Projectors are so last century now that LCD and LED panels are dirt cheap. No need to darken the room, no noisy fans, no need to find a pair of speakers or a blank wall/screen and no ongoing maintenance costs. Why would you bother? Many office projectors are being replaced with panels for these exact reasons.

They should be giving these away like printers with the price of replacement bulbs!

Yeah, but where could you find a 100 inch LCD or LED monitor for less than 900$ ?

      • +7

        or a 150" lcd screen?

You've obviously never seen a 1080P projector in full swing! You won't hear the fan, because it gets drowned out by 5.1 or 7.1 sound. And these are definitely 21st century tech. I've never had a problem with external lighting ruining the PQ. Go to a AV store and check em out, you might be surprised. As for no need for speakers with your LED/LCD TV…might be ok watching the news, but a movie….naaahhhh

For everyday viewing, gaming and sport event watching, I'd agree - stick with a TV. In small boardrooms / offices, I'd also agree (given how long some of those projectors are on for, and how low light output is - TV's pay for themselves rather quickly).

I do have a projector in my living room, the Projector is only set to do about 80" (can go up to 100" but any bigger and it hurts to watch - eye strain etc… moving into a new home soon which does have a larger living room, so I'll be pushing a 120" screen soon). I don't know, perhaps it's just me, but I like the warmth / feeling the projector gives over the TV for movies. But I also like to darken the room to watch movies and the TV's brightness can be distracting, even when you turn it down. I've only got a little Dell LED projector (720p), this Epson is certainly in the right price range to consider upgrading (to 1080p and increase in brightness to handle the 120").

Each to their own of course.

At large screen sizes, projectors are way better bang-for-buck.

If you mostly just watch dancing with the stars, sure, a TV only is OK, but if you're at all into film or cinematic gaming, projectors are far superior in almost every respect.

Even colour tone during daytime, their biggest weakness compared to TVs, is hardly an issue these days, with the cheapest models pushing 2000 lumens. Closing the curtains will give you a great image in most rooms.

The truth is most people still buy huge TVs because they want to "keep up with the Joneses" and show off to their friends, not because they want a better viewing experience. Projectors still hold that crown.

        ^^^Agree!^^^

Plus you can't beat bezel-less projector eyefinity! :D

  • This is seems like good value. For cinema & 3D this is the way to go IMO. I don't know about this model but my EH-TW6000 costing over $2K over 2 years ago, has been great. It produces very smooth full HD that seems free of pixel/scaling that can be apparent on flat screen TVs (I have a 2010 58" Samsung plasma for instant, daytime and TV watching) and no reflection without a glass panel. It also produces zero 3D crosstalk/ghosting! Half the light is lost viewing through 3D glasses so it pumps up the brightness to compensate and also increases fan noise. That is the only niggle I found about it. It is rated brighter and quieter than the EH-TW5200 but the replacement lamps appear to be more expensive too. For me, I am kind of fussy about these things, I'd want to either see it in action and/or have a good return policy to avoid disappointment. I did that with a budget DLP a projector from Officeworks and was very glad to be able to return it.

Hint: If/when looking for reviews, Epson appears to use very different names for similar looking models of projectors in different markets/countries. I think this one looks very similar in appearance to the PowerLite Home Cinema 2030 Projector in the USA.

  • Well with Costco's return policy you couldn't go wrong. I have the Epson TW-2000 and it is still going strong, been through one lamp onto my second soon.

    • Unsure on their return policy though, can't see it on their website. Seems to be all hearsay ?
      Can anyone comment?

      • I returned some food I'd opened. They didn't look at it, or even ask for a receipt, just immediately handed me a full refund in cash.

      • From http://costco.com.au/Common/PrivilegesAndConditions.shtml -

On Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell, and will refund your purchase price. This is in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

Basically this means you can return anything at any time. We have returned partly eaten food, clothes that were the wrong size, pillows that were tested for 1 night among other items and never been challenged. They do ask for a reason so they can code it in their system.

  • An alternative to Costco is a factory second directly from Epson for $799 with free delivery and a six month warranty (https://www.epson.com.au/shoponline/shop/DisplayProduct.asp?…).

The definition of a 'factory second' can be found here (https://www.epson.com.au/shoponline/seconds.asp).

It's worth checking their website from time to time for carton damaged and factory second projectors. I've seen the higher end models selling for crazy low prices compared to new. It depends on your tolerance of potentially small cosmetic blemishes. Personally, I have no issue with it.
