Samsung Portable Battery 9,000mAh - $56 @ Costco (Membership Required)

120

Apparently more than 40% discount from Samsung RRP, LOL.

The Samsung USB Portable Battery Pack is the perfect power supply accessory for smartphone and tablet users that are always on the go but are sometime unable to access a power outlet to charge their devices. Simply connect your smartphone or tablet in to the battery pack using the accompanying USB cable and you are set: no outlet needed. The Samsung Universal USB Extended Battery Pack can store up to 9,000mAh of power, enough to charge up to three smartphones and one tablet device.

PS: I went to Costco and saw this, I think the price is either 56 or 54 or 51 but i find it quite reasonable. Must admit you can get one like half price for a generic brand on ebay or elsewhere. However with the recent incidents in unsafe charger, makes you wonder would the dodgy battery blow up when charging? If You willing to pay $30 sth for charging cable, then this battery does worth the money. Im not saying this is cheapest portable battery out there, but for a reputable brand, it's reasonable.

Cheers,

Comments away.

I can buy two romoss with this price… which also uses samsung cells…

Purportedly, you don't know till you rip it open

      • There are a few visual comparison checks you can do first online. I was also very hesitant before purchasing this xiami deal : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/144173 But after doing some research and taking a risk ( nothing stopping the store to get different stock from new source ), but all good with a top product.

    • Can't say I'm happy with my Romoss (definitely genuine, bought from Scorptec). It self-discharges something chronic if i don't use it for even a few days and even though it's capacity is almost double my tablet capacity it can just barely give my tablet a single full charge!

      • The internal batteries in these are 3.7V, outputting at ~5V, naturally there's some mAh lost in the conversion :)

      • it may be worth querying Romoss (or scorptec) on that one.

using samsung cells doesn't mean it is safe though.
Quite alot of them use Lithium Ion which doesn't have protected circuitry on the battery.

So the manufacturer builds in those safety protections onto the circuit board that charges the battery. However in China everything goes, if you want to cost cut, then the first thing is to take away some safety features.

My Sony one I got when it was pricing error at $29 works REALLY good, self discharge is slow / unnoticable.

      • 100% agree with lplau.

I'm not saying the Romoss is a bad product, because I have never seen or used one before.
But some of the cost cutting by factories would be the removal of these extra safety protections.
Unless these battery packs need safety testing and certification in Australia, they are not required to have them and we cannot tell without opening one up and analysing them.

Another popular thing that sub-factories do is buy the rejected items from other main factories.
So even though it is a Samsung battery cell, we don't know if they are factory rejected ones or not.
(I don't mean that Romoss do that)

I don't have this exact Samsung battery pack, but I have another battery pack with a Samsung cell and the discharge is very very slow.
I can fully charge it and leave it for a couple of weeks and there are no issues with discharge.

      • Plenty of cells with "Samsung" written on them if that is what it takes to make you part with your money.
        Writing/branding = nothing in China.
Have seen individual transistors sanded and re-branded then sold as slightly more expensive ones. Personally spent hours and hours running them through parameter tests to prove they were fakes.
        Anything goes.

  • meritline have the romoss on sale at the moment with a code, but i deleted the email… :(

    around $26 for 10,400mAh

  • I got 30,000mAh from singapore while I were there for holiday for $31.

    • +1

did you see any 300,000mAh ones there ???

      • +2

You can never have enough back up power, just in case the car battery runs flat.

    • Unless the 30,000mAh is fake, the size of this battery would be massive to stored that much capacity.

  • Fasttech has now begun stocking Xiaomi powerbanks. Its half the cost of most other reliable powerbanks and you dont have to risk ebay fakes.

    http://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10009006/1796900-authenti…

    • And we know that Fasttech ones are definitly authentic? Just because they say they are then it must be auth.

I have come to learn that Chinese Cheap = You are definitly missing something, or something is wrong with it.
I am asian and I know this is 99% of the case.

You can get a "AUTHENTIC" BMW over there for half price. Then when you open the bonnet, it is all cheap replaced stuff. It technically is authentic…. the chassis they mean!

    • If you order one, you could check for authenticity based on this thread:

      http://en.miui.com/thread-19104-1-1.html

And this security code checking facility:

      http://order.mi.com/service/dyscode

      • Lol, who said they can't dupe the security code?… in China you can dupe anything!

        Also according to that thread:
Please take note of the danger of using Fake Xiaomi Power Bank!
DO NOT BUY FROM ANY OTHER SITE ( Except official XiaoMi Website! )
Xiaomi does not have distrrbutors or resellers!

Therefore you still cannot be 100% sure that they are legit, since according to that there is no distributors or resellers.

        • I'm sure they can. The same way that any lock can be picked.

But if the outside looks legit, you open it up and the guts look legit and the security code checks out then there's a reasonable amount of assurance that it may be the real thing. There's no guarantees but with sufficient assurance I can take a risk on a $20 purchase.

  • Hey op - which Costco did you see this at?

    • They were available at Auburn - Sydney.

I think I also noticed they don't output 2.1A (for the iPad) so people wanting it for the iPad should double check first. Should still be able to charge it up albeit a bit slower.

  • Good price.

However if people were willing to spend a bit more you can get an Anker 12,000mah from ebay. I bought one because it can charge 3 devices and total output of 4A, device itself can also be charged at 2A which needs to be considered otherwise it will take a long time to charge the device. Realistically it has a capacity of around 10,000-10,500mah.

Sold by Anker, around $60AUD delivered.
