Using one ADSL connection for 3 houses

Hello Everyone!
Can someone please help me find a deal or recommend a product to meet my requirement

Background
I am moving to house where my neighbors are my friends. basically there are 3 townhouses built on one block.
So I was thinking to get 1 unlimited internet bundle and share among us.

I am not very computer savvy but I heard there are products like wifi extender etc that can help.

Therefore, I would like to know if it is possible to do what I am trying to do? If yes, do I need high-end modem/router and wifi extender? any recommendations?

So, how many users will be sharing your one internet connection?

    • During daytime 3 users and after work about 8… this includes a internet t.v as well
Sorry about late reply, I just figured out how to check my messages :)

    HI Barcuza,

Yes you could share it, you could use a wireless access point to allow wireless devices to connect onto the same network and combine it with wifi extenders to boost the signal.

In saying that you are always better off with a physical wire to the houses for the better speed.

I will mention that your internet is going to suck when they are all on the connection with you unless you are really close to the exchange.

    ** Edit **
Also wanted to add that using wireless at their houses will be very patchy unless there is a strong signal, in the event that you are having issues on your connection they will be calling you and I wouldn't expect to be able to do anything more than internet browsing if you have many people on.

    • Hi
Wouldn't the internet be good if I use the wifi extenders? a work colleague mentioned netgear night hawk (recently posted as deal).. should do the job.

max will be 8 at night time, when everyone is home.

      • Not really. The network would be quick between the devices but the internet would be slow.

This is how you work it out:
        1) Go to speedtest.net (By no means accurate but it gives you an idea)
        2) Find out what your download bandwidth is, something like 5Mbps is likely
        3) Divide that by the potential amount of devices you could have on your connection
        4) Realise it may not be that fast at all!

Another way to think of it is like a big pipe which has many smaller pipes connected into the side of it.
You run some thread through the smaller pipes into the bigger pipe and pull them through the end. You keep adding more and more threads into the smaller pipes and eventually the smaller pipes and the big pipe are all congested with threads making it hard to pull through, this is the internet.

      • 8 people is a bit much for 1 adsl2 connection i think. Especially with a internet t.v unit. All it would take is a few of them to watch youtube and you will all have problems.
It depends on how they use it, if it is some basic web browsing and emails then it should be fine. Find out more about how they would use it first -do they download movies, play games, use VOIP/Skype?

Whats the possibility cabling the houses with each having their own access point? (probably not likely as you are already suggesting wifi extenders)

Might also want to consider going with Cable or NBN if you plan to share internet. If on ADSL, your speeds may vary between 1~20mbps which is not going to be sufficient bandwidth for any more than a few users.

    • I am in Laverton, so sorry no cable or NBN available. Only have ADSL 2+.
I am trying to find a vendor who is closer to me.. so far its TPG.. about 3kms away.

One other thing you might want to consider is that your name will be on the account, so anything that your neighbours do on the internet comes back to you.

    • lol true,, we been friends since last 10 years.. so hopefully i am safe…(fingers crossed)
reason it has to be my house is that my house is in the middle.

If you aren't technically savvy. Let your savvy friends handle it and share from their end.

You don't want to be the one waking up at 3am in the morning to reboot the router or call tech support if there is a problem.
Your savvy friends (hopefully there is someone) is better with this responsibility.

    • hmm i am the most tech savvy of the bunch … plus my house in middle so i guess makes a good reason to have it my place.

  • Hello all
Thank you so much for taking time and responding. Please accept my apologies for late reply. I was checking my account everyday for updates but only figured out today (by going to posts etc)…

IIGnomeII thanks I will try and research about wifi extenders.

    once again thankyou all..

  • Coverage might be iffy and 'range extenders' slow down the network as they simply 'rebroadcast' the original signal.

You may get away with just having an AP on each one of your two adjoining walls. These are good and they get their power over their ethernet cable so are easy to put up as 'temporary' installs. One on one wall and one on the other might do you and would be better than range extenders.
