How do I quote part of a previous comment, in my comment?

I have two questions:

  1. How do I quote part of a previous comment, in my comment? At the moment I'm just cut/pasting, but I note that there's some way to do it that renders the quote instantly recognisable at a glance as being a quote (little orange bar down the left-hand side of it).

  2. Where on the site would I find such information? I did attempt to prior to posting this question, (I looked in the "Site Discussion" section of the "forums"), but to no avail.

Sorry if it's somewhere obvious, I have been known to miss things that were right in front of me!

  • Whenever you post something, keep an eye on text "Formatting Help" which appears just above "Preview comment" button. Click "Formatting help" and it'll have answer to all your formatting questions. Play around with it and then click "preview comment" to see how does it look like after formatting. If looks good then press "Post comment"…

  • Just put > at the beginning of the line you want to quote. Other characters work too. This is part of the Markdown syntax. There's a Formatting Help link for that.

  • Yes, in the formatting help in the commenting box but also on the help page at the bottom of each page.

  • Ah I see now, thank you kindly all.
