    Except that the PWYW one is the old game, and the other one is the new recent game with much better graphics and higher system requirements.
    You have to compare like and like, not apples and chocolate.
    Next time check first?

  if one were to describe in one sentence why the thief remake was received so poorly, what would it be?

    "Drawer Opening Simulator" - Running around thieving mundane objects such as silverware, pens, etc. and knocking people out with a Blackjack can only be so interesting. Personally I didn't enjoy it very much but can't quite explain why as I have no frame of reference (haven't played the original). To me it just felt a bit "boring" in general. That being said I haven't played the whole way through, so maybe it gets more interesting later on?

    One good thing to say about it is the graphics are pretty nice :)
