  • What is the battery life like?

    • 70-80 minutes

      • -2

I find that hard to believe, these cheapo cameras have a capacitor instead of a battery. That will last 5 mins tops.

        • if you look at the last pic on the page, it shows a BL-5C type battery. theoretically that means you can run the camera without plugging it into your car's socket for at least 5 minutes.

(unless, of course, they send you something completely different that doesn't match item description)

i've achieved run times of around 3 hours with a genuine DVR-027 dashcam and fully-charged authentic nokia bl-5c battery.

          @tdw: 70 -80 minutes!!! You are dreaming… I have one, 3 minutes most.
Camera is "ok" one of the lowest level, but iyt does the work with limitations.

        • @Sabric:

          that's why i don't recommend these knock-off dvr-027's…it's too hit & miss ;)

the real one is only $60 US and a lot more reliable.

        • +1

@Sabric: Are you sure you didn't have the settings wrong and it was automatically set to turn off after 3 minutes of being unplugged? Sounds dubious. I've always had at least an hour of not-plugged-in out of these things.

from the video you can't even read the number plate of the car in front or any signs

on a side note they've got nice bus stops in america. they would be all smashed if we have them in australia

    • Good enough for 16 bucks. clear enough to prove your position in an accident.

on a side note - I've seen some bus stops get smashed in days every time they replace the glasses. The idiots who smash them don't pay for them but everybody else who work hard are paying for them.

  • Do yourself a favour and get a 0803 Mini

    • +2

tell everyone here how much the 0803 Mini is and tell yourself the one posted here is only $15.99.

      • -2

GPS, G sensor, real HD, readable number plates and very good low light vs a sensor that probably is only 240p interpolating to "960p" and none of the features.

it is really a waste of money

        • +1

Look at it this way. This is doing what it can do for $15.99 and there are ppl who can't or don't want to spend too much for a dash cam. Now they too have an option to have a working camera for cheap. Obviously not the best camera. For the price this is a very good deal.

Own a car but can't afford a good dashcam..

I guess those are the same people who drive around without any insurance

        • +2

          @storyteller:
No - we are the ones with third party property, struggling to get by day to day and afford stuff like food and medicine on a disabled pension, who need a car far more than you do so we sacrifice to have it, or any sort of dashcam in case something happens, precisely because we cant afford to comp our own cars but they are the only way we can get out of our house because walking isnt an option.

          Wake up!

  • Erm… that video appears to have been shot in the DAYTIME. Sorry to 'request the obvious', but can we please see a video taken by this 'Night Vision' cam at night?

    • +2

Night Will be a heap of poo at this price, who cares though.
16 bux to prove YOU were stationary and someone hit you…..awesome.
16 bux to prove those lights hit YOU…not you hit them….
16bux to prove your position on the road relative to the b double that merged into you….

      Just buy the thing….
Want rear coverage also, buy two….
At this price they should be compulsary in cars

I have a $100 one, its crap at night but good enough to convince the idiot that reversed into me's insurznce that they can politley go, jump. The night time footage was good enough.
Had there been no footage, it would be to the insurance a clear cut rear ender , my fault.

16 bux to save your $500+ excess on an each bear own claim….

      • you'll be wishing you paid a little more when the car drives off and you can't identify it

        • +3

Youll be wishing you had A camera, any camera.
A lot of people cant afford expensive stuff, EVERYONE can afford this and considering most people do most driving hours during the day commuting (citation needed), its a no brainer.

Heck, daytime coverage is good so for 75% of people that drive during the daylight 75% of the time, its a winner.

Even if you look at it as night and day. For 16 bux you have 'insurance' for 1/2 of the hours in a year.12 hours a day. If you assume the average person sleeps 8 hours then thats no coverage for an average person for just four hours a day.

For 16 bux, most people cover most of the hours driven anway,

          Its good enough

        • +1

you'll be wishing you paid a little more when the car drives off and you can't identify it

Maybe, but that is a relatively rare event. Much more often, the other driver apologises at the time, but then denies everything later, and says you hit him. Liars are far more common than hit-and-runs. Except in carparks, when you are not there.

        • The thing is though, if you have enough money to own a car a $100 once of dashcam is a pretty cheap investment.

  • Only get these if you are happy with blurry video. For $15 you can't expect much
Here is one I bought for $140… granted it's alot more expensive but invest in what you see fit
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztxs4FwG_lQ

    • Based on that video I wouldn't be recommending your $140 option. Way too dark for daytime making it very difficult to identify pedestrians and/or number plates.

      • +1

Easily adjustable with EV adjustment setting. This was pure stock

        EV and WDR function included.

        What is EV?
EV stands for Exposure Value. It enables the driver to adjust the amount of light into the lens so that the image looks brighter. On the device, it runs on a scale of -2 to +2, zero being normal. +2 is used in low light conditions.

        What is WDR?
WDR stands for Wide Dynamic Range. It allows an imaging system to correct for the intense back light surrounding a subject and thus enhances the ability to distinguish features and shapes on the subject.

All good points bleugh, I was thinking that the fact that you can't read the number plates isn't actually important; it's not really the purpose of dash-cams. Bit of a shame about the battery-life though. I suppose within a few (maybe even a couple?) years, all new cars will come with them built in. They will probably save society more than the cost of fitting them, by way of negating protracted legal disputes; not to mention the amount of crimes that will be rapidly solved simply because someone drove past, inadvertently catching the crook on camera; i.e. Jill Meagher abduction etc.. Given that line of thought, if they were in a lot of cars, they would presumably even prevent a hell of a lot of crime from happening in the first place (a hell of a deterrent).
That will make a bit of a mockery of all the freako 'civil libertarians' who object to being filmed on the streets by fixed safety cameras. How about being filmed by every single car that drives past you, every day? Bring it on I say.

  • Battery life doesn't matter either, 99% of the time it's ugges into the cigarette lighter socket!

    • I had two of these and true, battery life doesn't matter for taking video. But what happened with mine was the battery wouldn't even hold a charge over night. So the time and date would be reset every day. I changed batteries and it still played up.

  • Can the exposure value (EV) of the camera be adjusted?

  • I'm buying one of these $16 cams :):) because for a few $$ I'll use it as a rear facing camera.

I have had a Blackview DR500-HD in my car for over a year now and its a great dash cam, I have read some good and bad reviews, but mine is fine.

I did have software issues initially but once I got the right software version in English its been great ever since, very clear image.

    Cheers

    pookie

  • Good info here on Dash Cams - http://dashcamtalk.com/

  • the same things about 23$ AUD on ebay from aussie seller. I'd rather get it within a week then a month+

  • The LEDs on these things do nothing at all… just to suck in the ones attracted to flashing lights.
These cameras run from your cigarette lighter and the battery in them is just for when they run for a few minutes after you shut down the car and for a few minutes of viewing if needed.

  • better have this than having no cams at all

    • I wouldn't waste your money, they wont be able to give these away in 6 months.

  • +1
  • doubt it's a genuine DVR-027 at that price.

    • the genuine has a HDMI out..apparently thats how you tell.

  • Blu-tack + car phone charger + your existing smartphone = high quality dashcam.
Check your App Store for dashcam apps.
    You're welcome!

    • +4

I suggest people only do this occasionally or use an old phone that is no longer needed.
The constant heat from sun & constant heavy current draw from battery will really reduce the life of the battery in the phone - you have the worse combination of heat (sun), heat (heavy current draw - screen high brightness, GPS, recording + recharging at the same time). Constant heat is a real killer of LiPo batteries.

      • Deconstructed cheap Android phone then? e.g. extract camera, insert extension wires between camera and phone, stick camera to dash, phone somewhere visible to driver, Bob's your uncle.

      • true, in addition the night video is basically useless

        • Especially since the advent of headlights :-P

  • Have this camera… pretty useless, really should throw it out actually.

  • So… still no "night video" from this "night vision cam" kind Mr Rep Sir?

    • It works about 1-2 metres in front of the car, that's about it
