Do yourself a favour and spend that little bit extra on good quality beans. Even if that means paying $30 for 1 kg of freshly roasted beans from a local coffee store that specialises in roasting, you will not regret the purchase and your coffees in the morning will be so much better. Even Cosmorex brand is better than anything you can buy in the supermarket. You don't know how long it's been in storage for and if they're selling it for this cheap then odds are it could have been there for months…..
If you're after cheap then forget I posted anything :).
I've bought my share of beans from speciality coffee stores, but I actually prefer this Vittoria stuff regardless of price. And at $1.80/100g, it's remarkable value.
But pity the wretched soul who grew and harvested the beans at that price point :/
After being told that the beans can be on shelves for months on end by my housemate who used to work in Woolies, i've become a bit wary of Supermarket stuff.
If it was fresher (less than 1 month since roasted) then i'll probably find it nicer and it would cater to my coffee snob needs.
Can't argue against the value of this deal though.
I quite like this brand and as an Aussie company their quality and roasting im sure is top notch.
Agreed. It won't get you points on the coffee snobbery circuit, but I reckon it's a great drop. Thanks for posting. Really hoping they'll do the discount on their organic range one day, it's the only one I haven't tried yet.
I believe their organic beans is on special at woolworths at the moment. I bought it the other day for $20 (about half price). Haven't tried it yet but get in quick, I think deal ends today.
The only problem with buying it from Coles is that it can be old stale stock… To get the freshest roast out of the lot check the used by date and work backward a year to see when it was roasted.
Good point, I do that with most products :)
In some cases they can be up to 2 years old. I had a look at the batch number at the bottom of the bag of some Lavazza beans when they were on sale at Coles for 1/2 price, and whilst they still had a few months left on the 'best before' date, the batch number suggested they were bagged almost 2 years prior.
For espresso machines you've lost a lot of rich flavour, aroma and crema after 3-4 weeks from roast. After a few months the beans would be all dried out, smelling all musty, and not like fresh coffee at all.
For percolators/drippers and for people that have 1/2 a litre of milk with their coffee and drink from a soup bowl you can get away with beans that are a few months old. If you're used to and happy with Vitorria and Lavazza then this is a good deal.
But once you've tried freshly roast beans it's hard to go back to stale and musty beans regardless of how cheap they are.
That would be because of staff negligence and not rotating stock.
Coffee is long life, staff either aren't required or trained to rotate most things in that section.
Random date checks would be the only reason old stock is found.
I find their beans overly oily.
I'd rather go for the aldi beans at 1kg for $11.90 if i'm going to get such unfresh beans.
I'm not a coffee snob at all (will happily drink instant and quite like Harris ground coffee) but my god do I think Vittoria coffee tastes like shit. It just tastes… Stale :S
That means you'll now only pay 3 times what they are worth.
