  • Finally, a worthy successor to this legendary MSY deal from last year.

Wonder if this is nation-wide though. Also, it's a 3.5" enclosure with an external power supply.

    • You do realise that your link is a portable hdd (2.5 inch HDD), and this deal is a desktop drive which (3.5 inch HDD).

      • I was referring more to the price-per-gigabyte. That was about 6 cents per GB and this deal is 0.048c per GB.

        • +2

This drive requires an external power source while the other did not.

        • +3

Price/GB? What about the 2TB drives for $~79 from DSE?

          @bradbenn:

This drive requires an external power source while the other did not.

          Hence why I said:

Also, it's a 3.5" enclosure with an external power supply.

These Verbatims are well beyond their end-of-life and this is most likely very old stock that sat unnoticed somewhere for a long time.,

Given the low cost of 2.5" portable 1TB drives today, it makes much more sense to buy these Verbatims, rip the HDDs out of the enclosures and put them in a NAS or desktop; so the portability issue is a moot point.

          @bentan77:

Price/GB? What about the 2TB drives for $~79 from DSE?

Again, that roughly comes to 4 cents per GB, the same as this deal.

          0.048c per GB.

          Wow 4.8c per TB ;)

Again, that roughly comes to 4 cents per GB, the same as this deal.

          Not really that close.

          $79 2TB - 3.95c/GB
          $48 1TB - 4.8c/GB

So about a 20% increase. I guess if you only needed 500GB~1TB drive then this is a good deal.

        • @Amar89:

          This Deal = 4.8c/GB
          DSE 2TB Deal = 3.95c/GB
          BigW 2TB Deal = 2.7c/GB

          Please explain your above explanation.

        • @apnamasti: where is the bigw deal?

        • @Amar89: Yeah but the 2TBs are still better value if they're the same price/MB IMO if only for the fact that (physical case or shelf etc.) space is getting used better.

  • Is it Hitachi or Verbatim?

    • +1

      Verbatim uses Hitachi drives.

      • Historically their external HDDs have used everything from WD to Seagate and Hitachi.

I doubt the OP can guarantee you'll be getting a bonafide Hitachi HDD inside your enclosure unless he knows something we don't.

        • Historically yes, but recently no. Has been exclusively Hitachi for at least 4 years now.

  • How many frozen cokes did you down before you took that shot?

    • +1

      coronas you mean

  • isn't this an awful deal, cost per TB?

    • +2

Not everyone needs more than a terabyte.

      • +1

Wash your mouth out. It's cheap! I see your point tho - I use these on TV recorders, and they often spit the dummy once there's > 512 Files, so > 1TB is overkill.

        • Yeah I had to get a portable one for TAFE a while ago and all I could find in stores at the time was >750gb, >$70. Didn't need much space, just needed the speed of a hard drive

    • No, see my above posts. 4 cents per GB is about as good as the going rate in the HDD market today, if not slightly above average.

  • +1

I would gladly swap all my old 1 and 2 GB portable hard drives for 1 bigger unit.

I cant see the value here..

    • +2

Did they even make portable drives in those sizes? I can see why you wouldn't want them anymore, though.

  • +5

feels like 1TB external drives are the new 4gb USB drives… can't give them away

    • What are you smoking?

      • +1

Maybe smoking hard drives? :p Or setting hard drives on fire to light whatever they are smoking?

I am looking for a cheap External Hard drive for my Wii U. This should fit. Thanks

  • +2

Your full name is visible on the shared document in case you didn't want that.

    • Thanks fixed.

lol I remember using Nero back in the days…

I have a Verbatim of that same model on my desk right now, which came from the original Staples deals. I use it as a torrent dump storage drive, prior to sorting and transferring the data to my network drives.

It is great - the auto power-on and spin down actually WORKS, unlike many other brands of external drives. This means that it can be left plugged in and will only wake up when needed, which saves the internal HDD's life.

    • Auto on/off works fine on Seagate 4TB desktop expansion drives.

Would like to get my hands on Hitachi 2TB at a closeout price though.

    • -1

      ok.

    • So which HDD is inside?

  • couldn't find any @ cannington (wa) store.

  • I rang 2 around sydney and they said they don't have the HDD at all.
Any possibility someone can send me one from Sunshine? :)

  • Townsville store didn't have any of these ones. All portable.

  • 7200 or 5400 RPM? Says 7200 but I have my doubts!
