somehow doubt it. deals like this rarely happen with apple.

      • +6

Deals rarely happen with Apple full stop. Their big black friday once a year sale was a gift card that can only be used at Apple store, and not in the same transaction, meaning you have to come back to get ripped off a second time.

    • +1

Apple wants to promote it's Airdrop feature for their devices and iBeacons for retailer use. It's very unlikely they will adopt NFC.

    • +8

They might do a low rate home loan for the iPhone 6.

If you can make the repayment upfront, 28 Degrees MasterCard's Price Protection has a significantly better payoff^. Up to $200, depending on the drop in price of the new phone.

    ^Many conditions apply.

    • +1

Even better coles cc price protection for 2 years.

Edit: 28 degrees is up to $600.

      • Ah yes, $600 is the correct upper limit. The most I've ever claimed was $199 on my Galaxy S3. Good times.

    • +1

But you need to sign up for price protection which you pay monthly. It's good if you leverage it a lot.

      • +2

If you only use the 28deg for online overseas purchases and large ticket aus items that you suspect may drop you can just pay off the value and not pay any fees ever.

Doesn't make sense to use it for everyday purchases and pay interest when you don't collect reward points on it.

      • +1

Only a % of monthly balance no? SO if you pay off CC on time then it's free.

"Lending criteria, terms and conditions, fees, and charges apply and are available on application"

There's usually a monthly fee for these kind of facilities.

"Lending criteria, terms and conditions, fees, and charges apply and are available on application"

        standard credit facility disclaimer

There's usually a monthly fee for these kind of facilities.

no extra fee here afaik :)

Can you buy from Kogan? Is there a list of participating retailers?

Does this mean you don't have to pay it off for 2 years? The amount will appear on your statement though won't it? Do you just ignore it?

Let's say the phone costs $800. It appears as Galaxy S5 - $800 on your next statement, for a total amount due of $2000. Do you just pay $1200, and always every month after that (for 2 years) pay $800 less than the amount payable?

    • I think all the interest free terms work the same,

      Bare minimum;
you pay the minimum monthly which could be like a percentage.
Then, pay any remaining at(or before) the end of term.

      Or what I did (for easy book keeping);
Divide the total by the available term. And pay monthly (which is when the statement arrives)
But its the same amount every month, so you know where your money is going.

This is assuming you are using the card only for that purchase, other purchases increase your minimum repayment, plus interest if you dont pay off the extra purchase (ir: fuel, groceries) that month (or 50 days or whatever it is on that card).

    • It does say 'any Australian retail store' so not sure if that includes online - it does also specify that online auction sites (like ebay.com.au) are excluded.

So, don't know whether Kogan is ok or not…

    • +2

Doubt it. Westpac want you to use paypass by your phone. I have an S5 and you need specific hardware and firmware. It will only work on the Australian version of the phone. Kogan's is an import

      • So does that mean you can't use paypass with a custom ROM? if that's the case then I'm not interested…

  • This is tempting as I have a Westpac card. I was originally going to get the free HTC one m7 for contract with Voda. Now just have to find good offer for the s5 or s4

    • +8

Free is better than needing to pay it back in 2 years time.

      • Good point

  • Nfc payments?

    • Yeah this is why Westpac are doingthe deal, their NFC payments are only with those samsung phones. I guess they want to try and get more people using them. Personally I would rather they spent their time and effort undoing the exclusivity deal with samsung and roll out NFC payments to any phone like CUA.

  • Will note 4 be out by Oct 14th?

    • It will be announced on 3 September. Not sure when it will be landed in Australia though…

  • Does ignite cards (issued by Westpac) qualify?

    • +1

I've just phoned Westpac as I have one of the Ignite cards. The guy I spoke with (Sam) said yes, Ignite cards are eligible as well.

I also queried whether or not the purchase could be made through an Australian on-line store as they advise "Visit any Australian retail store before 14th October 2014" He said that is also fine (physical store or on-line) providing it's not an auction site (Ebay) and providing the web address has .com.au at the end

I intend on buying a couple of the Galaxy S5's that are compaitble with the new 700Mhz Telstra 4G frequency from here - http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/Samsung-Galaxy-S5…

  • OP might want to put this in the post as well…

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/158126

No annual fee credit card. 2 years you might get stung an annual fee for the credit card so get the free one for truly fee free.

  • The only issue here is that you need to buy the phone from an Australian retailer.

  • +2

other than maybe $20 savings in interest over 2 years, what's the benefit of buying something you can't afford?

its not like the cash flow ($2000 max) u gain from this will be a life saver… if it is, then you shouldn't spend this money on a phone.

    • +1

if you were to buy an $800 phone on your credit card you'd be paying out a lot more than $20 in interest.
couple of hundred bucks at very least over 2 years.

  • Use your existing Westpac Credit Card (or apply for a new Westpac Credit Card beforehand here)

Someone want to explain why this is enticing?

This only enables you to repay the phone monthly, without interest.

But what's so different to signing up to a contract for 24 months?

Looking at a normal retailer, a Galaxy S5 cost $896.

A vodafone plan with calls and 3gb of data cost $75 a month.

If you buy the phone outright it cost about $37.3 a month.

So you would be paying $38 more a month on calls and data which you would be doing normally anyways, unless you're the ultra frugal types, then you wouldn't be owning a a phone at this range in the first place. Aldi packs cost $30 a month already for something decent. TPG is shit now which would also cost you at least $30 for anything decent. Unless you buy $10 packs which has no data, then… you should be getting a phone that's not reliant on data then.

Don't see how enticing this can be.

If this is their way to promote their bank facilities fine, but if it's to lure sign ups, that isn't that great.

    • +1

That's a whole lot of assumptions about people and plans you are making there.
Even though they bumped up the price and lowered the data, I'm still happy enough on my $17/ month on TPG.
which is a long way off your assumption of $30 per month for anything decent.

you seem offended by this deal for some reason?

either you're offended by the deal, or the prepostorious notion that people buy phones outright?

"But what's so different to signing up to a contract for 24 months?"
      carrier flexibility for one.

  • does anyone know if a business credit card qualifies?

Can I buy a Korean 32gb off eBay

    • +4

I don't think you're allowed to buy ANYBODY off ebay- regardless of their origin or memory.

  • Excludes ebay because buying the phone from ebay will save more money than this deal.

    • …because they're almost entirely grey imports.

  • is there any chance it may work with st george because they own westpac ?

    • +2

      @Slippy

I think Westpac own St G. not the other way.

    • Other way around.

St.George, Bank Of Melbourne & BankSA are all part of Westpac.

  • Do I still have to pay it off every month? Or can I just pay the whole amount on the 23rd month?

I have 3 Westpac credit card does that mean I can buy 6 phones?

    • Yes you will still need to pay off the phone each month which is either 2% of the closing balance or $10.

Doesnt say anything about a limit per customer only per credit card accounts so I guess you can? But what are you going to do with 6 phones in the first place?

      • I will pay off all the rest of the monthly spending on the CC except the balance of the phone ;-)

How do they know which part I am paying off? Let's just say bought 2 phones costing $1000, my regular other monthly spending another $1500 and I only pay $1500 on statement every month - which means the balance of $1000 for the phones gets carried forward for 23 months. Will I still incur interest for the $1000 (phones)??

As to the question of 6 phones, just curious, thats all.

        • Not too sure about that. Best thing to do is to ring Westpac and find out the exact terms and conditions

        • +2

Typically any payment made is against the credit with the highest interest rate.

Unfortunately, by not paying off all of the balance, you typically will lose some interest free days.
          For example:
1st month: You bought 2 phones costing $1000. Your regular spending is $1500. You pay $1500 - your balance is $1000, at 0%.
2nd month: You spend $1500. The $1500 starts accruing interest after the statement is issued because you don't fall under interest free days anymore. Therefore, you must pay your normal spend BEFORE the statement is issued. Otherwise, you will be paying $1500*0.2/365 = 82 cents a day.

Essentially, you really don't want to be using the card for anything else unless you are vigilant in maintaining a balance of the cost of the phones on your account, especially around the time of when your statement is being issued.

          See PDS:
When do the “further interest free days” conditions apply?
A purchase and Purchase Fee will have “further interest free days” only if:
          • You have paid the closing balance in full by the due date shown on the statement preceding the purchase and the debiting of the Purchase Fee (i.e. the “initial interest free days” condition has been met); and
          • You pay the closing balance in full for the due date shown on the statement recording that purchase and the debiting of the Purchase Fee

        • @forumninja: That's what I suspected. This is going to complicate things.

  • Last time I tried to use a Westpac deal, the cut my interest free period short by about 66%.

Took this to my bank rep. and never heard anything back about the overcharged interest. Decided to just let it go and close the card.

  • What a ducking weird promotion.
