Can we discuss the need for an Adult category? I would love to submit some fantastic deals for the community

Hi Everyone,

I write to you today as an Australian online business owner with hopes of having a fair discussion around having an adult category/feed on the site. I own and operate an online ecommerce site that focuses on selling high quality and 100% bodysafe adult toys and products. Many people do not understand that a lot of toys can be made with toxic chemicals and it is my goal to educate as many people as possible and provide an affordable, high quality range of products so that people can have an improved sex life.

I completely understand this is not for everyone and I am all for protecting minors however I still feel that we could discuss this issue. If it were to open up I would be more than happy to offer many deals to the community, I will not post my website link here as I want to stay on track although I will say that my site was designed to be classy (read: not sleazy at all) and contain no nudity whatsoever.

      Not too sure what you mean? I personally only stock world renowned brands that are known for their quality. I'd rather discuss the adult category itself here though.

      I see what you did there jzx - but more of a snigger than a lol.
      Adultspice - it was a joke - torches are a common bargain here and jzx was tying the idea of a common bargain - flashlights, with your adult category = fleshlights.

    I for one wouldn't mind if there was an option to show or hide it.

    The problem I see that it would mean REPS would need to select the tag that would hide the bargain from the general population.

    It really depends on the product though. At the moment I've seen allowed bargains for contraceptive means, moisturising, lubrication, attire.

    I'm sure it would be useful to some lol

      Thank you for the support, I am all for tagging it correctly and sticking to strict rules. I know it is definitely useful for some as I get customers from all over Australia! I am just looking for more ways to spread the word and promote a healthier and safer sex life!

    I don't see any reason why OzB wouldn't have an adult category. As Ban Slavery says - there have been numerous other deals of an adult flavour.
    I feel the same way I did about the e-cigarettes - not really interested myself but see no reason why others shouldn't find out about good deals.

      That was my thought as well, as it stands based on the rules you can post lingerie as well as other adult/sexual items. I am not interested in having the website flooded with nudity or sleazy products however I would love to be able to post some deals and I don't think anyone should be penalized for a perfectly legal business

        Unfortunately, regardless of what the community wishes in regards to whether 18+ bargains should be posted or not, or made visible only to logged in and age-verified users, Scotty makes the final call as he owns the website.

        As I understand he stands quite firmly on the no NSFW nature of Ozbargain and wishes to keep it as a site that you can safely browse without needing to fear that your peers might know about your purchasing 'habits'.

        I agree with Scotty here, because if my workplace blocks Ozbargain, that's a big loss for me :(

        You may wish to read this thread and then use the TWAM page to discuss things further with the OZB moderators.

          Thank you for posting this, totally agree that the final decision lies with Scotty and I had already read that thread however it was from 2009 so I thought I might be able to spark a discussion to see what others think I would love to use the TWAM page to discuss things further

          Agreed - if my workplace banned Ozbargain I wouldn't know what to do with myself.
          Surely there's a way to make this possible without becoming NSFW?

    It does bring up the issue that people will make jokes… Lots of jokes.

    I can definitely see it getting out of hand but then again, they risk that with the other deals that are somewhat nsfw

    Ozbargain can do wonders for small Aussie businesses and start ups as well as helping Aussies out, if having this option helps these businesses and those niche customers then I support this (although I won't be making any purchases as what you're suggesting doesn't appeal to me).

    @adultspice has requested in TWAM. However I think it would be a good idea for me to reply here as well. The straight answer is NO. I do not think having an adult section here would be beneficial to most of our members. On the other hand looking at the deterioating comments we have whenever there's free condom or lingerie sale, I can't imagine the amount of trolling, flaming & inappropriate remarks we'll be getting here.

    Thank you for replying Scotty, I would hope that if there were an adult section (even if it required a login to access it) that only people who cared about the deals would go to it and not people who were going to just complain etc, could it not be something that gets trialled again for a month?

      Instead of on OzBargain I think it would be better suited for a different site. But that won't be a site that I want to operate. No it won't be trialed here.

    I don't understand the problem against it, this sight is for bargains available to Australians. Weather it be a dildo or eneloops a bargain is still a bargain. We have all bought something we don't need because the price was just to good to resist.

    I do understand that it is a touchy subject and if they were ever to be allowed it would need to be in a closed off section of the site that you must be logged in to view. And that they won't ever show on the front page or newest deals, that they only show in a tab call "NSFW" or something ("NSFW" sounds better than "adults only".

    But that's my opinion and weather we get it or not won't make me love ozbargain any more or any less

      We need to respect Scotty's view and to be honest, the positives aren't overwhelming.

      Maybe Scotty can put some new ideas up for the users to voice their opinions on.
      I personally would like to see some new additions and tagging.

      (Also a feedback type option would be nice for some online stores: particularly electronics which I pay more attention to.)
      Like whether to purchase at Kogan DWI etc
      Store profile maybe? I'm not too sure but overall something to help with choosing a store to buy from

    Ozbargain is valuable to me in part because it is highly controlled in a way that is subjectively good to me (and perhaps other people too). But inevitably there'll be arguments about certain things under such control. I believe this definitely should be allowed, in the interest of neutrality, for logged-in users who choose to see it. Don't know if there's any other independent site that has quality information on them. Such deals could be hidden from user voting and comment history if they select and such if viewed non 18+ enabled accounts too.
