Tips for home security

Hello all,

Once every couple of weeks or so I am home alone overnight. We got a new neighbour about 6 months ago and there are some questionable people regularly coming and going next door. We had some random sleep in our garage over night and there have also been some violent crimes in the area lately; I feel quite vulnerable when I am home by myself. We are hoping to buy in the next 6 months but I am wondering about some short term security measures we could put in place so I can feel more safe? We are a little limited as the house is a rental property (no guard dog allowed!).

I have been looking at small wifi cameras and I like the idea of being alerted when they are tripped, but worry that putting up a camera sends a message that there is stuff inside worth stealing (There isn't really). I bought a qicklock and put it on my door at night but that's about all.

Can anyone recommend a nifty device or strategy for home security?

Many thanks in advance!

    Locking the doors

  • Getting a 'beware of dog' sign might help if you feel that your neighbours are scoping out the place

  • See if you can track down some sensor lights for areas like the garage. I have seen non-hard wired ones which should be fine for a rental.

Also have a look at fixing those fake blue light alarm boxes to the house and some fake security stickers around the place.

When i was renting, I bought a small wifi camera which was disguised as an ordinary smoke detector. Its fairly cheap and quite well hidden.

  • The OP is feeling vulnerable when she is home alone - I can't see how an internal camera would help with that.

What is the OP hoping to achieve? To keep intruders out, or to be alerted if they get in? To get images of people trying to enter the property, or images of people after they're in?

I'd be worried about someone being able to get into my garage and sleep there. How did they get in? Is the garage connected to the house? What is the security on that door like?

Do you have deadlocks on external doors? Do you have locks on your windows? Have you talked to your rental agent? They may be willing to upgrade door and window security.

    • Agreed, my friend spent thousands on camera because she felt unsafe. Didnt stop someone from breaking into her house when she was at work. She managed to get a few okish images of the persons face, but the police said there was little they could do unless the person is caught or ID'd. Stopping people from getting in should be everyones first priority.

  • Thanks for your ideas guys, I think I would like to be alerted if someone tries to break in so I might look into wifi cameras. I am not so worried about people breaking in when there is no one home as there is nothing very valuable at home, but it is more my worry of someone trying to break in while I am there!

    • Damage can still be costly.

    • If you are worried about them breaking in then a wifi camera may not deter someone.
I would check out the sensor lights or a sensor alarm that you can stick on entrances you are concerned about.
Have a look at something like this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Motion-Sensor-Detector-Alarm-Wire…
You would be able to stick these onto the wall with a command hook or the like.
