Country Japan really is another world. I hitchhike & am treated so wonderfully. The gifts can be embarrassing, like $200 when I was picked up by tour guides in training who showed & paid for everything for 2 days. After weeks speaking no English in rural areas, I often struggle to find the words. Korea is great & food wonderful. Locals sometimes pay for my meals, when they see me order & enjoy what they eat ;-)
A major cultural difference I notice (from an Australian perspective) is Japanese people are far too polite & respectful, whereas the Koreans are far too forthright in telling you what they think. (like a stranger walking past, embarrassing me in front of a woman I was seeing, saying to her I was fat! No Korean I talked with saw anything wrong, rather that the stranger was concerned for my health.) It took a long time before a Japanese rice farmer friend referred to my weight, naked in the Onsen (spa). Difference is the interesting part of travel.
So you are probably correct - Korea is a bit easier as it's more like home. Maybe that's why I keep going back to Japan, to immerse in a very different culture to my own. Interesting, KT.
