Sony BRAVIA KD65X8500B 65" 4K UHD TV $3,699 @ David Jones (RRP $4,999)

990

Not sure if this is a pricing error or just a really great deal.

This is part of the X85 series, you can find a review of the 55" equivalent here on avforums:
http://www.avforums.com/review/sony-x8505-kd-55-49-65-x8505b…

The panel quality is close to the X90 series, minus the magnetic fluid speakers (which many people don't seem to like)

The cheapest reputable place I could find it on staticice or shopbot that was anywhere close, is Dick Smith selling it for $4499.

This TV is great value for money, because it's currently cheaper than the Samsung (normally cheaper) 65" JBHiFi have.

Would have bought it myself if the missus had of agreed…but I thought the least I could do was post it here.

how long till these drop to the $1000 range?

    • +1

      Probably a few years :p

      • +2

yeah, 2 years time 4k will be the same price as Full HD

    • If you're a yank (Not everyone on ozb is Australian; don't ask me why why they still come here)/don't mind freight forwarding there's a 39" 4k TV. 30Hz at 4k though, but 120Hz below it. $340 too.

      http://www.amazon.com/Seiki-SE39UY04-39-Inch-Ultra-120Hz/dp/…

    • My guess, 2 years.

    • "how long till these drop to the $1000 range?"

probably when they are two or three generations superceded. But that means that it is not the latest and greatest.

    Great first post

First time poster so let me know if I need to change anything.

Just remove this part and it will be perfect.

For those who don't understand 4:2:0
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JYZDnenaGc

      • Cheers for the link. Is only 4:2:0 normal for this price point? Blu-Ray (1080p) movies are 4:2:0 right? For the other "video signals" for this TV that do not inlcude YCbCr info, can it be assumed they are 4:2:2 or 4:4:4?

      • +1

        http://www.anandtech.com/show/8191/nvidia-kepler-cards-get-h…

This is what those video modes mean - eg it's a hack to squash 4k/60fps data down a plain old HDMI 1.4 port. It's not real HDMI 2.0 performance, since the datarates necessary need chips that don't exist yet.

Personally, I'd wait - for the prices to come down, the bandwidth to go up, and the content to be available.

        • Virtually all consumer video formats and codecs are 4:2:0 — DVD, Blu-Ray, DVB… MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC…not to mention JPEG images.

Something to think about for PC monitor use but it's a complete non issue for video content.

        • I would like to use one as a monitor. Are there any 65"+ 4K TVs with 4:4:4?

  • Nice price! A better buy than that one with the fluid speakers by far if you are hooking it up to external amp/speakers. Never mind the lack of 4k content, the pq is, going by reviews, pretty good when upscaling lower resolution stuff. It's a decent price for any decent 65" telly anyway!

  • +1

I feel that this must be a pricing error - it's not listed as being On Sale. Get in quick if you want one!

  • +6

Given the lack of content I still couldn't call any 4K "great value for money" but it's certainly a good price given the RRP/other stores prices and its size.

Supports Netflix 4K (if you have Telstra Cable or NBN and can sustain 25Mbps internationally), supports HDMI 2.0 for 4K@60Hz, lowest input lag in its class (average for an HDTV, great for a 4K) and pretty stellar upscaling performance anyway.

    • Agreed, I can't see any reason to buy one other than computer use ATM.

    • +1

So you can use your monthly quota on one film? Telstra cable is great, but there is no unlimited plan.

      • TPG now has unlimited NBN plan for $90/month. Not sure about the speed though.

    • Where did you find info about the input lag? In the past I've had to trawl through AV forums with limited success.

i paid $3500 for my 50" PANASONIC plasma just 5 yrs ago in 2009.

now for the same price we have 65" —CURVED— & 4K TV's for roughly the same price point.

where will we be in the year 2019?!

i've +1'd ur submission, nice work.

    • Why is this the benchmark?
I paid $500 for the LG 50 inch Full HD plasma that is still really good from a ozbargain deal about three years ago now.

  • -7

"This TV is great value for money" - really - regardless of $$$ off you're "saving" you're still spending $3700 on a TV.

    • +10

I'd never buy a cheap TV again, the amount of time you spend on it you'd might as well enjoy the best out of it.

    • Regardless of $$$ you're spending you're still saving 25%/$1,300 (off RRP) on a great TV.

    • +1

It's kinda like if you had a new Ferrari for half price guy. It's terrible value for money. Unless you want a Ferrari.

  • +4

Meh just like 3D, not enough content in 4K to justify getting this.

    • Apparently upscaling on this is quite good, but I do know what you mean.

At least you'll be ready when 4K Blu-ray comes out.

And it's reassuring that the broadcast standard had been finalized though: http://www.avforums.com/news/dvb-broadcast-standards-agreed-…

    • Agree with 4K content but there are 100's of 3D movies available. 3D is also something niche to enjoy on certain types of movies. Whereas a higher res, could and should be available for everything.

But in saying that, the upscaling on this is brilliant. For games at least.

      • As Phreakuency has said, 3D is a niche, alternative choice. 4k is a logical progression!

With upscaling: Would a native 1080p panel not be better at displaying 1080p content than the best up-saling 4k panel/device?

        • At 65 inch upscaled 4k could be better than native 1080p.

  • Seriously considering this to go with my new DVDs https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/156072

    DJ's also have Sony Kdl70w850b for $2,904.00 http://goo.gl/d7VI5h
Excellent price for one of the best 1080p LED's for sale at the moment.

  • Good guys should beat price by %120 of difference so ..
    4496 - 3699 = 797
    20% * 797 = 159.40
    3699 - 159.40 = 3539.6 !?!

Seems DJs are having a bit of an unadvertised sale on TVs, price on the 50w800b is over $100 cheaper than anywhere else at the moment as well

    • +1

I'm guessing higibo downloaded this deal with all that maths knowledge
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/156089

    • No.. To get the 120% difference you will need to buy the TV at their normal price and then return showing them the cheaper sale.. At the store they will only price match if they get the managers ok.

      And your maths wrong

      • +1

        http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buyonline/content/Price_Guaran…

Under I have yet to purchase but have found a lower price..

"In the unlikely event that you see a lower advertised price by local competitor*, for product we stock prior to purchasing from us, we will beat that price to maintain our Lowest Price policy. Please take a copy of the advertisement with you in store when completing your purchase."

Where have I gone wrong in the maths ?

        • I don't believe you have, maths looks fine to me.

Doing it a slightly different way - the difference is 797 and multiplied by 1.2 that's 956.40, take that off TGG's original price of 4496 and I get 3539.60 which is the same as what you got.

Okay, I've just seen the post below showing both methods…

      • +1

And hope they don't give you excuses like it's under our cost price.

    • I think your calculation is wrong.

The final price is price at good guys-120% price difference.

      • +2

        That's the same thing.

Applying 120% of the difference to GGs is the same as applying 20% to the DJs price (the other 100%).

        4496 - 797 x 1.2 = 3539.60
        3699 - 797 x 0.2 = 3539.60

  • How do the new style curved UHD compare to a normal UHD TV

    Is curved ones better?

    • +2

Go to a Dick Smith or JB window and you'll see the curved TV's. I think they are horrible but it's probably a personal preference thing.

    • +1

Not according to the tests on CNET - they say its gimmicky and in some instances worse than flat (e.g.: off axis viewing)
At normal viewing distances, 84" is the BARE MINIMUM to get benefit of 4K

      • -1

Just read that OLED are only 1080p, hear I'm thinking they are 4k too

Be nice to have a 4k OLED TV

      • -1

That's completely wrong, and I am tired of seeing it. You do not need to be able to discern individual pixels to see a sharpness benefit, our eyes just do not work that way. Don't believe me though, go into a shop and look at 720p or 1080i content upscaled on a 55" 4k TV from 8 feet away compared to the same brand's top 1080 TV, and if you can't see the benefit your eyes are the problem not the tech.

    • +3

I don't see the need for curved TVs. They should make curved computer monitors. That's where this technology is needed. A curved TV limits the viewing angle…

  • Yer I have seen them but just wondering if they are better

    Sony don't make one

  • Good price on the 55" Samsung too: http://shop.davidjones.com.au/djs/en/davidjones/55-uhd-led-u…
If you wanna save $1000 and still get all the features, the Samsung 55hu7500 just got 5 stars from whatHIFI beating the sony 55x850b at 4 stars. And this Sammy is the next model up..
I still have a preference for Sony TV's after owning a few Samsungs, they always seem to struggle with user friendliness.
All that being said a grand for an extra 10 inches of viewing pleasure makes this TV an incredible purchase, good spotting OP!

  • I've sat in front of 4k TVs at various shops and they are totally beautiful. But to get full advantage of the extra pixels you do have to sit closer. According to this:

    Does 4K Resolution Matter?

For a 65" ultra HD TV you have to sit 4 feet from it to get all the resolution. For an 80" TV the figure is 5 feet.

    • -1

So because somebody tells you you're not getting the benefit you'd believe him over your own eyes?* It's pretty clear to mine that at 6ft+ I can clearly see the difference in the UHD upscaled compared to HD (and the salesman was trying to sell me on the HD not the UHD!).

The idea that you need to see the pixels to see the benefit is wrong, and is in fact almost the opposite, and is vastly over simplified on how our eyes perceive things. Not only that, due to chroma compression (4:2:0), see linked video above to understand it, 1080p is not 1080 in chroma terms, it's 1/2 of that and a huge reason upscaling can look so much better.

Regardless of whether you believe me, trust your own eyes not what someone tells you.

      • his calculator says I can't discern a pixel on 1080 from over 6 feet, so I tried that on my HTPC 46" 5yo Samsung placing a single white pixel on the screen, double checking with my macro lens that indeed it was a single pixel, and I could see it clearly from 15 feet away in the daylight which is about as far as I can be from it. On my 1440p monitor 10ft it's pretty clear still and at 12ft it's getting hard.
  • +5

Curved screens and 4k UHD are both just marketing fluff to sell more panels until OLED becomes mainstream or affordable in 2-3 years. It's still an LCD panel, which at the end of the day is old tech with major flaws that will never be fixed. Flaws that still see plasma the superior panel.

Spending a lot on LCD technology at his point simply isn't worth it. Companies are fluffing them up with 3D, 4k, UHD to tread water. Try and get your hands on the last Plasmas or wait.

Is shipping supposed to be free? I went as far as the payment page (including my postcode and addy etc), and shipping still saying $0.00?

    • The Delivery Details tab says Standard shipping free from $50

      • Is that after paying? I'm up the page where you enter credit card details, and it still says " Delivery: $0.00" (and I'm in Cairns!)

        • +1

The Delivery tab I was talking about is in the product description. It should be free delivery nation wide.

  • +2

my 65" plasma was $1400 and even when 4k falls to $1000 i wouldn't bother upgrading. 1080 is so sharp already and i stop pixel peeping after a few weeks.

  • +1

    waste of money.

    edit: Complete waste of money

    • Yeah, but still nice.

    • Agreed. I love my tv, but why youd spend $3700 on a depreciating asset when entry models are a tenth of that and mid range models (which lets be honest youd be pressed to tell the difference between) are less than a third of the price escapes me.

Then again I don't understand how $100k family sedans sell either…

  • Bugger, won't fit inside my toilet!

  • What is the better buy, this sony TV or Samsung F9000 65". Samsung available with goodguys for 3789$ ticket price (without any negotiations).
