OK. Not sure why this deal hasn't been mentioned. At $273 it's the cheapest by about $50. Intel based NAS with USB3.0 and 2GB RAM. Not that cheapo ARM/Marvell rubbish.

If you can get it cheaper. Reading the reviews the USB performance on the Netgear looks very disappointing.
Umart has the N54L for $269 - http://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id…
Configuring FreeNAS to work properly and securely is far from straight forward. I know I have attempted several times without luck. I'm not a linux expert, but I have setup several Astrisk based systems before.
FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD not Linux. I know I know nit picking etc yes yes sorry not sorry =)

In a world where $26 ≈ $50
If you live near that one shop.
Shipping is $9.92
So… in a world where $35.92 ≈ $50?

I think you meant too write "Unfortunately it has significantly more power consumption that ARM/Marvell servers.
There are other similar performing NAS which much lower power consumption. The processor is only a small part of the equation. This series is better than the previous models, but still could be much better.
I am still not happy with Netgear for so quickly stopping the upgrading the OS on the previous series of NAS. Some of the other NAS specialists seem to continue upgrading the OS for much longer. Having said that their prices are significantly more for a similar performance.
I am still some what tempted by this unit, but I would need to much more research to find out more about how many bugs this current OS has and what the support and range for add-on apps are like. Again I suspect the later is going to be much better else where. How much that is worth I don't know.
http://www.openmediavault.org is my option. Much friendly to use.
Thanks for that, looks promising.
Serious question, why not just get an N54L for cheaper? I have them running freenas and they're awesome.
