  • MAX.500 GB Formatted Capacity Per Disk

    Huh?

  • hmm maybe it means you HAVE TO create 3 (atleast) drives - each around 500GB

    • Nothing in the hardware would limit that. It's a software issue, which would vary from platform to platform. WinXP without SP1/2/3, for example, would only be able to make 132GB partitions without a third party partition tool.

But I've never heard of a 500GB limit.

EDIT There's also a potential BIOS issue with incredibly old computers that don't support LBA. But again, it's down at 32GB, not 500GB.

      • +1

        Think "platter", not "disk drive"

  • +2

It refers to the fact that it runs the maximum capacity currently availabe of 500Mb per platter.
Note this is 5400rpm drive so may be a little slower than its competition, but to counter that it uses less pwer, less heat and less noise.

    • +1

Yep theguru1 has explained it well.
The drive can hold 500GB per platter … "Mb" might make the HDD slightly larger in size ;)

Typically the bigger HDD's (1TB+) are all coming out as 5400rpm because they use less power, and produce less heat and noise. If you want a faster "boot" drive, then you should be looking at getting one of these for your data (music/movies), and another 10,000rpm drive for your OS, game/app installs, etc.

The only negative to this deal is that there is no combined shipping, only a shipping discount (if you are able to order more than one via post). For example, 2 x HDD's are $22.50 post, 3 x HDD's are $30. Surely the drives don't add enough additional weight or take up that much space to warrant the additional costs.

      • You're failing to take into account that it's a ShippingSquare "bargain"… Their motto is something like "our price looks cheap but we'll screw you on freight"

    • +1

      Make that 500GB per platter.

  • I wonder how long it will be before the new WD 1TB notebook drives are availabilities here

Nice work ShoppingSquare. This is cheaper than StaticIce right now even after the $9.99 shipping. Nice to see realistic shipping prices for a change!

  • Anyone know / where to get a good cheap 1.5tb 7200rpm hdd?

  • +4

I put 4 of these drives and a Harmoney One in my shopping cart and the shipping estimate came to$45.00 to Canberra? That's insane, no thanks.

  • ShoppingSquare has recieved less than stellar reviews from sort prominent Australian forums.

Lets hope these drives haven't been dropped from a great height.

    Good price tho!

  • has anyone had experience with Sumsung HDDs? Who is their OEM?
