Advice on all in one desktop PCs

Hi all,
I'm searching for a new all-in-one PC for my girlfriend. She really prefers laptops but has gotten into movie editing in the last few years so a larger screen would be a help but still in a compact format (i.e desktops are not an option for her). I usually buy Dell but the AIOs seem to be quite pricey there. Anyone got any recommendations?
Thanks

  • What about the option of having a powerful laptop + LCD monitor? Or how about Gigabyte Brix series (Vesa mountable)

    CentreCom has an AIO category.
    Also try ARC Computers

The decent ones start at $929 for a Core i3 HP Touchsmart. It's not exactly cheap, I know, but that is the sort of price you have to pay for a AIO that runs a proper desktop CPU and not a laptop one.

  • Thanks, the ASUS ones on the ARC site look a bit more reasonable. Anyone got some experience with these?

    • Be careful of which ones you get, some of the ASUS ones are using laptop CPU's not desktop CPU's. There is a major performance difference between the two, because their clock speeds and number of cores are different!

      For example,
      Asus ET2311IUKH with
Core i5 4440s this is a quad core processor.

      ASUS Asus ET2322INTH with
Core i5 4200U this is a dual core processor.

  • All in ones are generally awful value for money.

Just look on eBay and see the terrible prices that they fetch after two or three years.

But I wouldn't recommend buying a secondhand one, as they are full of specialist parts and therefore expensive to fix.

The only advantage is neater cabling and styling. A laptop solves your cabling problem. And apart from Apple all in ones are hideous in appearance.

  • Build a mATX box with a 4790[K] that destroys all the other options.

  • Oh well sometimes image is everything…
