At least he's not stuck in your roof. :)

  • Sounds normal for Australia. Cheap if you were in Perth :)
But with the internet and your local Bunnings, its time to cut the cord of dependency.
    Blocked drain?

  • It would help if you stated what the problem was and if the plumber was aware of it before coming out.

    • i just said i a had a leaking hot water system

  • Did he mention a inspection or quote fee when you first contacted him?
If not then just tell him sorry.
Aussie tradesmen and probably the world over are mostly a disorganised mob always looking for the easy con job.
I would not deal any further with that one, just call a couple of others and ask if there will be any fee for assessing the job first.

    • no he didnt, he said that i was "supposed to ask"

  • Thats a call out fee, OP. Pretty standard "ripoff" for tradies here in Aus. And now with that thing with the unions in QLD, it's gonna get worse.

And now with that thing with the unions in QLD

      Please explain ?

    • i know its call out fee but he didnt do anything plus he wanted $120 in cash and didnt accept anything else sounds like he doesnt want to pay tax

I wouldn't be paying it if he didn't fix anything due to his fault of not having the right tools. Not all plumbers charge a call out fee. It's his responsibility to advise of a call out fee.

If you are forced into paying ask for a tax invoice before any money changes hands, so he has to declare the earnings.

I agree with billybob1978, make sure you definately ask for a tax reciept.
Our tiler wanted cash only and wouldn't provide a tax reciept, so I provided him with a little present

  • Next time use Service Seeking to find a tradie. Never had a problem with tradies since I started using them

    • they register people who don't meet their standards like abn, workers comp insurance, public liability etc.

used one guy who claimed to have all these and lied and ran away promising to come back to give me a receipt from the car.

fair trading nsw will not deal with them.
they will ask you to go to the tribunal.

for this guy tell him you will not pay him.
      i suspect you paid already.
if so tell him you will refer him to fair trading.
cite him for being incompetent and not doing anything, being unprepared to do a job, etc at tribunal.
you may get your money back with costs if you ask for it.

  • It would be unusual for a tradesperson to come out and not charge anything.
Some time spent discussing the issue beforehand may assist in working out what needs to be done.

  • I guess he's entitled to compensation for his time and travel. I would hope that if you get him back there would be no call out fee the next visit.
That's the experience we just had.

Then another problem came up within a week. Got charged a call out fee again - even though was still same job number on the invoice. That didn't impress me.

I reckon if you're paying professional rates, you should expect the expertise to correctly diagnose the problem and give an accurate quote and stand by it.
If the service is less than this, perhaps the rates should be lower accordingly??

Good tradies are hard to find. I hate moving to a new city and having to find new tradies.
