Looking at new Credit Card

Currently have a suncorp platinum credit card that had its annual fee waived due to being staff. I left recently and received a letter in mail saying at my renewal date (mid oct) i will be charged the annual fee ($199).

As an ozbargainer that wont be happening so shopping around new card.

I do have the citibank signature card but with the current 80% balance transfer i cant really utilise it for another 6 months.

Any decent credit cards i should look at? Mostly in order to earn reward points. I pay off my charges always within a few days it hitting my account.

If you are collecting points for Qantas Frequent Flyer, check out the Qantas AMEX Discovery card, there is no annual fee, and you earn points at the rate of $1=1QFF.

Also, currently you can earn up to 7500 bonus points - see the conditions:

  • Fiance' is a flight attendant so not really interested in collecting ff points.

      Well could have said so.

Who's to say you'll get the benefit of that anyway. Things change, heck you may not even marry - shock horror, it happens.

Amex is recommended as it's good service and you can take advantage of those weekly credit back offers.

There are plenty of credit card comparison websites out there. Start there. Narrow down shortlist.

      • Oversight on my part. Thanks ill check out that out and keep an eye out here.

  • Check http://rewardscompared.com/cards to see which card will get you the most return for your average spend.

  • What credit limit did you get on the citibank card?

    • $27k i think. Used the 80% balance tfr recently so cant use the card for other purchases for the meantime

      • cheque to self? Also can i ask, what income did you have to get that credit limit?

        • Yep cheque to self (took about 6 weeks to receive as first chq wasnt received). Actually i think credit limit is $25k. Salary of $100k.

  • There are several no annual fee credit cards available in the marketplace:
28 Degrees Mastercard (issued by G.E.Money) - also useful for buying stuff from overseas as no exchange fees are charged
    Coles Mastercard
Paying an annual fee is totally unnecessary and no self-respecting ob would do it!

    • An annual fee can be ok sometimes. Especially when the value from the card benefits exceeds the cost of the annual fee.
Take my platinum edge amex for example. $149 fee gets me a return virgin domestic flight each year and 3 points per dollar spent at supermarkets(amex points convert 1:1 to virgin and many other airlines). Also I receive great statement credit offers like the costco one last year where I basically got $120 for free!

  • do you still get the bonus if you buy some thing with 28 Degrees Mastercard and it goes down in price in 6 months you can claim the differences ?

    • Price protection…Yep sure can (if u elected for that cover already). I claimed it a few weeks back for my mobile.

    • Yes 28 degrees still have that. Just made my 3rd claim the other day. No questions asked =) (but keep screenshots or photos of sales you see just in case they do ask)

      • Do you get charged an excess per claim? Is this offer quite exclusive to 28degrees?

        • No charge for claiming. Theres a few credit cards that now offer price protection. Most have 28 deg card for foreign exchange purchases so the price protection was more of a bonus

  • HSBC has its Platinum credit card with no annual fee for life. Also comes with free travel insurance, price protection, extend warranty and accidental damage.

    • Just to add, the rewards on this card equate to half a cent per dollar (0.5 % ) if redeeming for Coles/Woolies gift cards ie. 10,000 points $50 gift card. And that is not too bad.

  • If you pay it off within a few days of it hitting your account, just use your Citibank signature card. I'm sure the application of payments onto the card will wipe out purchases first, then the balance transfer to self.

That's what I did for a few decent purchases when I was toward the end of my 80% balance transfer on the card. Never got charged interest for doing so.
