it's too subtle for people to catch

    • what did I just read?

  • +1

Good question. Far as I can tell, I'm stuck with my Xperia P for the forseeable future, because phones in the 3.5-4.0" size range I find optimal have been relegated to afterthought status, such that more recent models in those sizes are technically no improvement and physically inferior to phones the same size released two years prior.

    • Use a phone with 5" screen for just a day - you wont go back to 3.5

      • Maybe entertain the possibility there are people who actually prefer smaller phones just as there are people who prefer smaller laptops - different strokes for different folks.

Imagine if you couldn't get a new 13" or smaller laptop that was any better than the best of them made two years ago. That's the phone industry at the moment for those who prefer decent, but small.

  • +2

I'm actually sick of both android & iOS…seriously considering trying Windows for my next phone.

    • +2

Stew - go for it. Heaps of new improvements coming in Windows 8.1. I'm stuck on W8.0 on my HTC8x for now, but I'm not complaining. Have had this phone for a year now and haven't looked back on Android. Unless you need heaps of specialized apps you will be fine and the integration with Outlook/Skydrive/Office/Other MS products is perfect for my needs.

      • I've got a Lumia 920 in my ebay cart right now…for $181.05 delivered I think I'll take the punt! Cheers! :)

      • You can upgrade your 8x to 8.1 easily- not sure if you know or not. If you don't then just download an app called developer preview from Microsoft store. And register using your hotmail email. And check for updates. You will get updates coming through and at the end you will be on 8.1. I am running it for last 6 months or so and it's quite an improvement over windows 8.

    • I'm often looking over enviously at the androids but so far my Lumia 625 has been my favourite all time phone. Bit underpowered and crappy camera tbh but can't expect much for what I paid. Love the UI, office/skydrive integration and the offline maps (paid upgrade) have been great for travel. Look forward to upgrading to a new Lumia soon with a better camera (if I don't get sucked back to an android).

    • i bought my dad a windows 8 phone for 300$ a nokia few months ago, nothing special man not really interesting, he wanted a few apps on his phone that my mum had one her android but they were not available for windows devices. you would be better off with either android or ios..

  • Next phone I get will likely be the Galaxy S6

    • +1

Hopefully Samsung brings it's magic back for the S6. I am anticipating a real revamp of the design like the shift from the S2 to the S3. With the slump in sales compared to previous years, I'm sure Samsung will innovate more and clean up touchwiz - that's long overdue

      • Honestly if you have used a galaxy s5, or their tablets, touchwiz not an issue in my opinion.

It doesn't lag, or you'll get used to it. Also you get multi window with it, as well as blocking mode for my ex. Can't live without those.

      • It will still have shitty touch wiz which im starting to hate now, why cant they make a deal with google and have their phones run vanilla android, they always have had the hardware on lock down just not the damn software side of things.

        • +1

Because multitasking is handled by TouchWiz.

        • @anthonettex: if your talking about the multi window thing, i only used it once in my 1.5 years ownership.

        • @striker5950:

I use it all the time.

I 'stream' music on Youtube, or video playback, on the top 1/4 of the screen… and chrome / internet browsing on the other 3/4 of the screen. The screen is big enough, so no worries it works well ;)

I wish this function was available on other big screen phones, and even tablets. Why the heck do they not have this, expect for Samsung??

  • +1

I just got a Moto G for me and my wife just a month ago. We decided not to spend more than $250 in a mobile phone anymore. My last mobile before the Moto G was the HTC Incredible S and was painfully slow. I paid $500 for that phone then. Not anymore.

  • Probably some kind of Nokia Lumia.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned it :'(

  • +1

Currently have S4. Have had it for about 18 months now. Used ebay 15% to buy a new genuine samsung S4 battery (I saved $1.69 yay), so looks like I'll be using the S4 for a while yet.

  • -4

I'm not an apple fanboi, but the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are things of beauty - something Samsung and others have yet to pull off.
My next phone will NOT be a 6 or 6+ because I have a 5s which I intend to have for a good 12 months more, and by then the 6s Plus will be available and that will be my next phone.
For me it's not an e-peen contest. It's about having the best phone without wasting money. Some might consider an iPhone a waste of money considering you can get an android with similar specs for hundreds less, but I've used android devices and I've been underwhelmed with their ease of use, apps and build quality. And their resale value sux eggs.

    • +5

it's all subjective mate - I dislike the look of the 6 and 6+, wouldn't call them a thing of beauty at all. Much prefer the look of the previous models. As for ease of use, apps and build quality on android, again its completely subjective. I myself struggle to use iPhone's/iOS, and don't really find it all that easy to use. Build quality again, there are 100's of Android devices, all with differing levels of build quality…

      • Agreed. HTC is winning on the design front and it's even functional (front facing stereo speakers - yes, please).
I also think the iPhone 5S looks better than the 6 especially with the cheap antenna lines.

    • Your view would be valid if it was 2010. I was with iOS for 4 years (iphone3g/iphone3gs/iphone4) then switched to Galaxy s3 and now the 1+1. The difference between iOS and Android is like ChromeOS and Windows 8.1. I understand people who like simplicity but not the price they are willing to pay for it.

  • Nexus 5 only came out in November last year. I bought it in December. Won't be upgrading any time soon.

    • Same, though the One+1 phone is tempting.
But.. that Qi wireless charging and the quickest and cleanest upgrade path to Android L is what makes the Nexus 5 so compelling still.

  • +1

My 1+1 will see me out for over a year I'd imagine, so I'll skip the next round of android phones and catch the one after to see what takes my fancy. :)

  • I am waiting for the Note Edge. I would like to use it for a while to see if the screen is just a gimmick or it is actually useful. If not, the Note 4.

  • I am on S4 mini and hoping to have Motorola Phonebloks as my next phone. Hope it will soon be available for consumers.
    See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQjGBEEiejU

  • Going back to a Nokia 5110, I really don't need that many features on a phone!!!

Plus these new phones are little radiation cancer boxes.

  • Still using Galaxy S3, use to be right into phones and technology but so sick of it now. They get outdated so fast. I hardly touch the thing anyway except for photos when out, little bit of web browsing and phone/text. Use my ipad mini more which cost significantly less and is a lot more enjoyable to use to be honest. I wont be upgrading my phone for a while, if I could sell it and buy a One+One for little outlay then that would be the only thing that would tempt me, everything else is over priced.

  • +1

I'm interested in the BB Passport. It looks pretty nice.
I was interested in the z10 when it first came out, but I went iPhone instead. Now with iP6 not being a major upgrade, and iOS8 having been taken over by Android last year, I might change systems

  • For sheer coolness I'd love the sharp aquous crystal, but it probably won't come to Oz :(

    • That phone looks so smooth, no bezels looks amazing! Pity it's only a mid range phone, would have been a great flagship with a real point of difference…

    • Specs are midrange , design execution is superb would buy one for the cool factor if
      a) available here
b)had network support for Aus - its CDMA/EVDO in japan

    • +1. Makes every current and new smartphone look dated.

It actually has a larger brother, the 5.5" Aquos Crystal X with 801 Snapdragon, which is only available in Japan. And it's not available from http://www.kyoex.com/ either (perhaps in the near future?)

  • Currently using 5s and now waiting for the new nexus X !

  • Sorry about the geeky language, But did you know there was a network protocol (like TCP/IP) from Apple known as Apple Talk?
Yes Google it not Apple it ;)

  • +1

    I just bought a Galaxy S5, and a Xperia Z2… And already have a Nexus 4.

Just deciding which one to keep, and which one to throw out the window.

    • +2

They are all very capable phones although if you threw the z2 out the window it would make a louder sound due to smashing the two glass plates compared to the plastic s5 which was made to be chucked out the window with all the bloatware clogging up the system..

      • Haha… fair enough. But I think Samsung's software is better than Sony's. Especially multi-window! Also, the camera comparisons and blind tests indicate that the camera is much better than Sony's washed out images!

Anyhow, I gave both phones for my dog and cat, respectively. My Nexus 4 is old, but most capable of everything i need it to do. Plus, it's small. =D
