Where to sell a Brand New iPad 4th Gen

Hi Guys,

I have just been given a brand new iPad which I don't need.
It's going to cost me so I'm not about to give it away so I'm wondering where the best place to sell it is?

Do I go to gumtree and try to sell it there, ebay with it's 9.9% fees (which I'd prefer not to givn the costs) or somewhere like overclockers AU?

I did put it up on Gumtree over the weekend and got an offer of $400 for it which is close to what I'm to pay for it so I'd ideally like to sell it for around $500 - after fees.

Any suggestions?

How do you get "given" an ipad but its going to cost you?

There is an Ad functionality on OzBargain, but dont expect top dollar from this community.

  • The Boss asked if I wanted a cheap iPad that I should be able to sell.

I said Yes as the price was very competitive.

  • expecting to clear $500 sounds a lot for 16gb wifi model.

  • +4

Which model is it? I.e. size and cellular?

If it's just 16 GB with Wifi, I'd say $400 is a pretty good offer considering you can get a new Air for just a bit more.

Edit: Damn derelict stole my thunder!

  • It's the 32Gb Wifi model in Black.

Gumtree is showing them for between $490 and $600 depending on where you live.

yes thats why they are still there at that price and not sold yet.
just be reasonable dont expect too much profit, or you can hold with your offer, put nice pictures and cross fingers.
from my experience, longer you wait the value will be less. new offers coming will be more painful to hear too.

      also:
buyers at gumtree know why you dont go to ebay, because you dont want to pay $xx fees. so those buyers will deduct $xx from your sale price. simple as that.
you want to give that $xx to ebay or to the buyer? :D

      • you can sell it on Ozbargain classified

  • If it's been given to you, it costs you nothing

    A couple of things:
A: It hasn't been given to me. I've bought it at a reduced cost which is what the Boss bought it at.
He bought it for me at a reduced cost figuring I could resell it and make some extra dough…. He's good like that.

    B: I've had 1 offer from GT @ $400 given I've seen them selling off ebay @ $550 I figured $500 was a reasonable figure.
I'm not greedy, but I am fairly broke. If I can make $100-$200 from it, that pays for groceries for a week/2.

    • Nice boss, but you have to wonder where he got it from so cheap that he could pass it on to you and you could still make money on it while still offering a fair discount off RRP.

      • He picked it up from Big W @ Warringah Mall where they were selling them @ stupid prices last Friday.

He bought 3 of them. One for him and one each for me and my co worker.

Said there was a crazy line and he could only get 3.

        • +17

i was at the line and didn't see your boss.

        • @jubba: Lol

    • +1

Reply to the offers on GT offering them $420-450 and you should be able to make a profit.

If you are fairly broke you'd be wiser to ask your boss for more shifts/more work/more pay than try to flog things online when you clearly have no idea what you are doing judging by this post and your initial description.

They were $475 refurb on the Apple store with free delivery.

Gumtree is home to cheapest of the cheap and/or scammers. Good luck buddy.

  • +14

advise: dont sell apple stuffs on GT especially first timer.

    you list $500 you get:
17 email replies with $300-350 offer
3 sms at night: "mate i offer $200 thats what i have in my pocket"
4 phone calls : this is for my wife please please sell to me $400"
    result:
heart broken, time wasting, hatred, frustrations,\

Don't forget about the 3 no shows with the offer to purchase at the full listed price - but you have to wait for 3-4 days.

    • +1

@erwinsie :: so true mate… trying to sell my iphone5s gold which i bought off kogan and the offers are pathetic from gumtree…

    • Yes it is sad but do you know of any better sites that lets you sell without exorbitant fees?

      • I just sold my 5S that I listed last night, no hassles

    • Not exactly. You've got to be peace in mind to face different people. I once placed an ad on GT for my car (luxury used car), asking for 5k. Then some moron offered $50. Did I need to be pissed off? Of cause, I might have fxxked him in my mind. No need to be frustrated and upset. For the OP, I would not suggest you to profit from such low margin deals. What's the point to spend so much of your time to profit less than 100 bucks? unless you want to practise your selling skill.

    • I always try gumtree first and see how I go.

I put up a Nikon D3200 on Saturday morning, and it was sold later that night.

    • +1

I do quite enjoy sending sarcastic or p1ss taking responses to low offers though.

    • i tried to sell an iPhone 5 still shrink wrapped and either people can't read, are blind or are retarded and they all said "oh i thought it was a 5s"

even then they tried to low ball and buy it for like $400 cause they could pay "right now" even though listed was 600

    • +1

lol 3 sms at night: "mate i offer $200 thats what i have in my pocket" spot on mate

  • So where do you guys suggest I sell it?

    • +2

You could try eBay still. I've sold items on there by potential sellers contacting me via message and offering COD pickup outside of the eBay website. This has saved me giving $$$ to eBay.

I also list stuff I'm selling on the classified section of my internet providers website.

You can also list items for sale on here in the appropriate section.

  • I've listed it here @ $500 in the Electronics section as well as GT for $550.
I put a post on Whirlpool asking where to sell it but a Mod has removed it as I was selling it.

    • +1

      dont try on whirlpool lol

its ok to sell other things on GT but for very popular items like apple stuffs you will get tons of low ballers unless you really want to sell cheap (read: little or no profit)

Sounds like your boss bought them to resell himself, realised that the resale margins were razor thing and not worth the time and effort of dealing with people and has palmed at least one of them off on you.

  • -3

Actually he saw them on special bought 1 for himself for his use, and called to ask my coworker and myself if he should pick one up for us too.

We both said yes. My coworker as he wanted 1 for himself and me to resell. If I'd been over at Big W and saw them I would have bought it myself.

    • Fair enough, good thought but doesn't always work out.

  • +1

Unfortunately even with the high fees, eBay does seem like the easiest and best way to sell things.

    Ask broden

With eBay these days taking their significant cut (and then some) and all the cheapos on Gumtree, flipping anything for a decent profit isn't as easy as it sounds. You won't get $560+ for it on eBay in order to clear close to $500, it might be easier just to take it back to BigW for a refund. Hardly worth the risk on a pricey item to earn $30 or so. There are very few ways to sell easily for free, you have to take a hit. Either deal with the jokers on Gumtree or pay the fees to eBay to make things smoother.

Hehe, maybe your boss just wanted credit card points? Or a sweet tax deduction? It doesn't sound like you got it that insanely cheap, but who knows, you haven't confirmed what you actually paid for it so it's hard to calculate what profit margin is realistic given your options.

  • +2

There were heaps of deals for dick smith for airs around $400-500…

4th gen I wouldn't want to pay more than that..

  • +1

$500 after fees is a pipe dream, you are better off aiming for around $400-450 as that is a realistic price it will sell for.

  • +5

i can give you three french kisses with my virgin lips for the Ipad

    • +1

Your lips may be virgin, but where has that tongue been?

  • +4

    $50

    Ha ha

  • I would just take whatever profit you can made quickly.
    Profit is a profit.
If you can get it a cheap price from Big W, you would have to expect someone would be able to do the same.
The longer you hold on to it, the more stocks on the market at cheaper price and you have more competition
at the same time you are wasting your own time as well, time is money.

  • $200

  • Lol. I've had offers of $400 off gumtree but a friend's client is looking at $500 for it which will hopefully happen today.

She just needed to work out how to tether it from her AMAYSIM iphone. (SMS TETHER to 568 in case you need to know)
I've found that out for her and just waiting on a callback from her.

    • +4

I reckon she is an idiot to pay 500 dollars to a private seller for this model.

      • +5

I guess the OP did get lucky, most of the time reselling a bargain to make money is a terrible idea.

        • +4

especially in the case of not doing any homework about the resellability before buying so-called bargain

  • +2

    It's been sold for $400.
Given I paid $300 for it, it's a win. I was just hoping/expecting a little more given the prices on gumtree/ebay.
