Average $23 for one piece of in-game DLC? Dang, you aviator fans are nuts

It's a niche market. Some boxed aircraft addons go for 2-3x the price of the original simulator platform! :)

Good prices on the Orbx FTX stuff!

  • How does someone get started with flight sims? Do most people already have a pilot license?

When I was a kid I thought this kind of stuff was amazing with people playing Flight Sim X on their beastly Pentium 4s.

Now I've got the money but no idea how to get into it.

      Hi esq.

No, most people don't have a pilots license. Most can't afford that. Using flight simulators helps them experience the world of aviation for much less cost.

Basically all you need is a fairly decent gaming PC or notebook, and one of the base flight simulator products like Microsoft Flight Simulator X (the most widely used) or another like X-Plane or P3D. A joystick is required as minimum, or you can buy yoke and rudder pedal controls too (and then it can get as elaborate as you like after that).

Once you have the base flight simulator software, you can add to it with any number of the thousands of add-on aircraft, scenery or utilities etc that are available for your platform. Again, Microsoft FSX has the largest number of add-ons available for it, but you can just start with the FSX base software first, which gives you a number of aircraft and basic worldwide scenery to fly around in. After that, if you want much better aircraft or more realistic scenery, you buy the third-party developed add-ons to suit your needs. Of course there are tens of thousands of freeware add-ons out there too. The payware add-ons generally are much better quality, but you can snag some excellent freeware stuff too.

      Hope that helps!

If you have more questions or need more help, give me a call later this week (office closed today for stocktake)and I can answer any other questions you may have.

Stock Flightsim (FSX or P3D) is pretty boring, but once you start looking at 3rd-party addons it can become pretty amazing. Take a look at some flightsim forums such as avsim or orbx and you'll see what sort of stuff people are up to. Flightsim nuts have never had it better.

Agreed. It's the third party add-ons that really transform the sim from a littler bland to something special.

  • REX 4 - Texture Direct HD is great going by what people have said

    • Yes, excellent texture replacement package and a great deal at half price (still fairly recent release). You need to couple it with a good weather generation add-on however to get the maximum effect. A lot of users are running it alongside ActiveSky NEXT (using the features of ActiveSky NEXT to generate the realistic weather, with the REX 4 textures used to display it in "HD".
