Thanks for the info, is there an offline navigation app you would recommend?
There are no generic offline navigation apps other than the GPS apps like Tomtom. In those cases you also need to purchase the maps for each area.
With this app you do get real time indication of where you are, if your device has GPS they just cant provide in advance steps like turn by turn.
I used this app when in Japan on the train so I could track where I was and then know which stop to exit the train (Although it didnt work on underground stations due to GPS limits)
The latest version of Google Maps (for IOS and more than likely for Android) supports offline mode:
"Pull up the place info sheet that appears at the bottom of your device screen and touch Save map to use offline to save the selected area of the map."
Not sure how much of the map it pulls down so the navigation may be limited. Give it a try anyway.
City Maps to Go has the Points and Interest and other info that can be downloaded for offline use. Can recommend it if Google Maps doesn't do it for you.
I tried the offline maps for google, but unless you have net access, you can't get directions (kinda like city maps 2 go).
I think TomTom is the way to go
@Gorian4: Not only do you not receive directions but pressing on any named places has no details to show
Skobbler. Co pilot. Navfree. Route 66. Be on road
I use skobbler when I have no reception. Poi isn't too good but it works
osmand. It has points of interest, search, directions, bookmarks and pretty much anything else you would want in a offline map app. Plus it's free and has unlimited map downloads (via the web).
This app was great. Needed it so many times in Brazil which has some shitty phone netowrks. just made sure I downloaded the maps when I was on wifi and we were set.
The Android version also has free upgrade to pro today:
NOW FREE; Today this version offers the full functionality of the City Maps2Go Pro version

I used this in the USA it was great for knowing what way to go. I also used it for the wiki guide lots of info without the internet.
Only allows 4 download maps despite getting it on the day this was posted?
it doesn't use mobile data (so yay if you're capped)
but you do need to download the maps beforehand (covers a pretty extensive area, but if you're travelling to somewhere that you don't have, tough luck)
and it doesn't provide directions (only a street view of the area), but does link to wikipedia (or whatever) for reviews of places
pretty good app for finding out where you are (or if that road you're currently on links up to wherever) but don't use it for directions
