My email says I have to make 18 transactions

    • +2

      mine says 18 too!

have used it numerous times in the last couple months. one large transaction, and many small paypal ones (banggood/gearbest/Steam).

      • +1

        me three

        • +6

Me four. Too much to spend just to get the $20 - for me.

        • +1

          Same :(

        • Yep same. I use this card for all my overseas purchases, most recently had fun in the steam sale.

    • Mine is 18 too. I hardly ever use my 28 degrees card, so it's not targeted to get me doing a few more transactions than usual… Weird!

    • My email says 18 too…
it says "As a valued 28 Degrees MasterCard customer"…

I really don't see how much they value me when others only need 6 transactions.

    • Yes, mine also says I'd have to make 18 transactions. Why am I a 2nd class cardholder? I'd rather make 18 transactions with my ING debit card and get 5% cash back on each one! Similar money back, but rewarding good behaviour at ING vs questionable practices at 28 degrees.

      • you'd rather 5% cash back than 11.1% cash back (assuming $10.01 transactions)…?

        fair enough…

        • Your maths are correct assuming that I can do 18 x $10.01 transactions this month. I am not confident of either doing 18 transactions with that card during this month, nor that to achieve that that I would get anywhere near $10.01 per transaction. If my transactions averaged $22.50 or more each (likely), then I would achieve a higher return from using the ING card, and do so easily and without angst.

If 28 degrees had only burdened me with 6 or 12 transactions to make, then, yes, I would have done so. Unfortunately, 18 is setting the bar too high.

        • Well if your transactions average $22.50, then you're not trying hard enough. I'm doing 18x $11 myki top ups, which translates to 10.1%…so not only does my maths work out, but my intelligence too…

          but hey, your loss!

    • I rang 28 Degrees MC about 10 minutes ago and they deny that these offers exist! I have been a customer of theirs for a very long time and I use my card regularly, so I'm really not impressed that they are seemingly being evasive about the existence of this deal………

      • I called back and finally got my $20 offer…….. persistence pays.

        • +1

did you get it with 6, or 12, or 18 minimum transactions?

        • @ssmith3104: Better still I got a "$20 Goodwill credit" straight into my account, no conditions attached!

  • +1

    mine says 6 too

  • +1

6 x $10 Wish gift cards or Coles Myer Cards here we come

    • it says over $10… will it accept exact $10 spend?

      • +26

        6 x $10.01 here we come :)

      • +2

guess that means 6 separate transactions at the checkout though? might piss a few checkout chicks along the way…

        • +13

not as much as the guys having to do 18 transactions :)

        • +1

          Self-check out at 10pm WIN

      • Yes.
I have called to ask them and they said exact $10 transaction is accepted.

  • My hubby received this email about 10 mins ago :)

  • Interested if the OP (and the rest of you) can tell us how much he has used his 28 degrees card (and what you are being offered). For me, I've only used this card once in the last 3 months for an international order which was over $500. Saved quite a bit on foreign transaction fees

    • +1

I got the 6 transactions over $10, I haven't used my card since I signed up 3-4 months ago.

    • +2

I got 18 transactions over $10, which is way too much considering I barely use this card. Maybe once or twice a month, I only ever use it on foreign currency transactions or when traveling.

    • +1

-One accidental purchase a week ago for $70 (wrong card).
-One international purchase 3 months ago
-Last year I loaded it into a surplus and used it to withdraw cash overseas. Did that a lot. Guess they didn't like that and changed the policy.

    • I received my offer - make six transactions of $10 or more in July.

  • +1

Okay this is odd. I was told 12 transactions. Perhaps it depends on how active you've been with the card?

    • i barely use this card.. i last used it in april.. and still need to do only 6.. maybe the more active you are the more transactions you need to do.

      • I spent $242 in the past 3 months on my card.

        • my april statement was $26. that was the last one.

      • seems obvious to me that if your trying to encourage more use you don't set the bar below the users current usage.

      • i spend about $1000 every quarter

        16 transactions =(

    • +1

Mine says 12 transactions as well. I reckon you may be right. Depends on how often you use your card

    • same for me……

  • I have yet to get an email…..I never seem to get 28Deg emails…must be my preferences

  • +2

I only just got my card (no tx) and my deal is "Simply spend $100 or more on 3 separate occasions by 31 July 2014 and receive a $20". I initially thought it was just to get me starting to use the card, however it looks like they are trying to increase people's usage by pushing up the number of times used in a month?
Wonder what the algorithm is, mine should be a great starting point. Coles tries to put the specific flybuys deals about $20 more than your average spend to try to boost your shopping.

I just re-read the email - they give it away here "make sure you pop your 28 Degrees MasterCard in the front of your wallet"

To me this all smells of the US "quantitive easing" (money printing). GE is probably trying to use all that free money at 0% interest while charging customers 19%.

  • +8

I haven't received any emails, only a postal paper letter saying my 28 Degrees card will become Platinum from 22 July, lol.

    • Yep, same here. I've had the card for about 2 months.

    • What is platinum? You get increased credit limit or something?

      • +5

Defining it as "platinum" allows them to charge a higher merchant fee. Unlike most platinum cards, 28 degrees doesn't provide free travel insurance or extra warranty - just the concierge. So it's not really a "platinum" card as far as the customer is concerned.

      • No, almost nothing changed.

They added only the free "PLUS - 24/7 Worldwide Concierge Service" (for booking overseas tours, hotels, restaurants…). Their platinum is so cheap :D

        • +2

Does anyone here value such a service?

        • +2

they are good for securing hard to come by restaurant reservations (the ones that require phone bookings at a particular time on a particular day, x days in advance).

i used the visa concierge to book a few restaurants in New York for me (eg. Per Se). save me having to waste my time/money calling overseas myself!

unfortunately it doesn't work well for Japan…high-end Japanese restaurants tend to require a japanese person make the booking (often requiring that person to be one of the diners for the booking!), or require your hotel concierge to make the booking (a bit strange that they accept hotel concierge bookings, but not credit card concierge bookings!).

        • They can drop the BS in favour of FREE Insurance. It's a Travellers Card after all.

        • i'm guessing free insurance would cost a lot more than access to a call centre in the Philippines (or wherever their concierge service is). particularly if it's just outsourced to an existing concierge service.

    • Also haven`t received this email. :( I use the card frequently, but for small purchases, mostly groceries and restaurants.

  • +3

Looks like a targeted offer as different people get different number of transaction threshold? And I haven't received anything yet — maybe haven't spent enough on my 28degrees card.

    • I have yet to use my card so you will get an offer, interesting if its the same as mine (2 posts up)

    • +2

havne't received the email here. damn them i spend so much on it too.

Maybe they are targeting people who don't spend as much….

      • Well. Definitely not me. I mostly use it to pay for my AWS usage (usually under $2) and occasional cheap Steam Games (something like $2-$5 a pop).

      • +1

I didn't receive the email either. I wouldn't say I spend much through it (only FX transactions and work reimbursements), maybe $50-75/month on average. Only got a letter regarding an upgrade to a Platinum 28 Degrees Card, but that looked worthless.

      • Update: Just checked my mail and I got the free upgrade to Platium with useless concierge service.

        • Glad I'm not the only one who thought that offer useless. I'd like my 10 minutes back that it took to read through it.

BTW, I got the Concierge offer AND the 12 purchases = $20 offer. Have used the card once since getting it.

  • +1

No email for me.. guess I don't need any encouragement to use my card.. bas$&$ds!

  • havent received an email, maybe i've been buying too many things with it lately :(

  • +3

I have used my card a couple of times this month on overseas purchases, looks like I don't need any kind of nudge along as the 28 degrees email I received was just an advert for their paypass system. This type of targeted advertising comes undone when customers get together and swap stories, I feel ripped off that I didn't get any kind of offer and I would also feel ripped if I was given a worse offer than others. Might be time to out the 28 degrees card away for a while and start using my Citibank Card to see if I can get something the next time they do this.

    • +2

I've got the same feeling. I tend to use 28 degree as my primary card and now it is time to switch.

  • These promos are designed to establish a sense of familiarity with your card and pin number. So I'd say the less you use it the bigger the carrot.

  • is PayPal included?

Does anyone notice the spelling mistake in the email?

    • Well spotted. I hadn't noticed.

      • I was struggling to notice even when you bolded it

  • I got 12 x > $10

It's a way to get people to use it esp in Aus to get some more income for them. Fair enough as I want to make sure that it stays around for overseas.

  • +1

Haven't used my card since applied for Citi so got the 6 transactions required.

  • 18 here.

I only use my 28 Degrees maybe once or twice per month, when I make an international purchase online.

  • 18 here :(

  • I wonder if this will work for supplementary cards as well?

    • I called and confirmed that usually any 28 degrees offers on the account should be eligible for supplementary cards too. But the customer service person didn't give me much confidence as she said that there were no 28 degrees offers currently! I told her it was emailed today and promotion for this month only, and that it was sent from email [email protected]

She commented in that case it SHOULD be genuine…! Could someone else pls call to confirm?

  • 6 here, haven't used the card yet.

    • Interesting, same situation as me yet different offer ($10 vs $100). Maybe you have a 5 figure or 6 figure income?

      • I told them $40k on the application because I suspected that's the demographic that pays lots of interest and have greatest chance of the application not being rejected.

  • Am I the only one who got 3 x >$100??

    • I got the same offer as you, except mine is $100 or more (ie >=$100), yours probably is too?

  • I got 12 as well!

  • Mine is also spend 6 x $10 by 31/07/2014.

  • -3

18 transactions over $10 for $20 is around 1% … how tempting is that… not!

  • +6

Just thought I would comment on this post because of my Avatar.
With all the free advertising I give you GE, and I got nothing!

  • +1

Just got back from Singapore where I used my 28 degrees card quite a bit. The email I got from them this morning had no offers at all - just telling me that the card isn't good just for overseas purchases but ideal for shopping online as well.

Seems like quite the targeted campaign.

I used to pay with Paypal/28D card for overseas purchases but since Paypal forced their exchange rates recently I've felt ripped-off and almost stopped buying overseas. Interested only in Amazon now so rarely used my 28D recently. Poor GE, blame PP :)

    • +3

since when did paypal force their exchange rates? Last time I ordered (which wasnt too long ago) i still had the option

      • +2

        Me too, just yesterday.

        • I haven't been able to change mine, how do you it? Thanks

        • +1

once you select the card you have the option for the currency

      • Wait…are you saying we can pick an exchange rate while paying through PP? :| How do you do that? I think I have been using PayPal incorrectly for all these years then….definitely need to learn about this. :|

        • +1

Paypal gives me the option to 'Bill me in the currency listed on the seller’s invoice' (or something like that) when you go into funding source.

So for eg. if I buy something from the US, then it will charge me is USD rather than using paypal's horrendous exchange rate.

        • I never knew that. Will check it out for next purchase. I have been paying Paypal premium exchange rates all these years…even for big purchases. :\
